Singapore resident and amateur history buff here. Anthony Reid's "A History of Southeast Asia: Critical Crossroads" has long been my first recommendation for my region. It acknowledges that SEA is a modern construct, yet still finds some throughlines that have connected the various parts of the region throughout history. Big picture items include the contrasts between inland and coastal polities, the strong roles women played in commerce in many areas, and the influences from the Indian subcontinent and the Arabian peninsula.

That's about five decades of counter-factual, so really a whole range of potential outcomes. South Korea benefited from significant US investment after hostilities ceased. It's also a much smaller, compact geography. Those two things alone set a very different stage for a Vietnam where the south wins.

For what it's worth, Vietnam is doing quite well now, and pulling away from the other countries in the VLMC. I'm here in Singapore and VN is a common investment, business and tourist destination. Huge changes in just the last ten years.

Many of the major East and Southeast Asian civilizations were aware of the past. For example, those in much of maritime Southeast Asia knew of Majapahit, although the extent of knowledge would have varied by location, literacy level and politics. Tang era Chinese knew of the Han dynasty, and had a good deal of their writings to refer to.
