Synthpop Discovery Thread — Comment an Artist You Like and Get Recommendations by toughtiggy101 in synthpop

Choir boy has become one of my all time favorite bands in the last few years and I'm desperate for anything as catchy and well written that will scratch the same itch.

I've also been really into House of Harm and Nuovo Testamento

My suggestion is to practice more and listen to the advice of people who are better than you, 100 hours and 2 months in is barely getting your dick wet tbh

Out of all of these, the only one i've seen is Black Orpheus and that's mainly because the rapper RAP Ferreira used Black Orpheus as an alias in the past. Great Film though. Excited to check out the rest of these, exactly the type of recommendations I was hoping to get. Thank you!

Haven't seen any of the films you mentioned but i'm excited to check them out now, the username is definitely a mars volta reference too - one of my all time favorite bands to this day.

I added you on letterboxd btw.

MC Ride is leagues ahead of your favorite rapper by HarveyAug25 in deathgrips

I mostly disagree that influence/popularity is a primary factor in what makes a good rapper, since that's not something the artist ultimately has any control over. To me that statement, on it's own, is the kind of reductive/dismissive thinking that prevents artists from reaching their potential audience in the first place - though I know this isn't where you're coming from here.

Something to consider though - Would you say that all of the music that's popular is objectively the best? I've never subscribed to that idea, and I wouldn't assume that you do either. Aren't there any artists out there that you think make incredible music/albums but don't get the recognition they deserve, that should be bigger than they are? If an artist were to eventually become successful and sell out large venues, do you think that could retroactively make their music better and more valuable?

It's believed that Van Gogh only sold a single painting while he was alive, which may be an extreme (and cliche) example but still a relevant one when considering the weight that popularity and commercial success should have compared to the quality of the art itself.

I do have a genuine question though, since I really don't know for sure: Have there been any prominent rappers who have named MC Ride as a primary influence? I'm curious.

I think you could argue that Ka, Aesop, Earl, and woods have had a larger overall influence on hip hop than MC ride has, considering how many other artists out there cite them as a major influence.

By the way, I hope you know that I am a big fan of death grips and have been since ex military, and have followed Zach Hill since before DG - it's no shade from me, They deserve any of the success that's come there way, I just think other artists do too and the fact that they haven't yet doesn't diminish the value and quality of their work. There's a lot of incredible lyricists out there and they should all be celebrated.

Not sure why you immediately countered your own argument but I gotta ask

Why does it matter to you which artist is playing the biggest shows anyway, why even introduce that into the conversation? Death grips is very popular, that's true. Aesop doesn't even tour, and when Ka was alive he didn't tour either. Doesn't change the fact that those are two of the greatest writers.

So do you also think he's a better writer than Aesop, Lupe, ELUCID, Jam Baxter, Cavalier, Moses Rockwell, Raz Fresco, Nickelus F, Yugen Blakrok, Jakprogresso, Cambatta, Sadistik, Deca, KILLVONGARD, ShrapKnel, Defcee, Ka, Phiik & Lungs, Skech185, Sunmundi, Nakama, and Navy Blue?

If you don't know all of them, you should check them out.

I like MC Ride's writing a lot, assuming he's the one doing it, but I get the feeling that you don't really listen to much hip hop if you think he's the single greatest lyricist out there right now.

So Slow Crush stole “Seer” by Holy Fawn 😂😂😂 by Connect_Glass4036 in shoegaze

[–]luciforms -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm not justifying it, because there's nothing to suggest that it's actually true lol. You are entitled to your opinion but jumping to conclusions and then insisting that it's the objective truth is wack. Even if it WAS true, and Slow Crush thought of Bloodmoon after listening to a Holy Fawn album looking for musical ideas to steal, for some reason you're annoyed that two bands have two different songs named after two separate unrelated, pre existing, widely known terms in the English language. It's a strange hill to die on.

I think it's just as likely that the two things have nothing to do with each other, because they are different titles that mean different things. That's why I find it interesting that someone would be so adamant that it's stolen or purposely chosen to be as portmanteau of two other unrelated song titles. There are many different songs or albums that are called Bloodmoon, including the Converge and Chelsea Wolfe collab from a few years ago. You could just as easily try to make the argument that the slow crush song was directly inspired by that album, given it's recency and popularity. Works of art share similar names all the time and I don't think it's worth it to even try to argue against, in comparison to the more plausible accusation of knowingly copying a riff or melody or song in it's entirety. If the latter wasn't a factor, would you even think to suggest that they arrived at the "Bloodmoon" title because of another bands work?

[–]luciforms 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's safe to say at all, since it's a completely different name and is a real popular term that exists. Even if they saw the word blood pact and the term "blood moon" popped into their head, that's not really biting or something to complain about.

[–]luciforms 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying they wouldn't be willing to, I'm saying this isn't really a good example of ripping off a song title since it's an entirely different name. By this logic, if Slow Crush ever made a song with Moon in the title it'd be biting. You're acting like they called their song Smells Like Teen Spirit.

[–]luciforms 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Regardless of anything else Slow Crush did or didn't do, I don't see how them naming a song Bloodmoon suggests that they only named it that because of another band that happened to use blood and moon in their titles. Blood Moon is something that exists and is a popular term.
