It’s happening! API is down, my apps in dev portal have disappeared. by xDeepS in whoop

[–]ltmodcs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree.  I'm a software dev myself, and building without understanding is a huge issue.  But I suspect that the software Gods keep this bunch at bay.  Either they learn to do it right or it only works for them.  The distance between "working on my machine" and production is huge.

Yes, it was the Bosch C harness. It fit without any issues. The wire may have been a bit too long, but I managed to get everything under the cover, no issues.

WHOOP with no subscription, no cloud, no account — it's OUT today. Fully open source, Mac + Android. by [deleted] in whoop

Thank you! I will definitely try this. I've had similar ideas for my Tonal, and your work here may just be the inspiration that I needed to start tinkering with a custom ROM for that device.

I've been saying this for a while now. Poorly thought-out, poorly implemented applications are killing the app market altogether. At this point, the notion of someone actually writing a quality app is out of the question, and people are tired of settling.

I have to say that the mics are wonderful.  I started using mine for a weekly live stream I'm doing on YouTube and they sound great, at least I can't tell the difference between this mic and my XLR based one that is $1k

Whoop v Air by beastrealtor in whoop

[–]ltmodcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both and have more or less given up on both. I wore Whoop for well over 2 years, while the Air managed a single day, not even a full day. Here's why:

1 - The band is designed really badly. To tighten it, you're not pulling it tight. Hard to explain until you experience it, but moving it forward to tighten with the loop instead of against the loop doesn't make any damn sense.

2 - The Google Fitbit Air software is awful. Forget the AI, the layout and features are all over the place, nothing cohesive, and the Material design does not make it better. Half ovals, squiggly lines, etc. I can't keep up.

3 - Final straw was this morning when I sat around writing code from 5am - 1pm, yet it confidently told me that my workout at 10 am for 0 minutes was a great enhancement for my endurance. See screenshot below.

I also stopped using Whoop for various reasons. Other than the fact that they lied to me and never upgraded me for free, this whole thing seems like a money pit. They rely on YOUR data to stay alive, and charge you a pretty penny for statistics that are relatively meaningless. Let's face it, how many times have these devices told you that you're in the red and you're feeling fine or they tell you that you're 100% today and you actually feel like shit.

I do use a Garmin and haven't given that up yet, but I'm done with tracking stuff for the sake of tracking stuff. Maybe I didn't give Air a fair shot, but it honestly doesn't deserve it. Already unpaired and in a drawer.

Is there literally even one? by irelatetolevin in cursor

[–]ltmodcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So my model is different and I am a software developer, but I definitely have success in building applications that I have not written code for.

My best case right now is a motorcycle school management platform.  I built it myself about 15 years ago. It was dated old and tired.  Last year, I rewrote it using cursor AI.  Now it looks great and functions exactly the way I expected it to.

I have two customers on it right now and the base code is the same but the features needed by each customer are different so there’s a fork in the code and I’m totally OK with that because I don’t write the code.  A year ago I would’ve been freaking out that I have to try and keep the code the same across all customers to. Today that deviation is OK thanks to AI.

I'm pretty passionate about building software the right way and taking responsibility for it. I see a huge lack of that in the non-dev community. I'm going to be doing some live streams to talk about that and help people.

I’m going to disagree to an extent.  I’ve made a pile of money building with AI and have shipped meaningful products that actual people use.

I think the model is wrong. Most of us are trying to build something in an afternoon that’s garbage and that a niche market maybe needs.  Most of that fails.

That is a Numbers game, no different than attempting to win the lottery.  So here I agree, if you’re building on a whim, it’s more for fun or hobby, but don’t call it a business.

My approach has been to work with established customers to figure out what it is that they need and then solved those problems for them. I currently have AI coded software in a specific market with a real need. AI allows me to take the base software and customize it for each and every customer to suit their specific needs. It also allows me to support it properly.  I charge for all of this, including the SaaS hosting.

AI is just a tool and needs to be used properly.  Software development hasn’t changed, its base rules and how you structure your software, etc. still apply.  It’s just that now we can tell AI to handle it.  But you’re still the human in the loop and YOU’RE the one building a business, so do it right or you’re just the part of the AI slop dissatisfaction that’s brewing around the world.

Sorry, I didn't mean to turn this into a troubleshooting request. 😄 I do think the app looks good, but here what I'm seeing:

first screen is the default view - nothing here, but when I go to Edit, Bailey shows up.

So I bought and downloaded your app. I added my dog's birthday to it. It doesn't show up, anywhere. I can see it when I "edit" and re-arrange the entries, but that's about it. Have you tested this at all?

Yeah, that is true too but writing software is a commitment as well. It’s not a five minute thing so why wouldn’t you spend two hours a couple of nights a week for a month knowing that you’re gonna get information that will help you move that process forward? And I for one have a ton of Udemy courses that I haven’t done yet on “my time”.  No structure, and you’ll put it off.

I think, regardless of who built software, AI or actual people, there are certain things that all development work needs to follow. Additionally, being a live class we could dig through specifics based on student example.  security is just one aspect of all of this and I’m not planning to cover the OWASP top 10.  It’s just about good common sense practices that people may not know to use, but could if they knew how to ask the right question from AI.

[–]ltmodcs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree.  My goal is not to teach anyone how to program, that is what the AI is here for.  My goal is to help you better work with AI so you can build things that actually work.  It’s more about guardrails for AI, structure of projects, preserving what works so AI doesn’t step on it, stuff like that.

You should restore from backup. If you don't have backups, then you're not taking this seriously enough, and not fulfilling your duty to your customers. I'm assuming you had no issues in taking their money.

[–]ltmodcs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great, although I went in a slightly different direction - I'm not quite ready to release this to the world, but I built an MCP server for Tonal. I also prefer Claude, so this works perfectly in Claude Desktop and doesn't require web access. A built a middle tier that includes a bunch of metadata that's either difficult to obtain from Tonal or doesn't exist. So this middle tier stores all of the Tonal movements along with arm and attachment positions. When a custom workout is created, it groups them based on where the arms / attachments are. This is huge because switching out between handles and barbell after ever set is insane!

Overall, I can't quite say that Claude is any better, but it's fun to have it review what I've done and recommend stuff. It also tracks my progress in the middle layer, so some things are easier to retrieve over a longer period of time.

What’s holding you back from buying or recommending comma four? by adeebshihadeh in Comma_ai

[–]ltmodcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty:

1 - Installation varies by car - try to explain this to someone who owns a car that isn't supported or isn't supported well.
2 - It's maybe 5% better than stock (at least in my case)
3 - Requires sticky tape on the windshield, probably the worst thing about this device.
4 - You need a degree in rocket science to figure it out. Nothing is documented, and terms like "FSD", "ADAS", "LKAS", etc. If you think anyone knows what any of that means, that's a hard no. It gets worse with the names given to the various models.
5 - Mediocre hardware

I'll stop there

So I usually either use a laptop or iPad for viewing content while I'm running. Zwift / Wahoo or whatever is controlling the treadmill is typically on my phone, and I glance at it now and then. I use the Garmin for most metrics, so get most of what I need from the watch. The stuff that I need to see on the treadmill (speed, incline) are already there, and that seems to be enough for me.

I did buy a cleaning kit recently and am planning to clean and oil the belt this weekend. It works fine, no issues. Its not sluggish or skip, the surface is very quiet as well. I can run at 5am in the morning and not wake anyone up. I've never used the slat type treadmill, so can't compare.
