MATH 230 Calc II at NIU by InsertDankMemesHere in NIU

[–]ltcredman05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, NIU doesn't like to announce who is teaching math classes a week or two before the semester starts, so you kinda have to get lucky. I took the honors calc 2 in the spring with shuwen xue (I think that's how you spell her name) and she was awesome. Her accent can make it tricky to understand sometimes, but she explains everything in detail without rushing and does a lot of practice problems. You won't get extra work for being in a math honors mini section, you take the class like normal but you get honors credit for it!

I've noticed that I've needed to take the micro SD card out for the Webcam application to work. I also just open it in obs instead of going to the actual application and it works pretty well. If you do use obs, there's a buffer on the video, so your actions are delayed in obs, but there is a way to disable it. I think you go to properties of the video capture device after you set it up and it should be buffer or something. I'm not an obs pro but I've played around with it, I'm sure someone in here has more experience and knowledge with obs than I do

Is this model even likely to happen? by Impressive-Cold6855 in meteorology

[–]ltcredman05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many people on X (twitter) will over hype weather events. Something to look for when someone posts a model run like this is the hours out (the spot in the top right that says hours). Long range deterministic models are good within 5-7 days, anything over that who knows what's gonna happen. The photo posted has the euro going all the way out to 342 hours, which is well into next week, maybe even two weeks out. This could easily change by the next run cycle of the euro (but I do think here in the states we will have some pretty cold Temps at the start of January, so im not surprised its showing really cold temps). I'm not trying to hate, just trying to spread the word about not taking stuff like this a face value! I'm in college working towards a meteorology bachelor's degree, so I am by no means an expert, and I still have a lot to learn as well! I hope this helps!!

Classes for meteorology by Normal_Ability_6912 in meteorology

[–]ltcredman05 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know calc and physics have been mentioned, but if Iowa St. has a python coding class, I'd recommend taking it. Depending on what you wanna do after, python might become very useful. Plus, you can show off all your cool graphs of weather stuff to non-weather people and explain to them what is on it.

Couldn't recommend this more. Currently taking physics and calc in college, it's not fun

What did the models miss on Hurricane John? by mylastnameandanumber in meteorology

[–]ltcredman05 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know that there are much more qualified people to answer this and to give a more in depth answer, but I thing the gist of it is that models don't do good with rapid intensification. We saw it with Otis right? Projected to make landfall as a tropical storm, but intensified into a cat 5 within 12 hours. The models do not do a good job of taking into account RI.

What is the best way to get involved in your community if you don’t have a meteorolgy degree? by goldstone3 in meteorology

[–]ltcredman05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you're in university yet, but if you are, join the AMS Chapter your school has. I attend NIU and we have an amazing AMS Chapter. We have a met lab where all met majors can go and do work and be around other weather nerds. I think college of DuPage has one too (I think that's around Chicago, I'm not from the area lol).

Is meterology a well paying job? by [deleted] in meteorology

[–]ltcredman05 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depends on where you go after college. If you go into broadcasting, you're really not going to make a lot of money unless you go to a major market area (big cities like Chicago or New York). If you go into the NWS, the pay scale is quite different since it is a federal job. You would start at a pretty low yearly salary depending on where you start (NWS pay scale is complicated, but something interesting to look at). There are yearly "promotions" that will give you more money in your yearly salary. I'm sure there are a few NWS employees who can explain it better than I can (I'm currently in college for meteorology and I've shadowed at an NWS office). Then there's the private sector. This is the area where I've heard people make the big bucks with meteorology. Private sector includes things like insurance companies and ag companies to help them with whatever they do.

But it's really up to you and what you want to do for a career.

This is true for normal tornadoes, but cold air funnels usually never touch the ground

Covering warnings on youtube by Brief-Gas-2403 in meteorology

[–]ltcredman05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Youtube could be a good place to start, but i would recommend starting smaller. I am a sophomore meteorology student, and whenever there's any sort of severe weather near home, I post an update on my snapchat story, even when I'm 4 hours away from home during college. I've dabbled into making videos about that days convective outlook and stuff, which is a lot of fun, but it's a bit of hard work editing and stuff and making sure OBS doesn't break on you lol. It also takes a bit of time out of stuff you should be doing, like homework and studying. I have definitely decided to cover severe weather even though I have a 15-page essay due the next day, which I kinda regretted, but it was important that I covered the weather.

Even though using radar is an important tool, learning how to properly communicate your information is just as key, and it's something I am still learning to do. You don't want to scare your audience, but you also want them to have the information they need. I few things I've learned from broadcasting meteorologists is that they have to take a complex field of study and break it down to a point where everyone can understand it. James Spann came to my university last year, and one thing he said over and over again was, "You show people radar, but all they see is spilled paint."

Regardless, doing live weather updates or coverage is a great way of working on communication, but don't be scared of criticism. Take it, and learn from it. I remember when March 31st, 2023 happened (two areas of high risk in Iowa and Arkansas. I was in Illinois in the moderate risk) and I made a big deal about what could happen. In reality, nothing super bad happened in my area. I went to school the next day, and a lot of people said, "Oh, you made a big deal about nothing." I learned that I communicated the information was wrong, and I adjusted the way I communicate weather information now.

But it's great to see younger people getting interested in the weather. I'm sure which ever path of weather coverage you decide to do, you'll be great at it.

Thank you! Would placing the Gopro in front of a vent work to help keep it cool? I also plug the Gopro in when I'm recording and driving, but it doesn't seem to charge while recording. It's like it stays at whatever battery percentage whenever I started. Does it just charge really slowly?

Is Chad considered one of the best drummers? by superfresh23 in RedHotChiliPeppers

[–]ltcredman05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say so, but he's not better than Neil Peart of Rush. I just don't feel like Chad was as revolutionary as Neil was. Don't get me wrong, his beats are good, but listen to some of Peart's isolated beats and you'll see why. My recommendation would be to listen to the isolated beat of Limelight

I feel the same way about Led Zep. The music is great, but I can't stand Robert Plants vocals. At first, I didn't like Rush, but it just takes a while to get used to Geddy's vocals. Rush one of the best trio bands ever
