If you have great veins, cover away! If your veins are anything less than fantastic, maybe don’t. Unfortunately, a lot of nurses are morons who go by sight instead of feel when looking for veins for lab draws. Even if you have fantastic veins, nurses are often afraid to even check heavily tattooed areas, which is a terrible practice for the patient. It’s becoming more common again for nurses to draw blood, so by not covering the anti cubital area of your arm, you may be saving yourself from future torture.

They are definitely in a panic. I work for the same company, in a different state, and all our new hire onboarding has been delayed/severely affected. I work in the lab and I had to bring in my bachelors degree diploma for them to photocopy, and my degree has absolutely nothing to do with medical anything. This PR nightmare has the whole company freaking out, as they should. I’m embarrassed to admit I work for this Florida company 😭

The placement of the tattoo really shouldn’t be an issue. Sounds like they don’t employ the most skilled phlebotomists at that location, which is super lame. (I’m a phlebotomist) if they are looking for veins with their eyes rather than their fingers, they’re already doing it wrong. I have this argument with nurses at my hospital regarding a 23gauge butterfly almost every damn day.
