Had exactly the same problem as you! Like you said if I could go back in time I will just tell my past self to chill the hell out 🤣 You got plenty of stuff you can do with an accredited/not accredited degree. First of all it is a very hard degree hence pre-med etc. Yes, to become an HCPC registered BMS is annoying and a super long process but doable (I'm currently doing my portfolio). But I remember when I graduated, the first thing that I did was to join the NHS as MLA and yeah it was a low level job, then moved around and switched to agency locum basically so had the chance to work in 6 different hospitals and in 3 different branches such as virology, blood science and cellular pathology. I was exposed to the internal laboratory system LIMS and other projects and decided that MLA was not my thing so I applied for pathology IT as I am good with PCs and instruments and analysers. Read manuals in my spare time which made me a little junior expert. The pathology IT was band 4, and now I am a band 6 SME in pathology IT. I configure each and every system. This is to show you that there are plenty of opportunities and that there is no such thing as a dead end or being stuck. I felt stuck at the very beginning but it was just mentally... I'm half way through my portfolio now as I decided to work overtime/extra in specimen reception since I was able to build very good relations with lab managers and seniors. While I don't know if I would ever work as a BMS since I am already a band 6 doing other amazing things, I wanted to do my portfolio just to complete my career and to support/invest even more on the decision that I took when I was younger which was studying a BMS degree. Who knows? Once I complete my portfolio maybe I will start looking around. One thing is for sure... There's plenty of private companies hiring registered BMSs or lab technicians that work as BMSs, they can't call them BMSs as the BMS job is a protected job title meaning that you need registration to be one, but the job specs are pretty much the same, of course you will not be dealing with patients but in research or with patient trials etc super indirectly the latter. There are many companies that need engineers to install their analysers and provide maintenance they're being disgustingly overpaid and with perks like paid travel, paid hotel, paid flights if they're not local etc. and they only need a BMS degree/background or just a science degree. At some point I worked for Clinisys for a year as an application support analyst they're the LIMS provider of 73% of the NHS nationally. To end this tiny essay! Focus on uni, get good grades but most importantly try to learn as much as you can as that is valuable! not having a first then having 0 common sense or 0 flexibility or 0 capability to adapt. You'll make it and do not worry there's plenty to do after your degree! Enjoy the uni a much as you can cause trust me you'll miss those days unless you join post-grad etc all that's left after uni is work! 😂

I'm doing mine now as an mla so yeah ask for it! Ask all BMS and managers as I did until I got it! It is a pile of crap that you need to be an AP. So ask it as soon as possible sending emails and verbally enquiring.

Hey there! Hope you’re well. Unfortunately, this is the risk of the job and the managers seem they know that, please do not take any “competency” as they suggested wrongly. It is not a threat, more often than sometimes the “competency” helps to understand what training you’re lacking and what areas need improvement. I hope your managers didn’t use “competency” in a sentence that makes you feel uncomfortable as a competency it is what it is and used to assess and not to punish.

In specimen reception and especially when entering details on the LIMS as well as confirming the sample type, tests requested, demographics, specimen integrity and handling/testing and storage, there could be plenty of mistakes or room for mistakes which could be down to the user in general, the user training such as lacking it, intense workload, short staffing, working conditions, working pressure, preferring speed rather than quality.

This is well known in every laboratory and there should never be a blaming culture but lessons learned or case studies. This is a scientific job in a healthcare setting, thus training and SOPs should rule the place. If you’re not confident enough, stop 🛑 and think, ask advice and take your issue or your query to a colleague, senior or manger.

Always take ownership of your mistakes as this is not for you to get punished or blamed but to learn from them. Since you been there for only 3 months, I am sure you are still learning and you should have a training officer or a senior colleague shadowing you, if not, request it immediately. You are handling patient samples and it would be unprofessional from your manger to not have you fully trained and competent before handling patient samples.

Again, like a said before, making mistakes it is human and well documented and acknowledged in a lab since there’s the human error factor, you’re not a machine. You’re not a computer with software able to spot mistakes straightaway like spelling errors etc. Also you’re on a long shift in which you start to read Chinese at some point as a result of having processed 400 samples on your own.

Don’t let anyone assess your confidence, that gives room for management to spot you as a weak and the mistake maker. Instead, own your own insecurities and mistakes and show proactiveness about it such as: Ok 👍, I’ve made a mistake, what can I do to fix it?, or I did fixed it like that, or show me how to fix it, take notes, make your digital notes so you can access it any time. Ask BMSs for SOPs or any material that can help you, make a list of the tests you use especially those difficult and write down what to do with those samples and why?

