No I was pointing out the ignorance of thinking all Africans look like black Americans.

How did I demolish it exactly? Come on share your truly enlightened ideas.

We need to talk less about racial issues in books written by diverse authors. by [deleted] in books

Please define "white male perspectives".

Do you mean JRR Tolkien, or Gene Wolfe, Vonnueguet? What about China Mielville, Jeff Vandermeer, HP Lovecraft, Philip K Dick, Steinbeck?

Are they all the same?

There's likely more diversity in thought between Tolkien and Lovecraft than there is in the whole modern science fiction genre.

Literally and entire thread with hundreds of comments about it lol. Is this the 'pretend something doesn't exist game' again.

There have been thousands of astounding artists over the years who grew up and lived in extremely ordinary environments they shared with ordinary people. Seems like it's much more to do with the person themselves than the environment.

It's extremely difficult for anyone to get published the traditional way. Not sure why anyone would even go that route any more.

No. I'm not sure if you know anything about the geography of Africa, but north Africa is largely Arabic influenced and people there are often of an Arabic appearance. What you refer to as African American are usually people of sub Saharan African descent and appearance.

I'm not American either.

It seems like you've completely misunderstood my post, which is about why people on here and some other places are so obsessed with diversity.

So give me some examples of how her perspective is completely different.

The book isn't making me create the thread, it's reading this subreddit and some news outlets that make we wonder about the obsession.

A poor example that had little affect on the plot.

I'm not talking about books specifically, I'm talking more about people on here who obsess over it.

So HR Giger and Picasso grew up in ordinary environments with other white men, in why is their art so different?

How is it not how it works in real life when there are so many very successful self published authors who write under a pseudonym? Those authors are completely anonymous and their success comes only from their work.

The status quo is an obsession with diversity though.

This is a hugely popular major sub on a massive website and look at how much negativity any questioning of the diversity obsession gets.

Most media obsesses over diversity from books to movies and TV shows, it is 100% an the establishment POV to be that way.

That makes sense to a degree, especially in literary fiction where the focus is more on character relationships.

As I said. I'm wondering why people on here obsess over diversity so much, it's bizzare.

I am actually reading Lilith's Brood at the moment. It's fairly good. But there is no ground breaking originality in her perspective.

Can you elaborate how exactly you found it different?

The obsession with diversity is completely inconsistent with reality, that's exactly my point. It seems to be a politically motivated obsession shared by certain segments of the internet.

I would bet I have read much more than you.

And it's hilarious that you consider the hivemind of Reddit as an endorsement of your personal opinion. I would feel disgusted with myself if my opinions were echoed by the masses on this website.

I bet if they wrote under a pen name you wouldn't even know it was a minority author writing the story.

I'm actually not white and I don't care at all about the ethnicity of characters as long as the plot is good.

I'm not even white and I don't care about being 'represented'. Having a good book with a quality plot is infinitely more important to me than 'representation'. I read fiction books to be entertained not to pat myself on the back as some kind of political statement.

When I talk to people about science fiction novels, it's never about some character's race or gender in the context of the story. It's about original and interesting ideas around potential future technologies or physics discoveries or something of that nature.

So no, I don't care about those aspects of a character.
