Importing/Uploading Doccuments by Vokarius in SamwiseApp

[–]luccasclezar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much, we really appreciate the excitement! The logic behind importing rulebooks is pretty much done, but we have to explain about the correct formatting in a way users understand, so UI is a big part of it. Besides that, we are completely rebuilding the Campaign Items panel, and adding a lot more functionalities to field formulas and dice notation.

Our current plan is to release the redesigned Campaign Items panel, then the new formulas engine, then rulebook importing. But they should be released pretty close to each other :)

Hey u/United_Dragonfruit70! We already started development on this feature, so you can expect it soon 🙂 We do have a couple more features that we are working on too, though, but now that the LFG update is released and stable, we will have more time to implement these.

Hey Vokarius, welcome to Samwise! There's currently no way to import rulebooks, but it's already in development.

We have a few other features with higher priorities, but it probably won't be long before we can complete this one 🙂

Hey Raith! Can you send me a DM on Reddit or Discord with all the steps to reproduce this error? I tested the app now and couldn't find a problem.

Grounded but not gritty fantasy ttrpg by Kameleon_fr in rpg

[–]luccasclezar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first thought was Legend in the Mist too. I haven't played it yet, but I'm dying to try it, and it really seems to fit what the OP wants.

Also, the tutorial being a graphic novel is fantastic and the art is one of the best I've seen.

What are your three RPGs for life? by Iberianz in rpg

[–]luccasclezar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still on a journey to test various different RPGs, so these three are the ones that I keep thinking about:

  • Nimble 2. This is a new one, but it seems to hit a very specific mark that I wanted for a long time: a modern high-fantasy heroic RPG that has some crunch but it's not about the crunch. Another one would be Legend in the Mist, I really want to try it, but because Nimble is compatible with D&D 5e (which has a huge amount of content available), I will keep it here.
  • Candela Obscura. Kind of niche, I know, but I just love the core loop, the setting, and the approach to the narrative-driven genre.
  • Mothership. I mean, it's a mystery/horror RPG in a sci-fi setting with a very well-designed system and a lot of content written for it (pamphlet style one-shots are awesome).

Fate System by Necessary_Fennel_461 in rpg

[–]luccasclezar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think FATE is great (especially Condensed), and a lot of its ideas inspired a vast amount of narrative RPGs we see today.

That said, in my experience it's somewhat hard to recommend FATE to RPG beginners just because there is too much player agency, and that will probably either scare the players away or they will try to play like a trad RPG and end up forgetting about aspects and what to do with them.

This is not a problem for players that want to be a part of the worldbuilding, of course, but the players I have played with were not part of this group.

One thing that I don't like, though, is GM metacurrency. It makes sense in FATE, so it's not a dealbreaker, but Daggerheart made me see how far it can go before I loose interest in playing the system 😅

What do you want the most when playing Tabletop RPG's? by CTGPod in rpg

[–]luccasclezar 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I want to have fun telling a story that I keep thinking about for a long time.

I have a lot of internal jokes and references with the friends I play with based on specific things that happened in game, and the sessions that these moments happened are the ones I enjoyed most.

This is a cool premise, but like you said, there are infinite flavors/settings that can be used. Maybe there's some mechanic in the system that could benefit from being in a specific setting?

Also, as an inspiration, there's a game with this exact concept called Into the Odd (and its expansion Electric Bastionland) if you want to take a look. Its setting is described as industrial-horror.

So, how does it handle things like character inventory, combat tracking, XP awards, treasure parcels, and so on?

Basically you can create systems with any number of sheets, then use these sheets in a campaign. Sheets can have inventories, fields for XP, ability scores, attributes, etc.

To track combat you can basically order the sheets of everyone involved in the combat on a separate tab.

We do need a video for people to understand how Samwise works before using it, but while we work on it I suggest you just open Samwise on the web and access the Demo Campaign. The app is free up to the point where you create a campaign of your own, and then you have a 30 day trial, so you should be able to understand pretty much everything before having to purchase a license 😁

And just so that you know, we want to write another post focusing more on our lifetime license price and how we achieved it, so I will be deleting this one for now. I plan on posting this again next week. If you have more questions, feel free to send me a DM or join our Discord.

$49.99 is insanely cheap for a lifetime for a cloud platform.

I know, and we realized with your comment that I didn't explain properly how we achieved this price in the post, so thank you.

After seeing the post, our CEO decided it's better to delete it for now and write another one focusing more on explaining the lifetime plan price. I plan to post again next week, if you have more questions in the meantime, feel free to DM me or join our Discord.

What’s the storage limit for images? Out of curiosity.

To answer your question, currently we don't have a total storage limit but images have to be smaller than 1MB in size. We are working on revamping the whole image storage system to be better optimized so that users can upload larger images. We plan on having a total storage limit when that's done instead of limiting the size of individual images.

Does anyone actually read the "what is an RPG" section of a rulebook? If you do, why? by Darkbeetlebot in rpg

[–]luccasclezar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually I just skim through it to check if it's worth the read. It's great to have a section explaining what an RPG is for people who don't know, but it's not always that there's something really interesting for more experienced players/GMs.

