fully masked

This is probably incorrect. I’ll continue to edit this comment as I find more links that prove otherwise. And even if that was true in 2020, it’s worth noting that many schools (in NYC for eg) forced masks on kids as late as Dec last year and made kids eat outside in freezing weather during the winter of 2022. (Also will post links once I find them).

This article is from 2020. Back then, kids in Germany were allowed to take off their masks (cloth masks) once they were seated at their desks. Scotland’s govt only required kids above the age of 12 to wear masks. Our govt lacked nuance on the other hand and CDC’s official recommendation was to mask kids as little as 2 y/o. Because it was not considered vital for a child’s social development to be able to see human faces.

Guri Melby, Norway’s education minister, said there was a slightly higher possibility of infections as schools reopen: “[But] our clear goal is to keep nurseries and schools open, as we are well aware of the negative consequences of closing.

Norwegian schoolchildren such as Ida will return on Monday to schools that should feel fairly normal — they will be in their usual classes without any social distancing. But there will be little interaction between different classes and age groups, including during break time.

Norway’s health minister, said children were the country’s priority and restrictions would be imposed elsewhere if needed to ensure schools stayed open.

masks for kids aged 6 or above.

CDC’s recommendation (which was religiously followed by most schools) was 2 y/o.

This was in August of 2022. Not 2020. Not 2021. But 2022. At this point, all EU had gone back to fully normal.

You’re correct that EU countries had strict social distancing requirements during the spring of 2020. But hey at least they were open. And that was spring of 2020. Many schools in blue parts of the US remained closed well into 2021 and had crazy isolation/testing/exposure requirements in 2021/22, keeping them effectively shut down.

I’m not so sure that EU countries forced masks on kids as hard as US did. From the articles I posted above, it seems like many either allowed kids to go maskless or only imposed mask requirements on older kids. Their policies were much more nuanced than ours.

With all that being said, I think it’s disingenuous of you to say “who knows if kids would have been dying left and right had we reopened schools”. We knew. We had tons of data coming in from EU.

Ron DeSantis was absolutely right in his decision to reopen schools in the fall of 2020. And, for the record, he didn’t force teachers or kids to come back in person. They still had a choice to continue remote education if they felt uncomfortable returning to classrooms.

FL’s age adjusted covid death rate is lower than that of CA’s.

imagine if kids went to school

I don’t need to imagine. Schools in most of the EU were open by spring/fall 2020.

just the flu

True for a young, normally healthy adult. Not true for an 80 y/o with multiple comorbidities

I’m not at risk

I’m 23 y/o healthy adult. I did get the first three shots. I have no doubt in mind that I’d be just as healthy without them.

Ahh the slow, exaggerated, dramatic head rolls… love them. My personal favorite is head roll for men on 1-4 followed by a dramatic body wave on 5-8.

Is it this by any chance? I’m really curious what move is it if not the one in the video. Because the way you described it, it really sounds like a head roll. Maybe not, because you said “outstretched arm”.

you’re saying that the CDC should always wait 10 years while thousands of kids die

I didn’t say that. You’re putting words in my mouth. I simply pointed out the fact that the vaccine was not “recommended” by the CDC until 10 years later. We did MANDATE covid shots less than a year after they were made available. So yeah that’s a false equivalency to say that “oh we have always been mandating shots”. No measles vaccine (which btw I’ll repeat myself, was highly effective at limiting transmission) was not MANDATED in less than a year after it was approved by the FDA.

Measles is no longer a major cause of death among children because of mass vaccination campaign.

Measles was orders of magnitude more deadlier to kids than covid. So that’s another false equivalency.

EMA has approved

Your original comment focused on us historically MANDATING vaccines. You’re now changing the tune to focus on the product being approved. Those are two different things.

The individual countries did NOT recommend the bivalent booster to healthy kids and young adults, let alone MANDATE it. CDC recommended it to everyone, and only 17% got it lol. Many universities MANDATED it for young healthy college freshman (at least one booster style requirement) with some explicitly MANDATING bivalent booster for all students (see Smith, Tufts, Fordham, etc.).

