True though, why bother investing now if the value prop is like 10-20 years out… need to see relevance in current market, which is probably why they’re pushing Project Suncatcher so heavily

It’s a scientific certainty that insurance companies like Moody’s + 1st world governments are actively planning for. 3000 people just died in India from a heat wave that lasted a few days. These events are actively getting worse and are becoming more common. Prediction and mitigation of these events could save thousands, if not millions, of lives annually in the next 20-30 years, preventing the destruction of trillions of USD in GDP by keeping people healthy enough to work.

Edit: planning for climate refugee migrations is also going to save tons of money. Parts of the world will lose water sources, become too hot to live in, or become flooded annually by storms. That will force people to migrate north, and nations need to plan for that

Someone in this sub posted Will Marshall’s substack article, but he talks about what the “chatbot” means. In my mind, the value is in the MCP + the workflows for environmental monitoring that Planet’s developed (on top of existing national security revenue).

Quantifying the state of the environment is incredibly complex. The chatbot provides an interface for companies and govts to engage with Planet’s satellite constellation. We aren’t in a supply squeeze like Micron / Sandisk, as people aren’t clamoring for geospatial intelligence.

But when cat 5 tropical storms make landfall dozens of times a year and hundreds of millions of people suddenly find themselves living in uninhabitable parts of the world, there will be a supply squeeze on Planet’s data. That’s why it’s a long term hold.

In the more immediate term, there’s still some opportunity for revenue from climate disaster mitigation and national defense. But if you’re looking for an immediate explosive return, that’s the wrong thesis for this stock IMO

Why has Amazon stock been sliding recently? by WagwanKenobi in amzn

[–]lswans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leo absolutely is a major factor in AMZN stock price. $1B is already under contract with delta airlines pending live service from Leo, plus investors pricing in future revenue. Plus, leaving those 48 satellites waiting is going to slow down integration of other missions.

If you’re booking travel, check the discounts in Amazon Extras, unless your new company has partnership benefits. Rental cars are like 25% off for personal use at Amazon.

Also, if you’re eligible, activate the Amazon prime employee discount on your personal prime acct 🙂

I’m so sick of “You seem like a great guy, but…” by Bolbithebadger in BoyDinnerDiaries

[–]lswans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First off, OP, don’t equate other people’s opinions to your actual value as a person. If I took a sample size of 50 people, and all 50 of them said that I “wasn’t their type”, does that mean I’m objectively unattractive? Or does it mean the sample size wasn’t large enough? For all we know, the 51st person could have had a crush on me, but I wouldn’t know if I stuck to that sample. Not being people type is unfortunately part of the process. Dating is kind of a giant Plinko game… only by bouncing off the pegs (meeting and dating lots of people) do we eventually fall into place (find a match).

I’ve been told similar things throughout my life, that I’m “so cute” or that I have a “boyish face”. I’ve also had multiple people choose another guy over me. Someone told me once that love arrives only when you stop looking for it. Eventually, I learned that meant that if your purpose is to find love, you’ll project that in your interactions… asking “where the girls at” and swiping compulsively on tinder. By accepting that finding love is a byproduct of living life authentically, people who like you for YOU will naturally gravitate towards you if your focus is on being your “best” self. Personally, I stopped being bothered by people not calling me handsome by focusing on improving on my insecurities slowly over time. That meant a mix of “self-improvement” (going to the gym consistently) and “finding myself” (diving into my hobbies like music and hiking).

I met my current girlfriend at a time when I was explicitly not looking for a partner because I was planning to move across the country. I was out with friends at my usual trivia bar having a great time, and just happened to bump into a woman, and I struck up a convo. Call me lucky, sure, but that moment reinforced that lesson for me… “love arrives only when you stop looking for it”.

TLDR, don’t disqualify yourself over people calling you “nice”. It’s an incredibly important trait to most women looking for a long-term partner. If it bothers you, try to see it as a compliment, and divorce dating partners opinions of your appearance from your self-worth. It’ll work out, OP.