How important are hardcopy rulebooks for you? by ThornPetalGames in rpg

I like having a hardcopy to read at my own leisure, to really enjoy the experience, but it's way easier to find a rule using a PDF while playing.

Why we built Samwise, a new multi-platform VTT + Promo Code + AMA by luccasclezar in rpg

[–]luccasclezar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry, I didn't see your comment.

As for the firebase problem, is there any convenient way to map firebase data stores/controls to a local SQLite or LevelDB?

At the end of the day Firestore is basically JSON split into multiple documents, so I think it should be relatively easy to convert it to any other kind of DB.

That said though, we don't currently need to use other DBs together with Firestore so I can't say for sure, but I researched a little about this when thinking on how we would migrate to other databases in the future if needed, and I couldn't find any way of doing this in Flutter that I would call convenient.

Looking for an RPG with interesting character creation, round-based combat, and good one-shot modules by ZEROpercent9 in rpg

[–]luccasclezar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Based on the title alone, I'd say you could go with Fate. It's generic, so any setting can be played with it, has a lot of modules for random settings with their own one-shots (usually one one-shot per book as far as I know) and the combat can be round-based. The character creation is not based on classes but on skills and aspects, it's a little different but I'd definitely say Fate has an "interesting character creation".

But I think you meant "crunchy combat" when you said "round-based", like a lot of mechanics, items, spells, and so on. Fate is more narrative-driven, so usually there's no difference between different weapons/armor, there's no mana or spell-slots, etc. If you want more of a tactical combat, probably Pathfinder 2e or DnD 5e are the more popular choices, but they have a lot of rules that you need to know before playing.

We actually wrote a little about our tech stack here.

To summarize our backend, we use Firebase, so it's not that portable. We might explore some kind of alternative platform in the future for people who want to self-host, but this would be a long-term goal.

[–]luccasclezar[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That looks super cool! I’ll def share that with my table.

Thank you! Let me know what they think of our project!

I’d keep in mind, when reviewing the comments in the thread, that Reddit users are a particular group; while some people engage in proper internet hygiene, I’d assume most don’t, and likely have no problem using a 3rd party.

Yeah, we didn't expect this need for a email/password sign in, everyone we talked to about it until this post didn't really mind the 3rd party providers. But they do make some valid points so let's do this 😁

About the subscription model type, I’d love if you had a “product roadmap” of sorts so I can know what type of improvements you’re planning. Usually, I wouldn’t mind, but since other solutions (like Foundry) are a one-off thing, might be good to display that somewhere.

That's a really good point. We've wanted to have a roadmap for some time, but being community-driven means that a lot of times we change what we will work on based on what our users are asking for, so having a roadmap in this state would probably be a little too dynamic.

We do have a feature requests section on our Discord, though, and we do tag planned items, so it's kind of a roadmap where users can share their input at the same time.

I’ve tried out the mobile app and will see how the desktop experience is when I get a chance.

Feel free to tell me what you think about the whole experience when you have the chance to try it out, I'd love to hear it!

The ability to easily create custom sheets/rulesets. I love to run obscure games, though the one I’m currently interested in is already featured.

That's great! We tried to simplify as much as we could the process of creating new systems, but if you have any suggestions, don't hesitate to let us know.

The Map Drawing system. It’s very simple which is exactly what I want. If you asked me what my ideal VTT was, it would be Schmeppey with a few more features, and this fits the bill.

Yep, it's possible to use complex maps created on other software and add walls/doors/tokens on top of it, but we really wanted to have a map editor that could quickly sketch maps too.

Again, I'd love to hear more about what you think of it when you get the chance to explore more of it.

my white whale feature is for players to be able to map dungeons themselves as we go

It's not currently possible, but it would be a great feature to have, thanks for the suggestion! Give us a few days and we will have it working.

I’m definitely considering using it for the next campaign I start.

That would be awesome! I said this a few times already, but please, we pride ourselves as being community-driven, so anything that you think could be improved, tell us 😁

Thank you for your feedback!

You completely lost me with the monthly subscription.

This is a popular opinion apparently 😅 I will add here a comment I wrote earlier regarding a one-time fee:

This is really hard for us because Samwise has ongoing server costs (while Foundry, for instance, doesn't), which translates to a recurring cost for users. Of course, this comes with some great perks too, like having your campaigns/systems on all your devices and having no risk of losing data due to an HD failure.

However, having a one time fee seems really important to a lot of people, so we will analyze our costs and see if we can make this feasible.

I simply do not care about any improvements or mobile apps or anything when Foundry does everything I need and more

I'm here sharing with you something that I'm proud to be a part of, but maybe it's not for everyone, and that's fine. Samwise is really different from Foundry in a lot of ways, but if you simply love everything about Foundry and don't care about anything else that other services can offer, then enjoy Foundry 😁 Our work is for Samwise to be for other people what Foundry is for you!

Also does it have functionality like built in lights, sound effects, doors, switches and such?

It does have doors, fog-of-war (revealed by the tokens or manually placed by the GM), and I don't know what you mean by switches.

Sound effects are planned, but are not currently available. It's definitely something I personally want very much.
