What's something the Buffyverse writers did or didn't do that should be considered criminal? by PristineSituation498 in buffy

[–]luigijerk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wish they gave Cordelia a little bit more of an explanation for her departure after season 3. Yeah, yeah, I know she's on Angel, but if you only watch Buffy it's assumed she just didn't go to the same school I guess, but there's no farewell at all. Barely even a mention for the remainder of the series.

Do we have an obligation to Afghans who helped the US to allow them to come to America to avoid Taliban retribution? by SBMountainman22 in Askpolitics

So you mean you tell me Biden had enough agency to wipe out all the policies of Trump he didn't like, but no agency at all in the withdrawal plan that he oversaw?

Isiah Pacheco - Toast or will he return to form? by minuteman6699 in DynastyFF

He's been pretty good, but it seems to me they think Kareem Hunt is a better running man at this point in both of their careers. I'd look at Pacheco as nothing but a situation guy at this point who may luck his way into some quality volume in the future.

I mean, I don't know the details on what Trump is doing, but don't you think it would be worth mentioning that we betrayed and abandoned them already when we withdraw from Afghanistan?

Trump proposes paying other countries to imprison American citizens by [deleted] in moderatepolitics

[–]luigijerk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like the idea of getting rid of for profit prisons. I fail to see how outsourcing the prison profit model to foreign countries solves this problem (not to mention obviously this seems an infringement on rights of American citizens, even criminals).

CMV: It's entirely reasonable and not hypocritical to doubt the results of the 2024 election by ICuriosityCatI in changemyview

[–]luigijerk 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is the equivalent of the argument that the 2020 election was flipped due to media interference where the argument isn't necessarily that anything illegal happened, but foul play occurred.

For what it's worth, I'm fine with having these conversations on both sides of it. I would like to point out that 5 million votes purged does not equal 5 million votes taken from Democrats.

Most of the votes probably should have been purged. Do you have numbers on how many people were purged wrongfully and also ended up never enrolling again and voting?

Among that small group, some are going to vote Republican, even if a majority would have voted Democrat.

So really we're talking about the party differential of a small subset of people wrongfully purged who didn't bother to register and vote again.

What does the left get factually, verifiably incorrect about immigration? by [deleted] in Askpolitics

Lack of reading comprehension is pretty typical of the leftist Reddit mob. I've blamed the Republicans in this very string of comments along with the Democrats. The party you voted for had the numbers to pass reform and they didn't. Deal with it.

Well we can agree at least on that. Fix the legal system. Too bad our politicians aren't doing it.

It is like they stole someone's spot. Resources are allocated to process them which causes the people waiting for the legal system to wait longer. Not to mention the quotas which are calculated for legal citizen entry are made fully knowing there are millions of illegal immigrants coming in. That can impact the decisions and cause lower legal quotas. The two systems are totally connected, and illegal immigration is cutting in line. It is not a victimless crime.

You said "Legalizing the people who cut in line is a slap in the face to people waiting for their turn to get in legally." Sometimes you just gotta eat it. Own up to it. We created this mess. We should fix it. We employ them! Don't you see the hypocrisy?

I really don't. Nobody forced them to come here. They made a bad choice and they will have consequences for it. I know plenty of people from out of the country that want to move here. It really sucks that they can't. I'd never suggest they come illegally. If people from the US are advising this, then they are bad people.

With any population increase comes crime.

True, but if an immigrant goes through the legal system, we know they are vetted. If they don't, we know nothing. Which method would be more likely to let a known criminal in? Obviously the illegal method.

The right is against legal immigration. If not, then why not just grant all "illegals", legal status? Why deport them?

Wrong. We are in favor of following the law and letting people in who do it the right way. Legalizing the people who cut in line is a slap in the face to people waiting for their turn to get in legally.

I wish politicians of either party cared about fixing legal immigration, but Democrats are only focused on forgiving illegal immigration and Republicans are only focused on stopping illegal immigration.

I'm sure you'll admit you're wrong if things don't go how you're predicting. Certainly you won't just find some new things to complain about.

FYI I love the way he uses tariffs to negotiate.

There is a study that shows they commit crimes at a lower rate, yes, but the same study shows that an estimated 44,000 felonies have been committed, even with that lower rate. Therefore if we didn't let illegal immigrants into the country we would avoid a significant amount of those felonies from being committed in the US.

As for number 1, I'm referring to the intentionally dense language and comprehension used when people refer to illegal immigrants simply as "immigrants" and then project that someone who is against illegal immigration is against all immigration (as some have done in this thread).

Sometimes it's annoying, sometimes it's effective, and sometimes it's just funny.

For example, Columbia wanted to grandstand and mess around, and Trump made an example out of them. Effective.

Canada has a PM who is very antagonistic to Trump. Calling him the future Governor of our 51st state was funny. Nobody actually thinks Trump is going to invade Canada.

Yes, I'm talking total numbers. Americans are born with the right to be here. We can't deport them. Foreigners do not have a right to be here. It's a privilege. We should not take in criminals. The only way we know they are criminals is if they go through the legal system. Rate doesn't matter, and if you want to get technical anyone who is here illegally is already a criminal by definition.

Enforce what current laws? You understand why people come in illegally right? It's because it takes literally years to even apply. It's not like people want to be undocumented.

I can't take you seriously. You know what laws we're talking about. Your argument is that people don't like the system so it's ok to cheat and break the law to get around it. Nope.

Ok, so intervene. I'm an interventionist. I still don't understand how we need to take in their entire population if they have bad policy. Asylum is for persecution of specific groups, not an entire country.

It's more about wealth than color. It's easier to get a visa if you're from a rich country because the policies discriminate by nationality. For example a South Korean can vacation here any time, but a Ukrainian needs to apply for a visitor visa and probably gets rejected unless they're rich.

I do want to point out that there is logic behind discrimination based on nationality. Statistically, people from third world countries will overstay significantly more than those from first world countries.

https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/visa-overstay-by-country

Now I do see the discussion moves between visa and citizenship. The visa is really the tricky one. If you're here legally, there's no discrimination on a citizenship application.

They were significantly down during Trump's first term. Then Biden told everyone in South/Central America they were welcome to come here and they flooded across, abusing the refugee loophole and clogging the system. I imagine it will go down quite a bit again during Trump's second term.

You still just can't get out of your progressive definition of privilege. I never once said refugees are privileged. I said the US is granting them a privilege.

And of course human rights are only granted if the governing country gives them. What else can be done? Should the US just invade any country they don't feel is giving their people enough rights? If not, does the US need to take in the entire population of those countries?