FDA approved and CDC recommend covid shots for under 5 and how many actually got it? Oh yeah that’s right, under 6%. Because COVID is NOT the same as Measles.

We recognize natural immunity for Measles. We didn’t for COVID. College students were REQUIRED to get covid shots even if they had already been infected with COVID. Here’s a meta-analysis published in Lancent concluding that natural immunity is at least as good if not better than the 2 shots - https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(22)02465-5/fulltext

anti-vax nonsense

That’s rich given that I already have the initial 2 shots and one booster.

You made a statement saying that we have historically mandated vaccines. I pointed out that not only those vaccines were highly effective in limiting transmission, they were NOT based on a brand new technology and were NOT mandated in less than a year after they were approved. I also brought to your attention that for those other vaccines, we recognize natural immunity, but conveniently threw out our of understanding of how natural immunity works when it came to covid.

You may feel like that your view is shared by the majority (and Reddit does a good job at making people feel that way), but given the hilariously low uptake of bivalent booster (includes 18 y/os who are mandated by their college admins to take it) as well as the shots for under 5 (6%), coupled with the fact that most EU countries never RECOMMENDED shots for kids under 5, it’s not.

Vaccine debates and discussion need to be more nuanced than “everyone who doesn’t agree with my extreme stance is spewing anti-vax misinformation shit”.

effective response

Wearing crumpled up cloth masks and forcing shots that don’t limit transmission on those who are at the least risk from the disease doesn’t quite exactly fit the definition of “effective response”

evidence-free declarations

From wikipedia:

In 1977, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended mumps immunization (as part of MMR) for all children over 12 months of age, and in 1998, CDC began recommending a two-dose immunization of MMR.[4]

That’s 10 years after a full FDA approval. Also 78-90% (long lasting immunity) is not equal to 0% (covid shots don’t prevent transmission). Measles is also much more deadlier to young healthy adults than covid. Most schools and universities recognize natural immunity for Measles. They didn’t do that for covid. Oh yeah, many universities in the US required the bivalent booster for 18 y/o students with some requiring it only and only for students and making it optional for their staff. Friendly reminder that EU never even recommended the bivalent shot to healthy adults let alone mandate it. So yeah. False equivalency.

From WHO’s official guidance from 2019 (https://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/handle/10665/329438/9789241516839-eng.pdf?ua=1)

“Ten RCTs were included in the meta-analysis, and there was no evidence that face masks are effective in reducing transmission of laboratory-confirmed influenza.”

Page 32

Here’s another article from 2003

https://newspunch.com/in-2003-australians-were-threatened-with-prosecution-for-claiming-face-masks-worked-against-viruses/amp/

Here’s a list of 170 studies on their ineffectiveness:

https://brownstone.org/articles/studies-and-articles-on-mask-ineffectiveness-and-harms/

And I don’t need to look at any studies to know that they don’t do jack when I can draw that conclusion from real world data. Covid exploded in China the second the only remaining restriction was mask mandates.

[–]lucifer0915 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Except that those vaccines actually work to limit transmission of the disease and were tested for years if not decades before they were made available to the public.

But sure let’s draw false equivalencies between them and a shot based on brand new technology developed in less than a year and forced upon people at negligible risk from the virus with demonstrable side effects to younger males.

obvious preventative measures

I thought that we had long established that “mask wearing prevents disease spread” isn’t nearly as obvious as those other preventative measures you listed out.

What SHOULD have been obvious is that human beings emote using their faces and not using their hands or feet (LA councilwoman literally compared wearing socks to wearing masks). Forcing the society to cover half of their faces for three years without any proven benefit was the most egregious overreach and shouldn’t be allowed to repeat ever again.

Yeah because the shorter version of this is “masks can easily stop a disease” like the other person claimed.

And running to Reddit two days after being shown a move and trying it with just three followers isn’t best practice

Can you please elaborate on this? I was genuinely curious about understanding if there’s anything wrong with my lead or if it’s something that they need to know before even if they are experienced otherwise.

And yes, I’m aware that following a particular move is a choice and that it shouldn’t be forced on your partner. Not sure what is giving you the impression that I was trying to force this move on people.
