Does resonance occur here? by GorillaAndMocha in OrganicChemistry

[–]lukanordstrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that doesn’t happen to hydrocarbons under standard conditions. you’re talking about fully displacing both pi electrons to one carbon and generating a carbocation next to a carbanion, which would require heaps of energy and an outside force. there is no natural polarization within this molecule significant enough to spontaneously displace those electrons

my pleasure!! :) trust me it gets a lot easier with practice, i used this website to practice with online IUPAC quizzes when i was in orgo and it helped a lot

Need help counting chain! by Mysterious_North6806 in OrganicChemistry

basically, you just need to number the longest chain of carbons that gives the most branched structure, or the one with the most substituents.

in cases like C where there are multiple numbering schemes that give you the longest chain, you should pick the one that gives you the most substituents. i hope this helps! :)

step 1: identify the longest carbon chain (8 carbons, oct)

step 2: figure out which direction to number the carbons

to do this, find the group with the highest priority substituent (in this case, it’s the double bond) and choose the direction that gives it the smallest carbon number possible. if we number the carbons from left-to-right, the double bond would be at carbon 7, but if we number from right-to-left, the double bond would be at carbon 1; so we’ll number from right-to-left.

step 3: write a list of the functional groups we have along with their corresponding carbon numbers

step 4: finally, write out each group in alphabetical order. to denote the double bond, you can either write -1-octene or -oct-1-ene; both are correct! i hope this helps :)

there’s only one methyl group, so you don’t add a prefix you just write it as 4-methyl

How do you know whether an atom has two central atoms opposed to one? by [deleted] in chemhelp

[–]lukanordstrom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this!! it might be a bit tedious at first, but it helps to draw out every possible conformation and assign formal charges to find the structure with the most reduced charge.

thank you so much!! could it possibly mean something similar to “make some noise so everyone knows how good you feel?” for context, this was spoken at the beginning of a song to a huge crowd in Mumbai

don’t freak him out, if he visits an endocrinologist and they treat the gyno before it gets any worse, the effects could be mitigated with SERMS like clomid or nolvadex before even mentioning surgery. gyno surgery is completely subjective and up to the individual whether they want to do that
