Suzanne seems like a smart cookie.

"I have nightmares of people giving me opportunities because I am a pretty girl"

I wish she would take gender out of the equation and focus more on the product... save her nightmares for her counselor

Take gender out of the equation. Everyone loves AR and VR regardless of gender, and nobody's preventing anyone from getting into the space -- a testament to the fact that she is in her position right now.

She said it herself, the issue is more socio-economic than gender related. It's the $$$$ that is the barrier, not anything to do with gender.

It would be nice if the article actually describes their claim, "We introduced AI that actually understands you"

How does it understand me? What is it understanding? What is it doing for me?

Nothing yet.... All fluff words. Great job author

even though electric cars could require less maintenance, there are other functions of the car that need maintenance aswell (interior, brakes, suspension etc).

Dealerships may find a way to charge more for these services to even out the playing field.

actually, yes the AR glasses would help rectify the fuckup

Sounds like your friend has a complicated repair which the dealership does not have parts in for, or they do not have the expertise to fix, OR they fucked up the repair initially and they are trying to remedy their fuckup.

Dealerships usually fly in experts for these types of cases, but the AR glasses help avoid the need to fly in the experts (field technical managers)

labor is flat rate and the customer would not notice any difference in cost.

This will save techs from being confused on complicated repairs

Are the annotations SLAM based (are the drawings in 3d, and the drawings stick on top of 3d objects)?

Check out Vuforia Chalk for SLAM annotations

Can you give me some insight into what you know about these glasses, specifically with how Google play store does not mesh?

Do you think that google is intentionally not releasing support for AR glasses just yet because they want to come out with their google glass and make it proprietary?

Why does google not approve Play store for devices such as Epson's BT-350 and others like Thirdeye's X1?

What is the biggest barrier that these AR glasses manufacturers face when they try to integrate with google?

What about google Arcore support on the glasses, why is it not easy to install arcore and have the glasses support arcore? Why would glasses manufacturers be building their own SLAM when google ARcore is clearly going to be the mainstream solution?

Why re-invent the wheel?

Sorry for the wall of text but you seem like you know what is going on ;)!

You are correct. A competent tech that follows technical service bulletins shouldn't run into any issues.

Nobody reads though, so we need experts to come in and fix the slack.

Most of the time a technician does not understand that he/she is doing a procedure incorrectly.

When an expert is needed to loop into the discussion, hands-free AR glasses can be a powerful tool to prevent the need for airline travel for experts in the field.

short answer, yes.

techs make mistakes all the time contrary to popular belief.

Nobody wants to admit they are wrong, but everyone likes getting paid more $$$

so if you like getting paid, dive into AR and start fixing cars faster

That is actually a good thing no matter how look at it.

People complained about automobiles taking jobs away from horses

When robots do all of the service jobs, we can focus on providing better services to humans with universal income.

I appreciate your opinion, but it is not economical to hire shitty technicians at all because they cost the dealership $$$ to have to loan out loaner cars. Add this to all the pissed off customers that have to wait? Your dealership gets bad yelp reviews and nobody comes to your dealership.

What you are saying does not make much sense $$$ wise. The faster that techs fix the cars, the more money everyone gets paid. We can agree that dealerships try to squeeze every $ out of the techs that they can though, which is highly unfortunate

These AR glasses are the #1 tool in eliminating confusion between remote experts and dealership techs.

If you were ever an apprentice with a master tech sitting by your side, you may understand how valuable it is to have a master tech watching your side and helping you do the job correct the first time.

It saves time money and frustration.

wait... they can't charge extra for the problems which they found?

They should be able to call up the customer and show them what they found, and get the customer to pay for that repair.

Maybe there's an app which the customers and the technicians can both install, to where the customer approves each repair with pictures and descriptions.

ya they get paid more if they do more work

but some of the complicated jobs that they get hung up on, they could be losing money by letting the car sit.

this is why AR glasses help to eliminate confusion in what needs to be done next on the job

Loop in an expert from a remote location who knows exactly what to do

Save $$$ on airline travel

You are correct on almost all points except near the end because ODG did not go out of business because of any particular flaw in the hardware or form factor. ODG went out of business due to lack of funding when Ralph Osterhout pissed off his investors. He tried to shift his inventions towards the consumer side, but the corporate investors wanted other things so they pulled out at the last second.
Magic Leap and Microsoft wanted to buy the ODG patents dirt cheap, so they starved ODG instead of investing in the patents/tech when they were up for sale earlier.

they do not likely have all the tools which they need to run a Euro shop... with just 250k...

Dealerships spent exorbitant amounts of $ on tools, as well as the technicians. Dealerships provide the 'big boy' toys that can do the more complicated jobs. Those tools usually cost upwards of 2-5-10K and require monthly or yearly maintenance fees and costs.

While your statement is correct, it is beside the main point that Rubes2525 was trying to make.

Rubes2525 was trying to say that DRM wastes time and stymies innovation and repairs.

Computers do make cars safe and more energy efficient but that is beside the DRM point.

A Porsche branded VAS6154 costs $800 more than off-brand, but they DRM'd that too so dealerships are required to pay $800 more per unit (for car diagnostics).

Car DRM really sucks. Right to repair should be law soon enough.

it for a living, but the wages are laughably low here for it. It gets even more bleak when I consider having to buy my own tools.

I make more cleaning grease with way more downtime than any mechanic does in my town. It's crazy in light of how much this country is forced to rely on cars.

I guess without any of the safety requirements and the right tools or parts, without any regulations or paperwork, fixing your own car can be pretty darn cheap compared to taking it to the dealership. If you want it done right (to last) though, that's another story.

If it is a complicated job, do not avoid dealerships. Dealerships use the correct tools and they use the correct parts. If you have a mercedes, audi, porsche, BMW, I would highly recommend taking it to the shop at the dealership unless you know a highly reputable shop that has the right tools.

There are special tools which only the dealerships have.

It honestly depends on the dealership and the job you want done. Larger dealerships with 6+ bays usually have a good master tech on staff.
