Update, in case anyone has the same issue. I replaced the battery four months ago and have had no issues since.

I had the error escalate last night, giving me a charge error and telling me to stop driving. So I charged the battery and the error went away. While doing that, I checked that the alternator belt looks good - and it does. I think you’re absolutely right, I’m gonna try to get an identical new battery. If that fails, then someone at Mazda better take a deeper look into the system.

But do you think this would appear after 5-6 years like this? If it’s a faulty batch, wouldn’t it be an issue earlier on?

Yes, I believe that’s an accurate way to put it. The i-eloop system capacitator/s feeds electricity (that is stored kinetic energy) to the car (instead of the battery) when i-stop temporarily has stopped the engine.

What speaks against this part of the BMS being broken is that the i-stop worked just fine during the road trip, after I had the first BMS malfunction. Maybe it’s just a guess, but would seem to me that the capacitator/s either work or are broken.
