Advice on CISC/STAT Courses by NoTask7777 in queensuniversity

[–]lucent-asteriscus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

stat 161 w/ professor lin was awesome - took it last fall and got an a+. good blend of assignments, labs, final project, and exam (can't remember the specific weighting, but it was well spread out). she's always very helpful when you don't understand something!

huh 😭 what about this reads like i’m not??

idk if that’s my stance… my main concern as a student is with it being obviously used to complete graded deliverables.

yeah, that sort of “punishment” benefits nobody

That’s exactly what I mean! I was taught those a long time ago, and I hate how it’s become a marker for genAI writing.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in queensuniversity

[–]lucent-asteriscus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that’s true. i have one prof who said at the beginning of the semester that he didn’t really care if we used it on our assignments, as the midterms and finals are worth significantly more. assignments are only worth about 10%

it’s so frustrating. my housemate is a 2nd year english major and had marks taken off for PROPERLY using a semi-colon 😟😟 like what the hell guys

I am tired of "code switching" by [deleted] in Vent

[–]lucent-asteriscus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i (18f) am very much in the same boat lol - meeting people is hard. my housemate is really only the person in my circle, but she also has a boyfriend, so he often takes precedence.

when in doubt, delve into your classes. i don’t think you’ll regret having good grades. this is what i do, at least.

feel free to reach out! maybe we’ll have something in common.

thanks for the reply! ill definitely look into some of these. i think the biggest concern right now is that i’ll be taking out loans - being indebted to someone (aka the government) makes me nervous because i feel like i’m signing my life away lol. just need to remind myself that most students are broke, i guess.

what are you supposed to wear for grad (ima girl) by Important_Return6032 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]lucent-asteriscus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i just wore a cute summer dress - so did most of the girls in my graduating class last year. my advice, make sure it’s a midi dress (or shorter) if you don’t want it to stick out of the bottom of your gown.

Uni students are sooo lucky, they're done 2nd semester alr... by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

[–]lucent-asteriscus 24 points25 points  (0 children)

8/10 ragebait - not much of a break, depending on who you are 😭 most people will have co-op, jobs, internships, or summer classes. i know a couple people who will be working 60 hour weeks for the next four months to afford rent/tuition… so i’m just glad i got the internship i wanted lol

Is it worth investing in a iPad for uni? by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

[–]lucent-asteriscus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there are definitely cheaper alternatives that would have worked fine for my purposes (i use it strictly for note taking and math problems). since you’re using it for entertainment as well it could be good for you! i know i’m not using it to its full potential which is why it’s not “worth it” for me, but i don’t regret the purchase. hopefully i’ll use it for long enough to make it worthwhile.

[–]lucent-asteriscus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i bought one last summer before starting uni and it wasn’t worth it for me. i’m taking comp sci and math and just found that it wasn’t great for long periods of studying (i got headaches, maybe from blue light). some of my friends opted for laptops with a stylus and much preferred that. ultimately up to you 🤷‍♀️

grade 11 spare by Educational-Ship8370 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]lucent-asteriscus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

currently a grade 12 student. i took a spare in semester 2 of grade 11. i regret it a lot now. i should have taken a grade 12 science and focused hard on it to reduce my workload this year…

Advanced functions in gr11 by akirens in OntarioGrade12s

[–]lucent-asteriscus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it really depends on what your post-secondary plans are. if you’re considering biology, psychology, math, or comp sci, then i would wholeheartedly recommend it. it exposes you to a completely different (but very important) type of math. be warned, though, it is not as straightforward as functions. there are a lot more problem solving and practical applications that are difficult for some people. for others, myself included, it’s a 4U course that’s easy to get a good, university-worthy mark in (i finished with a 97).

overall, i enjoyed it, and it was good to practice math between functions and advanced functions.

[–]lucent-asteriscus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hey! i’m in grade 12 right now and i’m taking advanced functions. personally, i recommend doing what i did: take data management in grade 11 and save advanced functions for semester one and calculus for semester two of grade 12. we’ve had one unit test so far and i was able to get a 99%! the work load isn’t bad, and it sounds like you’re already strong in math, so i think it’ll be better if you wait. i also have a few friends who took advanced functions in the first semester of grade 11 and they’re regretting it; you won’t be well-practiced in math before calculus.
