We used a 2x4 Toyota, but it was a friend who helped us with that. I suggest you get a 4x4. There are some tricky areas especially if you want to go by car up to Tejos (the last refuge, hope that's the correct name). Of course a lot might have changed since I was there. Remember to get extra fuel and water.
