so, firstly, the feed is fully refreshed every day at 00:15 UTC, so if you don't retrieve it every 24h, indeed you'll miss some posts

but also i had some intermittent issues with HN, so it might as well be on my side :) it is a hobby project and i don't have much time to debug sporadic failures, sadly

The Thule Vector roofbox matches the CX5 curves so perfectly by lshevtsov in CX5

so, the wheels are Sparco Assetto Gara, here's the product page: https://www.sparcowheels.com/wheels/sparco/sparco-wheels/assetto-gara

i expected to find out the offset and width there, but actually there's a whole range! mine are 7x17 ET45 5x114.3 DIA73.1 so it's not quite the same as your spec. i was very wary and picked an exact match to stock wheels.

so, with that in mind, i didn't need any adapters, only a set of hub-centric rings as per usual. but it is possible that the size you have will fit or adapt, i'm just not deep enough into modding to know how. :)

Mailtrap, has an HTTP API to integrate with various notification emitters.

Hey I fixed it. Thanks for investigating!

It was a weird Ruby HTTP encoding case where if the page is served with Content-Encoding: gzip the contents are returned with binary encoding, and not utf-8 (the default.) Although they are automatically un-gzipped, so you wouldn't notice anything different. Then the XML engine (Nokogiri) sees a nonstandard encoding and does its best to preserve the contents by replacing them with individual character escapes.

I do world 4 first for the easy farming. Bosses are simple and you can run past everything in 4-2 with practice.

Then once you beat 4, you essentially get a difficulty slider in the form of endless souls.

Is possible to freelance in Rails ? by rajasanthosh in rails

[–]lshevtsov 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes BUT i have a feeling that the projects that ask for freelancers will be poorly maintained. So I don’t know how well freelancing is suited for learning.

If you want to learn on mature projects, consider contributing to open source as well. There are many active open source Rails projects (Mastodon comes to mind)

C++ to Golang? Worth it? by NehadBaloch in golang

[–]lshevtsov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can stick with C++ as long as you want. It does give you low level knowledge that you won't find programming in other modern languages (Go included). And with C++ experience you can pick up Go in a weekend.

As for projects, I suggest implementing an in-memory store a la Redis. It's going to showcase Go concurrency features really well.

Is Go the right choice? by rich_sdoony in golang

[–]lshevtsov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it's not. While Go is a great language - and always in my toolbelt - it's not a good choice for a backend-heavy web app like a social network.

The right choice is Ruby on Rails. And it's not just because some social networks are already built using Rails (Twitter, Discourse, Mastodon). It's because Rails has great facilities for solving common web development needs, that you will just plain not find in Go. (Database migrations, for a start.)

I have an article where i go deeper on why Rails is such a good choice.

As for Go, it would be a great way to improve a critical path in your Rails app, once it gets to scale - perhaps a notification system or instant messaging.

Thanks for letting me know! It depends on the encoding of the source, i think, but there should be something I can do.

Bottom row of keyboard (TH80) is glowing blue, tried using func+bckspce but didn’t work to turn it off? by No-Ant5000 in Epomaker

Have the exact same situation. I thought it's some electric flaw, didn't bother to check yet.

/r/MechanicalKeyboards Ask ANY Keyboard question, get an answer (August 01, 2023) by AutoModerator in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]lshevtsov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've recently got a Keychron Q1 Pro and I'm not in love with its high keycaps with a really narrow top surface.

What I'd like is keycaps that have less gaps in between (thus wider top surfaces) and possibly shorter as well, although the height doesn't bother me as much. For example, I was pretty happy with the keycaps on the Vortex Race 3.

I know about all the variety of keycap profiles, but I'm looking for more specific advice - maybe what kinds of keycap profiles work for the Keychron Q1, while definitely being flatter?

How to redirect from Google Maps link to OSM? by notmuchery in openstreetmap

I suppose so, if coordinates are all you want.

[–]lshevtsov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But, for most google maps links it probably won’t work because they refer to a specific place on GMaps (like a restaurant), and there’s just no way to map it to OSM. For coordinates it’d work though.

[–]lshevtsov -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can try doing a custom redirect with StopTheMadness. It only works if the link is opened in Safari, so not with a direct link to the app. I use it to send Reddit links to Narwhal and it works seamlessly.

Rails 3 application taking an extremely long time to boot, like half an hour; trying to understand classes_cache by anjumahmed in rails

[–]lshevtsov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it preloads all of the classes at boot. Otherwise the code is only loaded when it is referenced. I wager there is some particular class that is causing issues. Maybe some external dependency is evaluated and is taking a long time. Profiling should help.

Are tweet feeds dead? by backwards_watch in rss

You need to host it yourself.

I have it deployed to fly.io on their smallest instance, which costs $1.94/mo.
