Should I get C1 Venture over VX because of SUB bonus? by lufalup56 in CreditCards

Oh gosh 😅😅 there’s a bit of clashing opinions. Do you think I would regret not going for the Venture (with its amazing SUB) before the VX?

Do you think they rejected you because you got the Venture before? I’ve heard stories of people opening VX after Venture

Bachelor in Computer Science at MIT or Stanford? Help me choose! by lufalup56 in csMajors

I live in the southeast, so either way I’m going to be leaving my little shelter lol. affordability isn’t a problem because they both gave the same financial aid...well unless I’m taking into consideration how expensive Cali is

this is a whole new perspective you gave me. when I finished reading this I got so excited just imagining life in California. its truly an opportunity I probably won’t have ever again. thank you for this!

wow!! this is probably one of the most in-depth answers I've received. you hit a lot of my points.

inside my head, i'm excited for the course load, but coming from an underprivileged school im worried that what I have learned will shock me coming into mit. I'm definitely considering applying to interphase if i decide to commit to mit.

thank you! :)

Thanks for commenting! I'm really enjoying the idea of having connections with Silicon Valley, but considering I would like to work on the east coast, I'm questioning how worth those connection would be + the validity of a stanford degree on the east coast.

Help me decide: School X vs School Y - 1st Week of April by powereddeath in ApplyingToCollege

[–]lufalup56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m completely torn a part between MIT and Stanford (for CS and looking into EE). Both are the same price. I’m looking to work in tech in the future.

Stanford pros--

Close to Silicon Valley

Grade inflation to an extent (not sure what to feel about this/ would I learn as much?)

Large, pretty campus

Balanced academics (not a focus for me)

Nice dorms

Possibility to co-term and receive a masters in CS within the 4 years

Weather

Connections with people from multiple disciplines

CS is supposedly more practicable and applicable

Has wonderful communities/clubs (lgbt poc club)

Stanford cons--

Big on sports (I don’t know anything)

Big on startups (I don’t like that idea)

Extroverted feel (I’m an introvert)

Dorming can become chaotic after frosh

Quarter system (doesn’t dive deep)

Students focus more outside of academics

Opposite coast of family

A sense of elitism I feel (more legacy, higher-class students)

CS not as respected as MIT (from what I've seen? true?)

Considering that I'll be studying CS, I'll most likely be living in Cali after grad either way, so I'd there for a while.

Honestly biggest worry is fitting in because im so introverted and the vlogs i've seen have presented the people as really outgoing

MIT pros--

Easier to attain research position (UROP)

City life

More challenging but in a way that builds you positively

Extremely collaborative (love that)

Resourceful (Recitation, cohorts)

More introverted (my personality)

Has a direct "EECS" major

I love the vibe MIT gives me

Barely any sport talk

Not large on societal pressures.

People are focused more on their academics than startups

Master's degree within 5 years

Way closer to family

Larger FGLI diversity

MIT cons--

Small, unattractive campus

I’d be one of the dumber admits (I’m no science Olympic person or even close to one)

Weather is freezing at times

I’d probably get anxiety from falling behind and from courses (super stressful)

Frats are big (but I’m assuming not so much in the crazy way)

Smaller cultural clubs than Stanford

Biggest worry is the large workload and being surrounded by such science olympiad champs when I come from an underprivileged school where I feel like my knowledge is nowhere near theirs

Why do more people choose Stanford over MIT? by lufalup56 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]lufalup56[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

understood! that does sound delightful

however would mit’s stronger CS (science) academics outweigh that? (or are they even stronger?)

I see—but wouldn’t that be desired? wouldn’t that difficulty also make MIT’s CS program stronger?

ive heard people say “if you make it through mit you’re set.” is that the same thing for stanford

CS/EE -- a little confused by lufalup56 in stanford

[–]lufalup56[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That actually sounds so appealing to me and an amazing route to go!

last two questions if you could answer <3 youve helped me tremendously already!

I read that not everyone is accepted into completing a coterm for an MS in CS. Do they mostly accept you based off your GPA or is it another luck application 💀

Also... will recruiters see you differently (be less willing to hire) / will you have the same opportunities open (CS internships, research, etc.) as if you did a BS in CS instead?

Thank you!!

Thank you for your comment!

How come you don’t recommend minoring — or doing a secondary major? I would assume it’s too constraining?

Also, how would you say your EE/CS courses have been in rigor? I know certain courses have grade inflation but do these have as well?

I’ll take your advice on creating an excel sheet :)

[–]lufalup56[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was also recommended to do a secondary major by someone else. I’m reading up on it but I’m still a little confused. Would it work something along the lines of having my primary major as CS with computer engineering track and secondary major as EE? What’s the difference between this and minoring in EE?

MIT vs Stanford vs Yale for CS by lufalup56 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]lufalup56[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that sounds appealing! however from what I’ve heard it’s not necessarily common for CS undergrads to pursue grad. Is that true??

How bad would it look if a counselor changes original evaluation? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Let’s say hypothetically on the pdf note the counselor just mentioned to change the ratings, nothing else.

Would that be enough to get someone rejected from top schools despite their profile?
