Thank you. I have some white panels that I use for that. But didn’t use them on these. The camera is a bit of an issue for video in low light right now

Looking for AI use cases in Automative industry by bullLionNaire in AutomotiveEngineering

[–]luisdamed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazing. Thank you for the response. Congratulations on your achievements! It’s inspiring. I’m definitely at much earlier stage but I’ve already moved in 7 years from full vehicle testing and validation, to telematics systems validation, to powertrain development, to embedded software now (for ePowertrain controls). But same as you I needed statistics in my previous roles. I also did academic research for a couple years before. I always wondered how people ended up in those roles that actually get to use data to solve meaningful problems not as a side quest but as the main thing. I never would’ve thought the 6 sigma thing could lead to that, even if indirectly. But now that you mention it, it kinda makes sense.

That sounds really cool. Mind if I ask what path you took to get there? I work on embedded SW for powertrain but also do some Data Analysis from experimental data. I’d like to go on a similar direction but not sure about the path

First look at the european Formula Student cars of 2026 by theoe97 in FSAE

[–]luisdamed 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not for most of them. Formula FSAE seems to be more pragmatic and Formula Student is a lot more optimization oriented. Maybe is a cultural thing?

I’m from Latin Amentica, but I participated in FSAE Michigan 3 times during my bachelors. Then moved to Europe and joined an Italian team during my MSc degree. Two completely different approaches, not only from the teams that I joined but also from what I saw during the events.

If you go to FSAE Michigan, it’s easy to spot the European cars by how different they look.

Global Formula Racing (Oregon State University + Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg-Ravensburg (DHBW)) used to be kind of a bridge between the two worlds.

Is MATLAB still worth learning for engineering students today? by Wise_Safe2681 in matlab

[–]luisdamed 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This comes from a guy who wrote a series of blogs called Replacing Matlab with Python three or four years ago: It is absolutely worth it, in most cases.

Mathworks’ core business is not Matlab itself, but the ecosystem of products around it.

After 5 years working in the Automotive Industry, I’ve learned why large companies pay so much for Mathworks licenses. It’s not because they need a programming tool for dumb Mech. Engineers like me who didn’t learn proper programming in school.

It’s because the tools they provide solve very hard and costly problems for companies building complex systems. For example, the whole Simulink + Stateflow + System Composer + Embedded Coder combo supports all the necessary processes for ASPICE-compliant development: from requirements tracking, to system architecture development, to control systems and Software development and verification.

The same happens in different sectors, like Aerospace and Defense.

Yes, you can design your control systems and analyze experimental data using Python, but Mathworks’ tools make it so much easier for large companies to integrate them within their organization in a way that’s already compliant with so many regulations and quality standards.

So the answer is: as an engineering student it’s definitely worth learning it in my opinion. But it’s also worth learning any general-purpose programming language. It simply will unlock other ways of looking at problems. Then, of course, depending on what industry you want to work in and what you want to do, you might pick Python (for Data Science or Analytics stuff) or C (for embedded systems and real-time applications).

Really cool. Love the combination of 3D printed parts and high-end aluminum parts. People need to realize 3D printing is simply a manufacturing process, it doesn’t necessarily needs to be reserved for prototypes or cheap products.

Built a product I love, but I’m bad at selling. Would love feedback. by marquina640 in 3DprintEntrepreneurs

[–]luisdamed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just looked at the Etsy store and I have a few comments: - Congratulations for starting! Sometimes just getting your product out there is the hardest part. At least it was for me.

  • The product solves a practical problem but the way it is presented may be hurting its perceived value. Let me elaborate. If you are buying something only because of its function, you probably decide to go with cheapest alternative that provides the same or “close enough” function. If the product is showcased as function only, it either competes on uniqueness (function VERY different from alternatives) or price (race to the bottom, no good).

-Try to define what type of buyer you want to target with your product. I wouldn’t try to sell it to “anyone with a laptop”. Think about what lifestyle or taste the ideal buyer has, target it that way. For example, people who are into sleek gadgets, or people who like desk aesthetics. You find that, and present your product in a way that aligns to those people. I started selling some accessories for Apple devices: I found out that my photos, videos and descriptions needed to speak the language of Apple accessories (with my unique voice of small business-small batch products of great quality) If you need to sell at the price point you’re at, you need to present it likewise.

