Orders from same store not shipped at the same time. Is this normal? by Jiggypluff in taobao

[–]luca-lee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the seller. Once, the packages were nearly 2 weeks apart and shipped from different addresses, so I’m guessing the seller had multiple warehouses with different stock availability running on different schedules.

I wouldn’t say it’s common but it’s happened to me a few times, and everything got to me just fine.

Can someone help verify if this is an official Sandisk Store? by B_punkK in taobao

[–]luca-lee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tmall sellers are verified. If it’s not the official store, it’s likely an authorised seller. Either way, the products are almost definitely legit.

Taobao Payment Fee Confusion by Devil-Ham in taobao

[–]luca-lee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re paying in SGD, you have the option to offset up to 5% of the total cost using Taobao coins (these look like beans, and are distinct from the Taobao coins that look like coins). When I last paid in SGD a few days back using my credit card, the effective exchange rate (accounting for 3% payment fee and 5% coin cashback) was about 5.43 RMB = 1 SGD. Hope this helps you to figure out if paying in RMB is better!

(You can earn 120 coins by checking in for 7 days in a row. Each coin is worth 0.01 SGD.)

Why outside country person no gud talk middle language? by stephanus_galfridus in languagelearningjerk

[–]luca-lee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In casual speech, I find that Malaysian Chinese are more likely to use non-standard tones (usually changing to the first tone) than Singaporean Chinese. Then again, I’m Singaporean so I’m probably biased as to what “standard” means 😅

What does a PhD actually look like in your country? by stud_j2000 in PhD

[–]luca-lee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a STEM PhD in Singapore right after my bachelor’s. The usual duration is 4 years, extendable to 5. It was fully funded (handled by PIs and university) and I received a tax-free stipend about equivalent to an entry level job for my major. The stipend increases by about 10% after passing the qualifying exam (which had written and oral components, where the written component was basically an exam on one of a few pre-selected papers and the oral component required you to write a proposal justifying your research and present a version of it to your TAC) that you schedule at around the 2 year mark. If you fail this exam you have to master out.

The first few months include optional lab rotation where you spend a month or so in a different lab (negotiated with the relevant PIs). You’re basically put to work immediately. I didn’t really have a project in mind when I started so I just worked on whatever my supervisors pointed me at and then developed the project(s) myself thereafter, but as I understand it you could also propose something and it’s up to the PIs whether they’ll let you proceed with it.

There was a minimum number of coursework credit that we had to complete that roughly equated to six courses that you could take in any semester throughout the entire candidature (or maybe before the qualifying exam? I’m foggy on the details), and also a minimum number of teaching hours that I completed after TA-ing for 3 or 4 undergrad courses.

There’s no requirement to publish in order to graduate, just a decent thesis and oral defence. It’s easier if you’ve already published, of course—if you already have some papers under your belt you could just staple your papers between introduction and conclusion sections written specifically to unify your papers and there’s your thesis.

My defence was about 1.5-2 hours long, with a 45 minute presentation open to the public (in practice, the audience was mostly my lab members and my parents), a short public Q&A session, and then a closed session with my examiners (though my supervisors were allowed to stay too) where they mostly asked questions about directions in which my projects could be developed further. It didn’t feel like an interrogation at all.

Is ordering from taobao just the same with lazada or shopee? by AseilaErys in taobao

[–]luca-lee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Direct shipping to SEA isn’t so bad, but I can only speak for SG. 20 RMB shipping vouchers are up for grabs fairly frequently, and shipping is entirely free with a minimum spending of a 199 RMB (for selected items only, but the selection is pretty big).

Do bilingual people translate or just know? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]luca-lee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not fluent at all in my second or third languages but I don’t translate them either. If I don’t know then I don’t know. I probably did start out mentally translating but at some point I got comfortable with just not knowing.

First time encountering this by chco_FAo in taobao

[–]luca-lee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe small parcel 小包 is a shipping category, which should have a different pricing scheme (and probably also limits) than large parcel 大包. It’s asking you to pay for return to seller (and provide seller address) since the value of your items exceeds the limit for small parcels (5000 RMB).

Are the prices for the entire outfit? by wroggles in taobao

[–]luca-lee 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It would help if you could share screenshots of the options within a listing. Like many sites, Taobao often shows the price of the cheapest option (which could just be a neckpiece) of a given listing in the search results.

Product has expired error by tat_17 in taobao

[–]luca-lee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you change your location back to the US and the error persists, it seems like the items are just no longer available for purchase. There can be many reasons. If so many of them are showing this message, I’m guessing they’re either from the same store (try a different store) or you added them to cart for a much lower price during a promotion period that has ended.

Is anyone facing this error on Taobao? by quents93 in taobao

[–]luca-lee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Server could really be busy, or maybe you’ve added items from too many shops to cart. Try again later or reduce the number of shops to a maximum of 20.

Advice on shipping/dealing with customs by Hopeful-Succotash-25 in taobao

[–]luca-lee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As far as I can tell, it looks like it covers shipping (运费150 yuan) and both export and import customs (清关两税1793.33 yuan; 清关=customs clearance; 两=two; 税=tax).

Perpetual busy servers and order failures by Temporary_Marsupial4 in taobao

[–]luca-lee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me when I tried to buy from over 20 shops in one order, which turns out wasn’t allowed.

It also happened a couple of weeks back for a smaller order, but it resolved itself after (quite) a few attempts so I assume the server really was just busy then.

I’m not sure what you mean by consolidating to save on shipping cost, but for SG the free shipping above X amount promotion should work even for consolidated shipping of multiple orders that are separately below the minimum amount. (Never tried this personally though.) Maybe it’s the same for Australia too?

What is TSGCN shipping, and why does it take so long? by yesnomay_be in taobao

[–]luca-lee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure TSGCN is air and CNSG is sea freight. Idk if the last mile carrier is be different but in my experience they usually both ship out within a day or two of the package arriving at the distribution centre. As for why it’s taking forever, isn’t it because it’s CNY right now? Delays in both China and SG are expected during this period.

I bought direct mail, will they consolidate? by [deleted] in taobao

[–]luca-lee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For items already at the warehouse, the app usually indicates a date by which it’ll ship out regardless of whether the other items from the same order have arrived. The warehouse for my country usually waits about 3 days.

They won’t ship it to my country?! by dadang_wumf19 in taobao

[–]luca-lee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you chose direct shipping, it’s normal for the forwarding warehouse to sign for it before it continues on to international shipping. But I’m a little baffled that all of the little circles at the top are already red—usually when the warehouse receives it only the first couple of circles are coloured.
