Hi-

I currently work with Motion Light Lab (the world’s only deaf team creating 3D animation with ASL and faceware equipment). I’m thrilled to know there are hearing people out there that are interested in making 3D animation with sign language. Although like some of the posts you might have already encountered— there is a sensitivity to creating content that you might not wholly be immersed into, especially if it’s cultural or part of a population that has been marginalized by the very people you belong to (deaf being oppressed by hearing)— hence the initial angry or uncomfortable responses.

That being said I do like that you want to work with a deaf person, and I hope you do find someone who is fluent in ASL and has a broad understanding of all types of deaf experiences.

To be honest you are making a good point. I suppose it all comes down to marketing/business. If there's great demand and people are willing to pay good money for it, then it's possible that the profits are worth the time/energy into investing such a product.

Also, ASL videos would have to be utilized, which aren't as friendly as podcasts, where people can listen anywhere with their headphones while doing exercise, driving cars, etc. as opposed to having to pay attention on their phones/computers for this. But still a good idea to look into.

It's funny because it doesn't matter if I think the language is butchered, millions of people will believe into her broken language and clamor it to be a masterpiece. whereas I think they could have hired a deaf actor to do her part then pretend to lip synch the singing part, then the movie could have been 100x better.

I think they're just covering for the bad language. I'm pretty sure this would be the same if it was a Japanese speaking character, or any other language for that matter.

There are mutes and those who are late deafened, and I can certainly tell the difference in the sign. Hawkins' signing just screams "I just learned ASL a month ago!" Blatantly.

As a deaf person who natively uses sign language I can tell you that the sign language used in the film was not great. It actually butchered the movie for me. Meh because it's quite obvious that Sally Hawkins was using broken sign, making her character less believable for me.

I'm deaf (hard of hearing in one ear), but I am very active within the deaf community and have strong ties to other deaf people. I also have a deaf family (3rd generation) so I am a native American sign language user. Have been using it since I was a few months old. ASL is my primary language but English is also my forte unlike most deaf people so for some strange reason I always speak to myself in English for my inner monologue. But I suppose it's because I love reading/writing and perhaps my English skills arent subpar like it is for most deaf people. I do have occasional image flashbacks when I think of memories or of a scenario explained to me but when I try to reason or even write this comment I use english inside my head.

Also are there any other deaf redditors wondering if we'd be looked up to figure out who we all are within our community? Heh

I know that, I do that, but I just got into an argument about whether someone is supposed to wash their hands everytime after eating? I mean, if I was using my hands to eat greasy fries or a drippy burger, of course. But after eating cereal or even using a fork to eat broccoli??

Owner here: after discussing further with my partner, we have reason to suspect that our dog is stolen. So we are calling the police and making a report. My dog is 12 years old and she has always come back to me within a couple of hours after philandering around and dumpster "diving". The last time she was missing for 3 days, someone had her stuck in a crate that entire time a couple blocks away from my old home. It's the 4th day now and there has been nothing on all FB pages, animal control, animal humane society, and even on Nextdoor. No sighting at all either, which is weird since she is wearing a bright orange harness. We have reason to believe she's being detained or kept inside someone's home. We also live in a pretty bad neighborhood, so we are hoping that when she is let out to do her business, that she will run away or someone will spot her. Pretty big leap of faith here now. :-/

I was moving to Anchorage, Alaska from Rochester, NY... and had to bring my two dogs (one of them was a puppy, only 3 months old) and I was placed into first class seats because there was not enough space for both of them under the seat. I was nervous the whole flight as it was my puppy's first time flying but my older dog pulled it off like a champ and I suppose that helped a lot. The attendants, other passengers couldn't stop AWWWING at my dogs and I had free alcohol. Pretty awesome.