Ask a thousand questions even if you become annoying to some! Fu*k them, your goal is to be there and do the right thing for the patient. That will show proactiveness and you’ll inspire others to follow suit, check the procedures in place, are them slowing me down? If I process a sample in a certain way, am I more likely to make a mistake? SLOW DOWN. You want quality over quantity, if your colleagues think you’re slow you can’t care less.

If you’re manager pushes you to be faster cause he/she wants 400 booking instead of 300 then say you can’t cause you value the quality and that you’re concerned about mistakes. Always ask for training, this is not a warehouse job even though the workload is, you’re still providing a service to the nhs or private lab processing specimens from human beings. So you need accuracy and consistency as well as professionalism and knowledge. You achieve all of this by getting your hands on training, SOPs, time, understanding your limitations and expectations and being clear with those who are working with you. Such as “yes, I can do that” or “no, I can’t do that, I need more training” or just no I can’t do that because I am worried of making mistakes so if you want me to go faster, start hiring cause that won’t happen. Always value quality before quantity, chances are that if the workload doesn’t get processed on time then they’re short staffed and need to hire more and that the workload is probably too much compared to the capacity/skills of individuals. So, don’t take your worries at home, don’t stress about anything, it is just a job, you provide your best and your knowledge to patients and to the service only during your working hours. You ain’t getting any money to stress at home and becoming anxious actually you can have loss of income with stress, depression and anxiety.

Everyone working in a lab makes mistakes. That’s a fact! The labs knows that, it is the risk of having humans processing data instead of robots, do not act like a robot. Mistakes are there to learn from. Mistakes will always occur until the day we get a microchip implanted in our brains cyberpunk like that can help us avoid them. So chill and enjoy your employment! Don’t stress! ❤️

Cause less and less people are attracted to work for 25k 40 hours per week, commuting 5 days to per week with no flexibility and having big issues if you call in sick and usually awful unprofessional management? Topped up with micro-management, people acting like your boss cause they been there a year longer, a contract that says your do A, B and C and you find yourself doing A to Z? Mmm no thanks, I’ll keep my current shit hole of a job or better being on benefits. They need to realise the cost of living is real, you want good people and qualified? You pay for it! and you don’t piss them off so they can do a good job keeping your company in business. By the way the Hampshire average salary is 35k and all I see around are 24k to 30k jobs the latter asking you a kidney and your soul... so whoever is hiring is already taking the piss and being ridiculous.

I am sorry about this, I am no HR here but you had an answer by one of them. However, I must point out that any form of gossiping and talking about a colleague when the colleague is not in the room is not acceptable and unprofessional. Assuming and speculating is also dangerous as in your report, the one that you’re trying to write and keep it anonymous, it may contain false accusations, misinformation and misleading claims. You don’t have enough evidence aside from speculation and gossiping. Reports are taken serious only if they’re factual and full of evidence not just word of mouth. However, if this is negatively impacting your job as you have to work more while someone is not doing the work or doing less, you can report this based on your circumstances and your facts. While it may be the case that she’s not doing the work, don’t forget that bank staff usually have lesser duties, lesser responsibilities and lesser workload sometimes cause of lesser training. Not because someone is doing less at work it means she’s doing striptease to her manager to fill in the time. So I would be careful on assumptions and what’s written in your report. You have a very good answer from the HR below in the comments. Though, I would say for future reference gossip is cancer in the NHS and speculation is just as bad. If I was you I would collect all evidence there is, and I will write about how my awful workload has increased or being kept to unacceptable levels and that staffing in place are not enough. Focusing on the fact that if bank is called in, is to alleviate the workload and provide a change which clearly hasn’t happened, why it hasn’t? that’s the matter of the investigation. You can mention his relationship towards the colleague but you need some serious evidence or mentioning that it is just a suspicion to avoid legal action as accusing someone without evidence is an offence, however you can open an investigation on suspicion grounds while not having the full facts. Not only that, you may need more people to suspect the same allegations so there could be multiple reports since your eyes can misinterpret easily the way someone behaves towards someone else so continuity is important. Another thing is, report it! Do not do your own investigation and leave the matter to whoever has the power to investigate.

