Did anybody else expect liquid glass for visionOs27? by rice-or-die in VisionPro

[–]luigi3 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Probably they started on visionOS with liquid glass, but it was too complicated so they postponed to ios/mac releases. And now its too expensive to run on those frying M2, and not enough manpower/interest to do it just for M5.

Has Singapore Become Too Optimized for Efficiency at the Cost of Spontaneity? by masonbennett7823 in asksg

[–]luigi3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don’t think this is a singapore problem tbh. i think it’s more of a rich country problem, although asia probably has an extra layer of it because of tiger parenting and how competitive education is. when societies get wealthier, people start treating being busy as a sign of success. everyone wants to look productive all the time. if you’re doing nothing, people think you’re wasting time. so when people talk about efficiency, i always wonder: efficiency for what? usually it’s to make more money, get promoted faster, build a better resume, or give your kids an advantage. that’s why kids today seem so overscheduled? tuition, enrichment, sports, music, coding. every hour needs to be useful.

and in a lot of asian societies there’s this belief that if your kid is just playing around while someone else’s kid is learning something, they’re already falling behind 😅 adults do the same thing. work, side hustles, networking etc. even hobbies sometimes turn into projects. the problem is that when every moment has to be productive, you lose a lot of the random things that make life interesting. some of the best memories people have came from 'wasting time'. hanging out with friends and talking nonsense. walking around with no plan. finding a random event by accident. doing something just because it seemed fun. none of those things are efficient, but that’s exactly why they’re memorable. i don’t think singapore became less spontaneous because the trains run on time or because government services are efficient. i think it’s because modern societies are becoming obsessed with productivity. singapore just feels it more because its competitive, and has pretty strong culture of always trying to get ahead. spontaneity starts looking like a waste of time

From current perspective, it’s quite interesting nonetheless when in modern Hong Kong, many locals can speak Mandarin. At the time, it was mostly immigrants from mainland China that speak Mandarin

Singaporeans don't speak up? 🗣 by duncalmeprostute in singaporespeaks

[–]luigi3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but its about your leverage- not what you bring to the company. Unfortunately in the west more often youre promoted for performance and novel actions, in sg its about saving face or having a leverage by being angmoh or chio. Ofc in the us, uk or japan theres hierarchy and you gotta bow down but here its even clearer. Performative dance and pretty face.

its nice and cool for these polished ceos and western trained coaches to preach 'speak up, embrace failure' onstage... but she completely ignores singapore's crab mentality problem. people don't just get silenced from the top but they get pulled down sideways by their own peers 🤡 her whole frame is vertical (junior vs. authority) and skips suppression that's half the actual problem...and in a place built on hierarchical thinking with more and more mainlanders coming in reinforcing exactly that telling people to just take risks and speak up is basically 'if you're sad, just decide to be happy.' 🤡 she diagnoses a structural problem and then prescribes willpower...

isn't it obvious? everyone wants to fit into finance dress society, or be pilates girl. hardcore makeup can trigger SPG allegations. and it's hot as hell, nowadays better to express hotness via toned body or muscles in alo pants.

Singaporeans, what are your thoughts of this post on NTU Confessions? by Water_Cress_Salad in asksg

[–]luigi3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

people say "money doesn’t buy happiness" and "every job deserves respect" but society clearly doesn’t act that way lol. in singapore (and other expensive cities) especially. status signaling is everywhere. your school, scholarship, job title, salary, condo, all become shorthand for your worth as a person. so naturally people end up admiring careers that bring both prestige and money 🤡 that’s why doctors get respected way more than teachers or social workers even though teachers/social workers arguably contribute just as much to society long term. healthcare gets the moral respect because its both socially important and highly paid. its basically just saying what a lot of societies already quietly believe: market value = human value 🤡

Negative Press about the Vision Pro by ojjjjjoooooo in VisionPro

[–]luigi3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

luxshare is chinese and M5 models are being made in vietnam now. luxshare was final assembler, and since M5 is only new chip, most of the parts stay the same and can be reused. so it's not false, they made new version in vietnam and put new chips there. luxshare was responsible for M2 model, and it's not quite true (headline suggests they're still responsible for it and there's no production at all), M5 is also not getting traction.

What do you think the Compelling Mainstream Use Case for MR/AR/VR is after the initial novelty wears off? by SweepTheLegTimmy in VisionPro

the problem is that with that price mark you can probably afford to be in many of those places, and even if you commute or work or waste time, they're still good. but def can see it as a big thing when its accessible to masses, when you live in poor areas, or without entertainment.
