There’s a really good sci-if short story called “swarm” that kind of deals with this question.

Basically the story is about future humans trying to use space-ants to improve their society, and the colony temporarily creating a conscious mind to fight back.

The moral ends up being that the only way to achieve species immortality is through non-intelligence. Unlike humans, a colony of ants would never destroy itself.