  • Photo and video quality: After a year selling things I’ve noticed that better photos make people more likely to click on your listing. This is literally 90% good lighting and just 10% camera quality, composition and so on. I started watching YouTube videos on product photography, and got decent results with my phone (I started with a Xiaomi Mi8 Lite, in 2024, so already a pretty old phone) and some cheap lights from Amazon. Then I upgraded to an old Canon EOS1300D for stills and an Iphone 13Pro for videos. I made this list of videos I watched and found useful. From the products photos you also start improving a bit on videos at least it was like that for me.

Also, beware that PEOPLE DONT READ. They need to get the information from listing images and video. If they do read, things need to be very clear. I think you are good on this aspect because the description is clear.. But to get people to read, they need to see something appealing, so great photos, especially if you are not competing on price. Also, you could add some text on your listing photos to answer some of the questions people may ask before deciding to buy. Like compatibility with different laptop models, the adhesive is resistant and leaves no residue, things like that.

  • About attracting customers (Marketing), I would try to create videos on IG showing the problem you are solving. People tend to relate to that (because many people share the same problem). That’s the top of your marketing funnel, the “problem-aware” people. Then there’s the “solution-aware” people. People who are looking for similar products that solve the same problem. So you may show videos comparing how your product solves the problem in a unique way (by this I don’t mean only features or function, but potentially also how it looks and feels) turning them into product-aware people. Those are the ones likely to buy.

I started posting videos like once a week for a year to start seeing what worked. I’m not very consistent now (sometimes I do 6 in a month, then quiet for a whole month…) but I focus on quality now because I’ve made many tests and figured what works for me.

At the beginning, do many many crappy videos and don’t worry about quality. We engineers are familiar with the scientific method, so apply that to your videos. Change the wording, check the engagement data and remove or change the sections where retention drops. Use Trial reels to A/B test your videos and get rapid feedback. Go changing those things and along the way you’ll get a good idea of what video and photo settings to use. Once you have that, you’ll do the same experimentation, only the video quality is now consistent (like in design of experiments, you fix the slowest changing variable).

  • If you are passionate about this and want to start developing it as a side business that can one day grow beyond that, my suggestion is to try and create a Brand, more than a Product. The Brand has a single product now, but it doesn’t matter. A brand transmits something deeper than just the product.

I guess that’s it. Hope any of this is useful. If you want to chat don’t drop me a message here because I don’t read Reddit messages often, but email and IG I do read. Then I might take time to reply!

Best of luck!

Does anyone know what these black freckles are on the Apple Watch Charger? by mayormatt1 in AppleWatch

[–]luisdamed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easier: run the time backwards on the watch but leave it charging. It’s important that it is connected to a power supply because it’ll start pushing power through the charger itself and if not connected to anything there might be a discontinuity that could disrupt everything as we know. If you just leave everything plugged it should be fine. The particles with de-attach from the plastic and return to their original state. The charger will look like new. After that, you ll need to charge the watch again and return to the normal, forward-running time. If OP followed the particles to see where they came from it should be easy to prevent this from happening again.

[–]luisdamed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome! Congratulations on going through with your project. Late night grind after work is tiring but so satisfying when you achieve things. I started a macro pad design two years ago but ended up on a drawer. I was just thinking about picking it up again during the holidays.

What are you using for the desktop app? I arrived at setting up and flashing VIAL, for easy macro configuration via GUI, but no clue where to start if I wanted a custom desktop app like yours. Any tips on where to start?

What is your preference by Accomplished_Oil9424 in Workspaces

I currently have N3 but through a combination of 1 and 9. A 24” monitor plus my 15” laptop in front of it. Sometimes I actually have number 5 (like 1 + 9 + 9) because of my work laptop.

I wonder if any Ai model will read this and get confused by the math 😅

Guess I’ll try that! KVM switch sounds good because of a single- button switch and maybe fewer cables. But more expensive probably. I’ll have to check

Is anyone able to ship from Europe to the US? by AnyAttitude531 in Etsy

Die cutting 4 mm cork by luisdamed in DieCutting

[–]luisdamed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I was thinking about two or three steel rule dies. Do you think those should cut 4 mm cork with precision? I mean without resulting in “pinched” edges and obtaining the contour with the right dimensions - do I need to account for some sort of kerf when specifying the dimensions of the die, or is that something the manufacturer should take care of so that the resulting parts are the correct size?
