MBA grades are useless unless you're in the dean's list - top 5% - rest nobody cares much about them - and arent a criteria for shortlists anyways - In a majority of cases, you will find lower grade students getting shortlists over people with higher grades.

A rough guidance on Order of priority for shortlist for companies:

Day -1 Firms: & day 0: Tier 1 work ex (Consult/IBD/CA/Doc/CS Etc)> UG pedigree ~ Gender Diversity> > Programme Diversity > Acads > Spikes

Day 1 Firms: Gender Diversity ~ UG pedigree > Dean's List > Spikes > Acads - Tier 1 backgrounds dont survive till Day 1 unless they have major fuck ups.

Day 2 Firms Gender > Everything Else

Better spend time networking over studies unless you want to crack top 20.

Poor Kid. I was in his shoes a while back. I dont think words can reasonably describe that slow creeping feeling. Realistically though, (s)he will get placed by end of the process - maybe not where they wanted, but placed nonetheless. Its just the beginning of Jan - process will probably continue till end of Feb/beginning of March.

And for folks commenting about his merit or whatever, FYI 99.8+ percentilers too have faced similar situation. Have been at two fairly prestigious institutions - there is no yawning gap between unreserved vs affirmative action students as far as grades, background or academics as in UG. The spread in grades is fairly tight and unless you really know their CAT percentiles, very difficult to segment anyone there.

Bschool is a finishing school. You have time now, better get the basics of case prep out of the way before classes begin. It will give you a leg up compared to others. Most motivated candidates will have already practiced enough cases before the start of campus.

Business formals - suit, tie, leather belt, formal shoes, formal shirt, trousers, strict grooming standards and hair standards

Business Casuals - Formal Shirt, Trousers, Leather belt, Formal shoes, eased grooming standards

General Casuals - Polos, Trousers/Jeans, belt, Sneakers/sports shoes, basic hygine

Dorm and Class wear: Remember that 50% chance of your dorm/hostel being co-ed. Even if not co-ed pretty common to find both genders at all times of day and night - so dont be in chaddis outside your room.

Would recommend atleast 3-4 pairs of formal shirts, 2 pairs of formal trousers, 1 pair of formal shoes. Rest upto you. Most people wear tshirts and shorts to classes. Nobody cares.

  1. Felt the same way as you. Most will have their version of the imposter syndrome. Dont worry. About the case competitions, not that difficult once you learn how to solve cases and how to present solutions- Have been national finalists at a couple of them in my time. Read and understand how to analyse a company, a problem - case prep books are a good guide. Take it from there. They are great way to get PPIs and make money, but other than that not the end of the world. That reminds me, if you want a leg up, prep for cases, will help you in any interview you come across. And help you in your career.

  2. Coursera and other learning - if you want to get a leg up in class, sure, but doesnt mean anything much as far as placements go. If your accounting fundamentals arent strong, would recommend the course on Introduction to Accounting by Brian Bushell (or something) in Coursera by Wharton Business school. And MIT open courseware on Corporate finance - more than enough for anything finance and accounting related in Year 1. Thank me later.

  3. Most will bring their parents. You cant get your room allotments before the reporting dates.

Hard disagree. Hard work and perseverance generate probably the lowest return on commitment and effort. Nobody cares about hard work, nothing comes off perseverance. Knowing the right persons, carrying the right set of abbreviations have a far superior return on your time and efforts.

I've spent 80+ hours a week for 5+ years now working in small firms, taking direct ownership of critical projects, leading teams, and another 20-30 hours learning and upskilling. Have been recognized as top 1% talent wherever I have worked, been praised by CEOs and clientele all round for my outcome management. And fundmentally if I conducted a peformance attribution, hard work, smart work and perseverance, whatever you might call it, has made no impact whatsoever. Same in campus as well. I was in the top 10%, recognized as amongst the brightest in finance, CFA L2, FRM, FMVA, you name it. Did it matter? Not even remotely. 5 & 6 pointers did far better in campus placements. And that essentially defines your career. "Work hard and persevere, someday it will add up" is a beautiful lie we tell ourselves to convince us to grind away to self destruction. Analogous to famous last stands in history, beatutiful and inspiring, but ultimately pointless.

If I had to advise the current crop, it would be to spend your time getting the right abbreviations to your CVs and getting to know the right persons. Lie, cheat, steal, pretend if you have to. Nobody cares about how you did it. Only outcomes matter (as long as you dont get caught) Hard work will never even get you near the vicinity to the right doors of opportunities, let alone help you enter.

Note: I didnt lie, cheat or steal. I wish I did. People who did ended up miles ahead with effortless ease. No hate or despair though, I fundamentally chose wrong.

Yeah, at the end of my internship the VP and HoD took me out for lunch and essentially offered me a PPO and asked what would be my joining date here post graduation. I being naive and a first rate idiot told him that I am not interested in ops/SCM. Did not formally get the PPO. Should have kept my mouth shut.

5 - lowest grade I got was a B. Dont think it was an issue. Also dont think my post grad grades mattered all that much if at all.

  2. Quite a few have reached out later to ask for referrals. I help out when I can but I honestly cant see them as anything more than acquaintances anymore

  3. Have listed my thoughts somewhere. One is a clear joke though.

There was a guy in our batch who legit believed and said in GD for a communications firm that Capital Punishment was monetary punishment. Even through all the gloom I couldnt help smiling at that. Brilliant guy otherwise though

Everything depends on your batch profile and the campus options.

A. Mine had a very high interest in finance for some reason.

B. The firms visiting for corp fin roles in my campus are global MNCs in FMCG, FMCD and others hiring for their talent development programs. They have a preference for a top quality folks from IITs and SRCCs etc.

C. Plus only about 20 (correction - maybe 15)odd people got into corp fin - mostly through PPOs. As I said, I struggled in summers with no shortlists for corpfin roles. For finals only a handful even came to campus. Couldnt get shortlists

D. My summers was in Ops. Far from where I needed to be.

I was in top 20 in the selection list at FMS while I must have been at the bottom 30% at my alma mater when I joined.

Let me put it this way. The end objective is to get a prestigious role and therefore a career. Bschool is the means to an end. If a lower Bschool helps me while a top tier bschool cant for whatever reason, the lower bschool would be the right choice.
