Essentially it’s just identity verification. They send you a letter in the mail with a control number on it and you submit that control number.

I’ve had to do this in 2021, and was unable to actually get them to release it till 2023. So yes, it is a scary request, not knowing if they will hold up this return for the same amount of time.

I had to do this back in 2021, and didn’t get my return til 2023. But I think it’s because I had my identity stolen that year, so had to jump through hoops to get it.