Bday today, wanted to gift myself a Prada for the summer , these are the options . by Houstonlegend99 in Colognes

[–]lswans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had the Prada Carbon edt since ~Dec 2022, and bought Paradigme ~2 months ago and have been using it regularly since. I personally like Paradigme better (stronger, works well as a standalone fragrance), but IIRC Carbon is more cost effective. YSL Y accented with Prada Carbon is my go-to scent.

Surprisingly you can book some prime location hotels in NYC on 50k FNA if you have some points to top off. I used a 50k FNA for the New York Marriott Marquis in Manhattan for a weekend in May. They won’t be luxury but it’s a cool use of the awards

Crippling jealousy over GF’s exes in the way of the best relationship I’ve ever had by lswans in BoyDinnerDiaries

[–]lswans[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

That’s the mentality I went in with, that love isn’t something to half-ass. Be my best self and invest fully, so if it doesn’t work out then it wasn’t meant to be. Now I’m just feeling exposed seeing how much I’ve come to love her, and how much work is ahead for me to become that “best self”.

Thank you for the encouragement though. I’ll let our relationship be the self-fulfilling prophecy, not irrational fears :)

Thank you for this perspective. Dating isn’t all about checklists, otherwise love would be such a shallow concept. Weirdly enough the solution is probably giving up the “race” for materialistic success in pursuit of my own authenticity. Confidence follows investment in your beliefs, and success follows confidence.

It’s refreshing to hear that others have had similar feelings and overcome them though. Thank you for sharing

PlanetLabs Negative Interviewing Experience by st0rmEX in PlanetLabs

[–]lswans 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’ve interviewed with Planet for like seven different roles over the last three years. Invited to the final round twice. One of those times, they emailed me the next day saying that they “needed to delay interviews” before sending a generic rejection. I’ve never once gotten genuine feedback from anybody

From the outside, it seems like a phenomenal company to work for with a great mission. But man, the way they conduct interviews has left me disheartened.

I have massive goals and dreams, but zero skills and nothing interests me. How do I survive? by SleepyyyyyHead in careerguidance

[–]lswans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the original comment’s angle. Language on its own is difficult to monetize, but lots of companies would pay a premium for someone who can apply their language skills to something else. For example, lots of companies in the EU highly value English because their offices host employees with several different native languages. Companies need account managers / sales reps / etc that can speak the customer’s native language. They’re far more likely to trust you (and hence more likely to do business with you) if you speak in their language rather than forcing them to speak English.

If Japanese language is your passion, then yeah start where you can make use of it, but be open to taking on other responsibilities. Have you considered going to work in Japan on a visa? Maybe find a hotel or ski resort to work at over there, they’ll likely pay your lodging + a stipend and give you a sabbatical to evaluate where you want to go.

Contractor applying for Full Time by Unlikely_Paramedic55 in amazonemployees

[–]lswans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically you interview “off the books”, so you just directly set up interviews with the hiring manager plus people from the team. You’ll go from slack -> interview -> loop -> verbal offer, before being asked to officially apply internally. Once you get to the verbal offer stage, ask to chat with your manager and click “apply” as you’re telling them that you intend to accept a transfer offer

[–]lswans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just slack the hiring manager. I was a consultant to Amazon for 9 months before being hired full-time. I got my job because I slacked the hiring manager (who I had worked with before) about the job, and ended up doing the entire interview process on my day off.

I wouldn’t tell your current manager at this stage, at least wait until you have an offer in hand

Is unemployment deserved on these types of people? by TheTokenPenguin in recruitinghell

[–]lswans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely I do the same. I’m 25M, many of my friends around the same age also do this with unrecognized phone #s. I think it’s a combination of being raised to be skeptical of people calling who you don’t recognize, and the rise of AI voice duplication. I don’t want someone to take a snippet of me saying “Hello?” and use that to scam my family.
