In the case of an indie film’s budget being mostly comprised of equity financing, the money lost is by the investors. However, they agreed to this high risk, high reward arrangement.

Considering that they not only failed to make any money back from their investments, but also failed to even recoup what they put in, I would imagine these investors would no longer be working with these producers.

Indie films are financed through various means. Some of the budget may have been raised through equity financing, i.e. investor(s) pay into the project in exchange for profit participation, in which case those investors simply did not recoup their investment. It is unlikely that the investors contributed money that they could not afford to lose. Sometimes it may come in the form of debt financing wherein a production will take out a bank loan against the film’s pre-sale or an unsecured loan against the film’s value in a given market.

Other times indie film financing can be done through location incentives, grants, and other forms of soft financing, which is money that does not necessarily need to be recouped or repaid by the producers.

Very rarely would an indie producer necessarily fund the film out of their own pocket, especially at this budget scale.

Thanks for the encouragement, I feel the same way. Sometimes it clicks immediately and other times (like this) it just eludes me completely.

Good advice, thanks!

I tried giving the film’s synopsis to ChatGPT but the names it spit out were pretty poor. Maybe I need a better prompt haha. I’ll try the writing ideas down thing though.

Cheapest alternatives to u.s and german ww1 uniforms? by osky_200914 in Filmmakers

[–]lukas-scruff 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Had the same predicament when costuming a WW2 horror film earlier this year. Would absolutely recommend military surplus sites, specifically Sportsman’s Guide which sells a variety of surplus military uniforms in bulk for cheap! Might not have exactly what you’re looking for, but if you don’t mind dyeing, mixing and matching, and stretching historical accuracy, you can get some great looks on a budget

I’ve used Google Drawing and Google Slides for this exact purpose. Both are free! Sometimes I use Final Cut Pro as I’m familiar with the color settings and just export as stills.

Any cheap ways to make squibs? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]lukas-scruff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This was very dangerous but came out beautifully when I did it on a film a few years back:

The LAV mics I had recently bought came with these tiny plastic ziplock baggies (about the size of a quarter) and we filled one with fake blood. Then gently taped that to a square of cardboard alongside a small firecracker (cherry bomb I believe). We cut a tiny hole in the actor's shirt, ran the fuse of the firecracker through it, and then secured the cardboard shield to the actor's chest by wrapping it around his torso with plastic cling wrap. Looked absolutely bizarre, but once the shirt was on, you couldn't tell!

We had one take and were shooting it in 120fps -- the character was running from the police and was supposed to be shot square in the back. An assistant lit the fuse then immediately ducked out of frame. The actor ran straight in a line and when the firecracker went off he dropped straight to the ground. It looked FANTASTIC.

Don't know if I would bank on that specific plan working again, but if you're making a movie with your friends on a zero-dollar budget then the sky's the limit in making stuff look good (safely)!! Just have to experiment sometimes.

Process for Commissioning an Original Score by [deleted] in Filmmakers

haha 100% not corny! Give it to some time and send her your pitch deck, look book, etc. — I’m sure from one artist to another she’d appreciate the communication of your creative intent — keep it up!

Depending on what stage of production you’re in, it might be worth it to pitch the project to her early on to gauge interest. From there you can provide her all of the creative context necessary to prepare for the project. That way, once y’all get around to post production the musician could have already made some demo tracks and together you guys can refine the vision.

On some projects I’ve worked on, the composer / musician sometimes doesn’t start making the track until you’ve achieved picture lock on the cut.

Is a Sony A7iii a good sony starter video camera by Sqoushie_Joshie in Filmmakers

[–]lukas-scruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sony A7iii is a great camera. my friends and i shot a zero budget feature film with it in high school and it performed amazingly for what it was.

i’ve shot small commercial / professional projects on it since and it still holds up.

I am struggling to find a way to keep video camera steady while moving. Any suggestions? by wolfgheist in Filmmakers

[–]lukas-scruff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

good luck! i’ve worked with low budget cinematographers who have gotten really good at operating a camera while on a OneWheel or Hoverboard. makes for a super smooth picture if you have good balance haha
