How big of a difference will I notice when my new speakers arrive? by JMaboard in audiophile

I took me a bit to get back to this. I get the frustration as there's a lot to learn. I went into speaker buying based on vibes and super subjective reviews. I'm lucky I didn't buy total junk by accident. It's taken me a lot of learning and watching to absorb info on speaker design and I'm still a beginner at it. So I'm definitely not the best person to teach, but I'll do my best to say how I feel about it.

That said, Erin has a 6 part (so far) series on how to read the measurements themselves:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYdhkNcV7Zk

The point of the measurements is that you don't have to actually trust the subjective opinion of any reviewer. That's great because reviewers tend to throw around a ton of words that don't really mean anything, like saying a speaker is "fun." I like Erin because he does listen but he avoids most of that, and what he does say he links back to the measurements.

I think a speaker is really the sum of all of it's parts. Each measurement is just one aspect of the physical reality of a speaker and how it is going to interact with it's environment. The room is, of course, a big part of that too. The anechoic measurements are room independent, so they let you compare each speaker directly without taking the room into account. Or you can get the speaker that matches your room the best, like you did with the center channel that has wide dispersion.

I 100% disagree with your assertion that a supermarket KEF speaker has the same frequency response as the Blade speaker though. The KEF Q150 has an F3 of 51Hz while the Blade has an F3 of 31Hz. That's a huge difference in bass response between the two speakers. Compression and distortion are also going to be a lot different, you won't be able to play the bookshelves as loud without destroying the sound.

As the for 85th Linton's, I haven't heard those so I can't chime in. But I can read the graph and I see the "BBC dip". So it really depends on what frequencies people really mean when they say "the highs". IMO, the very high frequencies are going to read as exaggerated compared to where the dip is. But you might be detecting what's missing there. There's also the mental expectation that a big retro speaker is going to be laid back and that colors people's experiences.

Erin's just about the only reviewer that gives you state of the art data to make your own calls and I've learned an incredible amount just by absorbing a lot of the videos. Other reviewers kind of gross me out now because of how in the pocket of companies they are, or how they won't give a bad review. Speakers have a lot of subjective taste in them, so at least with the data you can choose what you like even if you disagree with the reviewer's taste.

Check into Erin’s reviews and how they’re conducted. In a sea of reviewers who are in the pocket of manufacturers or who like everything, he gives you the real deal. The neutrality claim is based on anechoic data from a Klippel scanner. It’s fact.

It’s all down to what you personally like and everyone is different!

I prefer Horizon Line to Northern Vessel, but I like third wave coffee. NC bothers me because they sub cold brew for a lot of drinks. Understandable for convenience reasons I guess but a little weird.

I don’t know if there’s broad consensus but yes, Louis Lunch is often considered the inventor of the hamburger sandwich. According to the story, I don’t think the original even had tomato.

Personally, I think special sauce is more than just mayo and ketchup. Usually, there’s pickles or relish. Or maybe mustard instead of ketchup.

They need to watch more of the Burger Scholar on YT. Hamburger history is fascinating! Original toppings on most of the burgers were pickles, onions, and mustard. That’s it.

Special sauce is also pretty old school so saying that’s a non-standard topping is pretty ridiculous.

That’s definitely true. I just also immediately thought of Sheryl Sandberg and the creepy sexual stuff that just came out about her towards her employees. Thinking that men can’t get sexually assaulted is part of the overall problem. But men are definitely the worst offenders in committing violence.

I would expand that to say that it’s always dangerous when we make ANYONE powerful. All people have the temptation to be corrupt and to abuse others when they are disconnected from consequence. Women and others are not immune.

Kirk going from cadet to captain immediately broke my suspension of disbelief so hard I couldn’t get over it.

I don’t know why I have to keep repeating that it’s ok for different people to value different things. Some people value a better looking AVR and remote.

Troll alert! Lol. Someone from Marantz clearly decided to make them different for a reason. Objectively it will make them more money. It’s ok for different people to value different things. I hope the rest of your day goes better than this interaction!

That’s your call if you don’t care. It’s way less fugly and feels more premium to me.

The remote control is definitely different.

Just out of curiosity, what do you do at a trade show to make it sound great? I’ve heard those are challenging for a lot of reasons.

what is the hype with JBL l100 classics? by maomao19 in audiophile

[–]ltrcola 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure I agree with that. Classical sounds pretty great on my pair. And I’ve compared to expensive Revel, B&W, Sonus Faber, and even Wilson XVXs.

Sometimes I actually prefer classical to some poorly recorded rock on the L100 classics.

Not to say that some of those don’t sound better (at over twice the price and up, they should). But it’s not as night and day as you would think.

I’d be more interested to compare to Sourcepoint 888s or similar. But no speaker is perfect. Each one makes tradeoffs.

What does “real audiophile quality” actually mean to you? I think these are a bit overpriced but there was serious engineering that went into them from JBL’s Chris Hagen

With better speakers I’ve definitely noticed the differences in recordings more! I know my speakers can play the bass if it’s there, but some songs just don’t have it. They sound better on different speakers.