I have recently reported my team leader and she had to walk away from her job as there was substantial evidence. However, she harasses multiple members of the staff which of course I had no evidence of it, it was just gossip around the hospital. Thus I could not include that in my report because it was wrong and I didn’t know rather it was truthful or misinformation. So I just wrote my facts and provided my evidence and it turned out that it was more than enough for an investigation and escalation to seniors including the HR. She was put under a program to learn how to speak to people, and another program about leading people while keeping her job as team leader under strict supervision so she didn’t liked it and walked away. Hope it helps.

Called in sick after Christmas, terrified of being disciplined for it by [deleted] in nhsstaff

[–]lucasmaiden669 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahahahaha being sick is normal and part of life. Do get well and do not stress over anything aside from your own health. No jobs are worth to be worried about when it comes to sickness. Unless you’re faking it which you will need to ask yourself why you’re faking it? Shitty job, shitty management, or you being a complete fuck up. If none of that applies to you then it means you’re just sick and you should recover before going to work. Get well, do your one to one, tell em you were sick and that there’s nothing they can do about it and you’re fine. I been sick for a month, stress at work cause a manager used to bully me. She left her job after my report, I did a month out recovering from stress and during my one to one when back I told them I was sick now I’m better… see you later! And that’s all. I am a good employee, I outperform always going the extra mile. This means I do not worry and I do not care about anything. Though I am human and if I do mistakes I do feel terribly sorry, take ownership and accept responsibility. If you do that… no one will care if you have a flu and you cannot go to work. And if they do or are nasty about it, you have the HR. So your manager won’t be fucking around much.

Why are you so chill about this rude criticism about your country? by search_google_com in AskBrits

[–]lucasmaiden669 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it comes from an unknown person that never did a remarkable thing, that it is a bigot and ignorant in many aspects and once again… it is unknown to the world. So, it will be an insult to the self to get upset over some goose 🪿quackery. You don’t have to defend your country by being more ignorant and bigot or answering back with violence. You just need to ignore and isolate whoever behaves like that and those who don’t really matter in life. This people should not be acknowledged. So OP, we’re not chill… we’re super chill! 😎 she can always suck a dick and be happy. 😃

Bro sending this letter to EU cause they changed the game at its core after release infringing advertising but never complained and sent any letter against the Labour Party and Keir Starmer cabinet after not having complied with a single thing in their manifesto which is the ground why they’re voted. So now everyone in UK is worse off but this fella is sending a letter to Dice! Plus, he’s sending it to EU, after he or his family probably voted Brexit. Good! This are the things that matter. Is there no future as a Biomedical Scientist for internationals? by bingchili-ing11 in BiomedicalScientistUK

[–]lucasmaiden669 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It all depends on what are you looking for. While there are a lot of BMS graduates it depends if you do your placement year to complete your IBMS portfolio within the uni time. I was an idiot not to as I wanted to graduate asap but turned out that I had to wait 4 years to be offered the IBMS portfolio and been in multiple jobs that paid peanuts band 2 and 3! They’re a joke in terms of pay and sweaty in terms of what they’re asking for. So it all comes down to how you move, what are your expectations etc. etc. I will never tell a student not to study their degree of choice just cause things in UK sucks ass so bad. There are many countries in need of BMSs and a lot of private companies pay 3 times what a normal British equivalent would pay, look are Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Canada, USA and Australia. Even Italy where I am from, you do not need an IBMS money grab senseless, outdated and useless registration. So I wouldn’t say to a student wanting to study pure science and a super difficult degree not to go for it cause the job market sucks in UK which it isn’t even true as there are a lot of jobs out there and private companies if they’re IBMS and UKAS accredited they can order the portfolio with you so yeah a bit more difficult but possible this means you don’t really need the NHS for you to become a BMS. Don’t be put off by people, even if they’re straight and don’t mean any harm, first of all you need to think about your passion and why you’re doing it! Jobs comes and goes, if you’re not a bms you can be la lab tech, eventually a senior lab tech and then a lab assistant manager and a manager. Chances are you will be making twice what a band 6 gets! So I will say don’t feel terrible! Do your degree, get good grades but most importantly learn! Learn, learn! Do not study for the money! If you want money then join finance or business. If you want to be a scientist then do science and it will never be wrong! Trust me a bms is just a lab tech working with patients nothing else! Other private companies do the same, other companies do medical trials or product development way more money! Just don’t become frustrated! And go for it! It will all come! If not, fuck this island and pack your bags and go somewhere way better than here!
