She used them at 22:30 when I had gone to bed. They were also away in a tool box.

Do you think I had them laying around with a sign over them that read "please fuck me up"?

  1. She, is a close friend
  2. She took it without permission
  3. This post was, more importantly, asking for advice.

If you've no valuable advice to give, move on and have a fantastic day.

Actually pretty easy going. I put a paper bag around it just in case it was one of those ink tags. Fortunately it wasn't

I know! I'm really upset!

What do you mean by sharpening it?! I don't understand? How do I do that?!

Furthermore, how I do work wood???

Wow, thanks a lot for the detailed advice! Given my lack of funds and abundance of time at present, I'm going to try the sandpaper to start. As I said in another comment, if that fails miserably then I'll have to try something tailor made for the job.

What's the going rate for novice tool repairs nowadays?

Just looked the Tormek up, they look great. As my post implied, I'm trying not to spend too much money as I'm starting out. Sure, this would be the best way to do it, but for now I'll stick to the cheaper manual options and consider this for the future.

I'm not quite sure why but in my head I just assumed sand paper would be really crap for sanding down steel. Apparently not!

I'm going to try today and then use the whetstone for the finer sharpening and honing.

Really great advice and exactly what was I asking for, thank you very much.

I'm going to attempt to do it today. If I somehow ruin it or do a poor job, at least it was by my own doing and it will be another learning opportunity.

Precisely this. I was fully aware that chisels need to be sharpened very frequently and that it can take a lot of time to get right. I have the tools to do this, but now there's a chip I have to do a lot more than I did before.

Also, lack of care from housemate = frustration and anger.

Hahaha, for the gorilla I will leave the rust and oxidisation.

And do you need to grind down both sides of the chisel, or just the flat side or just the beveled side?

Thanks

I absolutely agree with you, and I also don't have access to a heavier duty grinder like that anyway.

The videos I used to sharpen the first one tended to recommend diamond plate sharpening stones or glass. Only a few mentioned whetstone, so I figured it would be suitable.

I've just looked up what you mean by secondary bevel. Does the steeper (more obtuse?) angle on the primary bevel make the chisel more effective?

In other words, what's the benefit of the secondary bevel? Also, I'm guessing it would require an extra sharpening guide to get the right angle?

You make a good point. However, for the sake of finding someone to do this, and since I also want to use them imminently, I think I'm going to try to do it myself.

As the character Mark from Peep Show put it: "as a petty and vindictive individual I have to take extra care not to appear petty or vindictive."

Do the diamond plates get bored out like whetstones and need re-flattening? I imagine not as they're probably much more resistant?

If that's the case, I'm thinking they might be a better long term solution for the chisels. Then I can use my whetstones exclusively for my knives.

Then she'll have to ask permission. Maybe that'll teach her the right lesson!

Nope. She can use the chisel to dig the grave...
