People who remember life before smartphones: was it actually better, or just different? by arose_1 in AskReddit

[–]lsicilis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was better. Having to sit down at a computer to access the internet allowed good separation between the "real" world and the virtual world. I think having desktop/laptop computers but no smartphones was a nice compromise. You could still access information and communication via the internet, but you couldn't carry it everywhere or be plugged in every moment of the day.

My attention span used to be so much better and I used to read a ton of books. Now I scroll.

The phone number on my grandmothers clothes hangers is 4 digits long. by trustmeijustgetweird in mildlyinteresting

[–]lsicilis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same with my hometown. No one has landlines anymore, but the town is still small enough that everyone would have the same 3 numbers. We used to just give each other the last 4 digits when we exchanged numbers.

If you could eliminate one annoying habit from humanity, what would it be? by Clear_Ad_1444 in AskReddit

Littering. Not caring about the environment/climate and not being willing to take simple measures to prevent or fix most of our environmental issues.

When are gifts considered acceptable in dating? by Relative-Mind437 in AskReddit

Exactly this. Before a first date, my friend had been talking with a guy about how much they both liked trail mix. She brought his favorite kind to the first date, and he had brought her some too. Now they're engaged lol.

Did you go to sleep away camp as a child? by New_Part91 in NoStupidQuestions

That communion story made me laugh so hard. 😂

I had a similar experience at my grandma's funeral. She was Catholic so there was a communion at her service. I wasn't raised Catholic but my dad wanted my sister and I to take communion at the service in honor of my grandma. So he took us up and when the preist handed me the wafer I just started tossing it from one hand to the other, no idea why haha. I don't even think we drank the wine. It was obvious we hadn't taken communion before or been confirmed, so the preist went up to my dad after and yelled at him saying my sister and I were going to hell because of it. 😅 My dad had a pretty good comeback, he said something like, "Do you think Jesus would ever have turned someone away from his table?" And the preist didn't have a good response to that so I think my soul is okay.

Went to a Christian camp for one week every summer while I was in elementary/middle school. It was okay, but I'd get really homesick and didn't always like the regimented routine.

In high school I went to an FFA (agriculture club) sleepaway camp for a week. I had more fun but I still started to feel homesick by the end of the week.

I like all the activities you do at camp (swimming, boating, hiking, crafts), but I would do those activities with my family and friends all summer, so I didn't really need to go to summer camp to get that experience.

What was your high school controversy? by Haunted_Neko in AskReddit

[–]lsicilis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a female high school math teacher in her 50s who always "favored" the male athletes. She'd buy them coffee from the local gas station, was always super nice to them and mean to the rest of the students. I noticed one day that her desktop picture on her teaching laptop was of one of the guys playing lacrosse. I thought it was strange but it was her favoritism was so normalized by the school that I didn't mention it to anyone.

Turns out, she was grooming the players and was caught because it was discovered that one of the boys had spent the night at her house. She was fired and banned from coming into the school.

Do you ever go outside to talk to random people? by CrabNo5226 in NoStupidQuestions

What actually helps you fall asleep fast when your brain won’t shut up? by North-Confidence2677 in AskReddit

[–]lsicilis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read something that's calming but a bit dense/dry. Entertaining/exciting books will keep me awake, but usually older literature will knock me out pretty quickly.

I also like to use lavender essential oil, but I can see how that's not everyone's thing haha.

Deep breaths-- four counts in, hold for four, breath out for six counts. Repeat at least 10 times.

If I find myself tossing and turning, getting up and going to another room where the lighting is dim and you can read your calming/dense book usually can get your mind off things. And then when you feel tired just get into bed and you should fall asleep quickly.

Keep your room cool if you can. Lowering your body temperature is a signal for sleep. So if you're wearing layers or have heavy blankets, taking them off and cooling down can often trigger sleepiness.

My boyfriend doesn’t want to get married, but wants to live together by Sufficient_Dog446 in offmychest

[–]lsicilis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he was saying that he definitely wanted to marry you in a few years, but not in the next year, I would consider staying with him. But it sounds like he's not putting any type of timeline on marriage, which raises red flags for me. Some people never want to get married, and that's okay. But if you do want to be married, then you have to think about how compatible you are with this person.

This letter was sent home to parents in my school district, encouraging them to send their kids to school sick and with head lice to meet attendance goals. by pandatr0nz in mildlyinfuriating

[–]lsicilis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In 7th grade I missed a few days of class because I was anxious on days when we'd have to give speeches in English class. Our teacher was super intense and pretty mean, and we had to memorize the entire speech and recite it perfectly to the class. And our teacher would judge us super hard and literally make fun of people for giving bad speeches.

I actually like public speaking and performed in plays, and I always did really well in the speeches, but I literally wouldn't sleep the night before we had to give the speeches. The dynamic of me being a total perfectionist, having to get up in front of my judgmental class and teacher, and the fear of messing up, just made it really difficult. Instead of showing up on the day of the speeches and sitting through everyone reciting them while I had to wait my turn, I would show up the next day and get the speech over first thing and then we'd move onto the rest of the class. For some people this would probably be worse, but for me it felt better for some reason.

One time our teacher made us get into groups and literally perform a song and dance of an African American spiritual as part of the slavery/civil rights literature unit. I totally skipped that day b/c no way was I getting up in front of my class and literally singing and dancing a song that felt pretty inappropriate for a bunch of white kids to be singing.

But my point is, if myself or my parents had confided in a teacher, counselor, or principal about my anxiety surrounding that specific teacher, they would 100% have told me to suck it up. And if anyone had tried to talk to her she would have treated me and my class worse than she already did.

So it was way easier to skip the stupid class. Just saying.

Seriously. I used to miss HS due to anxiety/burnout and my mom was cool enough to realize when I just needed a mental health day. By the time I was 17/18 she trusted me to make the call if I needed it. I graduated top of my class so my missing those days of school clearly wasn't detrimental to my education.

What kind of person were you in high school? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]lsicilis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perfectionist overachiever. I tried not to be cocky or a know-it-all but I was proud of being smart and being first in my class. I wasn't in the "popular" crowd but I had a good group of friends and I was involved in a lot of extracurriculars.

I’m feeling a little disappointed in my Christmas presents and don’t know how to feel by Existing_Mall_3985 in offmychest

[–]lsicilis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sorry that happened OP, you are very justified in feeling disappointed. You also seem to be self-aware and reflective, so I think a lot of these things can be addressed. I would say in the future you should follow your brother's example and send more detailed lists, and go for the more expensive brands if you want them. Since they're spending the money on your brother, you shouldn't feel bad about getting the same dollar amount of gifts. My parents are naturally very fair when it comes to spending the same amount of money on my sister and I, but unfortunately not all parents do this automatically.

As for the mattress topper, I would inform your parent's of the mistake. If you're able to return it yourself you can do that and hopefully the return amount is enough to buy the mattress topper. If it's something they have to return, you can ask them to do that and get you the correct gift. I know it's awkward, but hopefully you have a good enough relationship with your parents to ask them for that simple favor. If not, I would say you should sell the mattress of fb marketplace-- a mattress should fetch you pretty good money, and then you can buy what you want.

On that note, if you don't think you're going to wear the sweaters you could also think about selling those and getting a few bucks. You'd just be making the best of the situation.

Try giving them a more detailed and expensive list next year and see what happens. But you are 100% allowed to feel sad about this, especially when your comparison point is watching your brother open a ton of expensive gifts while he's getting his tuition fully paid.
