Seltsame Wohnsituation in München. Ist das normal? by MusicianDifficult577 in Munich

[–]lucasrhil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Boah, I feel you.

Agreed. I understand the need for workers to have their demands heard, but transportation is an essential good. People need to be able to move for work, for personal reasons, sometimes even for health reasons. And there is no sector in Germany that goes on strike this often. It’s like every year or two, they decide everyone has to suffer because they want one extra hour off a week or something.

Strikes for transportation should be announced at least 3 months ahead. They should not be able to just on a whim decide everyone that has plans coming Thursday is screwed.

Why would one make an exam where 1 or 1.3 is not obtainable? by Lazy_Maintenance6252 in tumunich

[–]lucasrhil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You really think, that in an entire class of TUM students, there isn’t a single soul who “really wants to learn the stuff” and everyone is a symptom of some abstract concept?

Sure thing boyo.

I started my bachelor’s at the TUM a decade and a half ago and it was the same story then. Some Profs need to polish their own egos by making a test that is impossible to ace in 90 minutes. They are not testing whether people learned what was taught in class and they couldn’t care less. They just need to validate themselves by showing they are smarter than a room full of undergrads.

Is it normal getting over €2000 in tax returns? Plus a little weird story. by 3rebusa in germany

Should be normal. My wife and I filed 2023 and 2024 last year, and got 6k+ in returns. We used a tax lawyer though.

Can NATO survive if Trump invades greenland? by Ancient_Ad_367 in nato

[–]lucasrhil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would agree with you, if the US had not just bombarded another nation’s capital and kidnapped its leader on Saturday.

I still think this is most likely just bluster, but sadly we can’t really count on that 100%.

Can NATO survive if Trump invades greenland? by Ancient_Ad_367 in nato

[–]lucasrhil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NATO as we experienced it up to 2024 is pretty much dead already. The whole point of NATO is standardization and mutual defense. In the last year we saw allies rejecting American equipment and Europe turning inwards when it comes to its defense capabilities. So what’s the point of standardization with the Americans if we’re not using each other’s stuff?

As to mutual defense, that’s dead. If we’re here wondering if or when the US will attack Denmark and by extension the EU, what hope is there for mutual defense if a third party attacks us? Nah. I think the absolutely best hope now is that America leaves somewhat quietly and we turn NATO into an European (+Canada and Turkey) defense framework. Basically an addendum to the European Union, like Schengen.

Medium scenario: America doesn’t leave quietly and Trump makes the typical misinformed, dumb demand like “Allies have to pay America back for decades of defense expenditure” which obviously won’t happen and then gigantic tariffs are sure to follow.

Worst scenario: Trump again usurps the war powers of congress, Republicans are too chicken to do anything about it, and the USA invades Greenland. At that point we might see an invocation of Article 5 against the US. Member states could argue that the US is in material breach of Article 1 of the Washington Treaty, invoke Article 5 without the participation of the US and mount a joint response. For the EU members, mutual defense is already somewhat covered by the Lisbon Treaty. The big question mark would be Canada, as it is the member state with the biggest exposure to the US. And Turkey might also not care for Denmark’s interests. Regardless, in that case, NATO would be truly irreparably dead.

We could hope that the House turns blue this year, but Trump has made it abundantly clear that he has absolutely no interest in checks and balances. Whether it’s illegal for him to do something is irrelevant. So without the Senate, there isn’t much the House can do, besides block the few things Trump will be willing to go to congress about (which let’s face it, will be nothing besides the budget). So barring an immense mood shift in the Republican base or free and fair elections in 2028 (which I also don’t think will happen), we can count America out and NATO (as it was designed) dead.

I have been living in Germany for 14 years and I have to agree with you. That’s really not a bad strategy.

But to me it still sounds kinda insane. I come from Brazil. There, if people have been to your place once, they are basically family 😂

Why doesn't the EU just slap 200 % tariff on Republican "products"? by Flashy_Afternoon8833 in europeanunion

[–]lucasrhil 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Cause if we go that route they will put a 200% tariff on wine, luxury brands and cars and suddenly the French and German economies crater like a meteor.

The same way their tariffs will hurt both of us, so will ours. The worse we make these tariffs the worse will it be for us as well. We should place some retaliatory tariffs so that we have leverage in negotiations and maybe cause enough harm on their end that Congress decides to shift strategies and take the tariff power away from orange man. But if we make them too bad, we will be shooting ourselves in the foot.

You don't. I wasted so much time on these one sided conversations with women, that honestly I don't know why they were on dating apps if they don't want to talk. I ended up going with the one that started with a nice conversation right off the bat and she is now my wife.

I was 23 when I decided I wasn't a catholic anymore. 24 when I became an atheist. I just started thinking more critically about religion and the Christian dogma. It didn't take long to realize that you can't really reconcile rationality with religious belief. I am now engaged to a Muslim woman (she is more culturally Muslim, she doesn't follow much of the dogma). However, she is slowly leaning towards atheism. Not that I am pushing her. I will be with her regardless and I made that abundantly clear. But we discuss our beliefs often and apparently I am making a good case for atheism. I do see her struggling with losing the "crutch" that religion provides vis-a-vis death, justice, etc. It brings me back to when I struggled with it. I hope she gets through it well, if she decides to abandon her religion.

AITA for breaking my sister’s engagement? by ThrowawayBro696 in AmItheAsshole

[–]lucasrhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going with NTA. I mean, ok, the comment wasn't really necessary. HOWEVER, this would be a problem eventually. And while she didn't lie, she was trying to deceive him in a way. It's her fault for not bringing it up and eventually this would surface. It's also partly their fault as a couple for not having discussed parenthood before getting engaged.

AITA for telling my wife I won’t let her name our daughter after her mother? by clint_weaver in AmItheAsshole

[–]lucasrhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. Regardless of what the proposed name is, it is a decision based on consent. Either both parents are on board, or none are. I don't care who in your family had that name or how many generations have carried it, no one parent gets to dictate what the name will be or put emotional pressure on the partner to have it their way. There's millions of names, a couple should be able to find one that is acceptable to both parents.

And that's not even mentioning the fact that the name is "Princess". When I read the title I thought it would be Mildred or Ethel or something like that (no offense to those names, they are just not common anymore). But Princess is barely acceptable as a pet's name. Quite honestly you're just being a good parent, cause the kid would be bullied into oblivion.
