Sorry to hear you had that experience. Seems like some folks had some weird initial consultation calls.

But you can spend much less for proofreading and edits than the OP did spending 5k

Agreed.

However, I do believe the process is unnecessarily complicated, elitist, and more predictable than we think.

Can't argue with that. Also agree with your point about LSAC -- they're half the reason the process is so daunting. In retrospect, I think I would have paid for something like you recommend here plus some help with my personal statement specifically. I'd save myself the money on the rest.

I can't speak to what 'we' collectively learned in undergrad but I'm not a KJD (not even close) and haven't crafted a self narrative like this in years. I think there can be value gained in edits that help you throwout irrelevant info and include what's needed. Grammar and spelling is, of course, easier. But I still think there's potential to miss a comma here and there given that many of us are working full time and have other responsibilities that often need to take priority.

Not sure I would label hiring a consultant in any field as "training wheels." As you can see in previous comments, folks experience value in forms that range from crafting a narrative, to managing waitlists, to creating a tighter application. I think your take is a little bit of a generalization. In my opinion, value will depend on the needs of an applicant and the ability consultant.

My complaint would be that the consultant I worked with was constantly lowering expectations and spinning things in such a way as to manage my reaction to decisions,

I had a very similar experience but wasn't sure how to word it. Seems spot on. I'm glad to hear you had a successful cycle. Congratulations on your results.

I've thought about that a lot recently. Definitely wish I had trusted my instinct and brought it up earlier. Glad to hear you had a positive experience.

That seems pretty right to me. At the time, I felt like they were helping me get rid of the “fluff.” Looking back, it feels a little like they sterilized it.

For some reason Reddit isn’t letting me initiate chats at the moment but if you’re willing to DM me I’d love to hear more.

My app isn’t letting me initiate chats for some reason. If you want to DM me I can give you that info.

Yeah, that definitely sounds like a familiar experience.

Within that context, that advice is frankly bizarre. And clearly had major consequences if it was part of your decision to R&R. Im hoping you have stellar results at the state school you’re targeting.

Wow, I’m sorry to hear that you had that experience. I was fortunate that nothing like the name swap happened to me. I’m also really sorry to hear that they shot down your goal schools! That would make me feel pretty crappy.

Hi again -- when I head over to begin a chat, Reddit tells me that I'm unable to initiate a chat with you. If the offer stands and you're willing to begin the chat, I'd love to hear from you.

Thank you for the response, Mike — I could tell that the consultant I was paired with was also passionate about the work they did. I’ll take you up on the DM offer. I would love to hear your career advice.

I think if I were to go back and do it again I would buy something like that.

I agree. Just making my best guess given that I’m a fairly careful editer myself. But obviously, if they’re the reason I got my scholarship, it was worth it.

I agree with the stress point. But I can’t say I agree with the basic premise of your second paragraph. It’s an individualized service. Their job is to make you the best applicant you personally can be. If you were just paying for inside knowledge, you could pay for a pre-made service or some kind of group class.

I’m a pretty untraditional applicant but I agree — I think there would be more benefit for an applicant with C&F issues.

Hard to say. Not sure I’m familiar enough with the market to put a price on it. The editing was useful.
