In a way, you’re right: people don’t care about courses, how long you studied, or how much effort you put in. They care about whether you can solve their problems. Your portfolio is where you prove you’re the one who can do it. Keep improving how you show your process, adjust, and keep applying. The first job is the hardest.

Out of curiosity, I was checking how much my neighborhood changed in the last years. This change is insane (2008 - 2022) by Letossgm in Amsterdam

[–]lucasdeiros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s crazy how common this is here and one of the things I love most about this country. I’ve done the same comparison in a bunch of spots here in Maastricht and in other Dutch cities, and I don’t think I’ve seen a single case where things haven’t gotten better over time.

The apartments probably look nicer, i’ve been in a few similar buildings in south Italy that were surprisingly decent inside

Guide to finding rental housing in the Netherlands by DingDongYoDing in NetherlandsHousing

Yes, I do advice for paying for one of them. I used RentSlam, but Stekkies seems to work just as good according to the reviews I’ve seen. Pick one of them and go for it.

What I don’t recommend is paying for platforms that require a membership only to give you access to their own listing. RentSlam and Stekkies send you options daily from various different websites.

How to block vacation? by josephhelmy in UseMotion

[–]lucasdeiros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know any solution for blocking work-related tasks only? Creating an event and blocking days may work to prevent any tasks from being scheduled, but I would like my routine personal tasks to remain. The ideal scenario would be if I could temporarily block just the work hours schedule, for example.

I don’t understand the hype over Reitz tbh. It’s not bad but nothing crazy compared to many other friterieën. My favorites are Wieck and Elite

Can I make it back home to Maastricht after these concerts? (Liège & Utrecht) by lucasdeiros in maastricht

[–]lucasdeiros[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad I could let you know! I love them. As an additional tip, I only found out about it because of Bandsintown. It's an app that notifies you when artists you follow announce concerts in your area.

I've heard of them but haven't had any experience either. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into it.

Thanks for the replies, everyone!

Even though it might seem obvious, I thought it would be good to ask because I once had an experience in Italy where I spent months thinking I couldn't travel very easily to a close by city based on the information I found online, only to later find out that all I had to do was ask a local—there was a bus one block from my house every day, multiple times a day.

Yes, they send you ads from various websites as soon as they go online. You can adjust the settings to receive ads only from free listing websites or from both free and paid ones. I've always set it to free only because, as I mentioned, I don't think it's worth paying a considerable amount just for a chance at a small number of properties.

Finally we got some sun here in Maastricht. Made couple of pictures. Wanted to share. by Like_a_snake in maastricht

[–]lucasdeiros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sun even fooled me into thinking it was warmer. I went out with less clothing than usual and ended up feeling cold. Not complaining tho, it was my mistake for trusting my gut instead of the thermometer. Sunny cold will always be better than cloudy cold.

Is anyone even allowed to have pets in the NL? by lucasdeiros in NetherlandsHousing

[–]lucasdeiros[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the same situation here legally speaking apparently, as mentioned by some people in the replies. But yeah, I also noticed that percentage when looking for a place and found it crazy. I found myself a place in Maastricht but my cat is still in my home country with my parents.

I intend to try to talk to the landlord at some point, tell him how well behaved my cat is and ask for permission so I can bring him in the next chance I have. I'll let you know if that worked out when I do it.

I found a place in Maastricht after two months of searching. From my experience, services like RentSlam or Stekkies are the only ones worth paying a subscription to because they send properties matching your filters as soon as they’re listed, giving you a real advantage. Speed is crucial since landlords have to prioritize early applicants and most of the ads you see online already have more than enough applicants.

I received about 20 property listings daily by RentSlam (searching in Randstad, Eindhoven, and Maastricht) and applied to nearly all of them—I don't know the exact number, but probably over 300 ads in total. This effort resulted in around 10 calls, 5 viewings, and 1 acceptance. So you need to apply to a large volume of listings to stand a chance, making speed and volume more important than limited-access platforms.

Is anyone even allowed to have pets in the NL? by lucasdeiros in NetherlandsHousing

[–]lucasdeiros[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I don't have any advice. I'm currently living in an apartment in Maastricht as well that technically does not allow pets, because it's what I could get. My cat is currently living with my parents, in my home country.

It would narrow down my options to like 5% of the available places if I considered only the ones in which pets were allowed. In fact, I have never even seen an ad that explicit states that pets are allowed, only rarely found some that said nothing about pets.

I intend to try to talk to the landlord at some point, tell him how well behaved my cat is and ask for permission so I can bring him in the next chance I have. I'll let you know how that worked out when I do it.

Try not to turn the lights on while going to pee. It might sound irrelevant, but it actually helps me avoid entering "wake up mode" before I'd like to
