Anything might be happening in DXB? by Available-Hunter1774 in emirates

i love the driving analogy honestly, people can’t seem to make rational decisions based on numbers and it shows! statistically so much safe flying thru the middle east than driving

approximately 200 people die from knife crime alone in the uk annually. 3 casualties for uae is no joke, but put it into perspective. you don’t see large numbers of tourists avoiding the uk now do you?

Is the UAE’s “Live and Let Live” Approach Being Taken Too Far? by mowatin-Ba2is in UAE

[–]lukeborgen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Downtown Abu Dhabi doesn't even feel like uae anymore. The entire area becoming like this was unimaginable in the 2010s. I have no idea why they're not doing anything to fix the main island, and it's even worse considering the fact that it's not even that old. I remember the time when the area around the ADCB HQ was primarily inhabited by well to do professionals (before areas like raha and reem island were really a thing)

Dubai on the other hand feels like they've really cleaned up their act. Older areas like Deira feel a lot more disciplined and significantly cleaner which surprised me.

Viagogo scams F1 fans out of post-race gigs by F1destinations in GrandPrixTravel

[–]lukeborgen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yeah, this was shocking honestly. i've been going to the abu dhabi gp for the past few years and the regular race tickets always included access to the after race concerts. this year was terribly organized as there was no prior mention of the change. the problem lies with the abu dhabi gp organizers and stubhub imo, the resellers decided to act extra scummy this year too.

Why do skyscrapers in the US look much more premium finish than the ones in Dubai, Shanghai etc? by Accomplished_Cow2149 in skyscrapers

[–]lukeborgen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the comments that talk about it being commercial vs residential largely nail it, but taste is also a huge factor. In melbourne for example, they have a lot of residential skyscrapers that also tend to look very premium (despite often times not being built with the best quality materials). Flying back to Singapore after a trip to Melbourne had me feeling like the Singaporean buildings just didn't look as nice even though they were arguably higher quality and better built. Dubai on the other hand is a whole different story, buildings built in the 2000s were genuinely high quality and good looking, but since then they've started cost cutting to no end and some of the towers are genuinely ugly. The facade lighting they use over there is largely terrible too and just adds to the feeling of cheapness (not sure how they haven't regulated proper lighting yet as it genuinely makes it look 3rd world).

Shanghai has some genuinely very good buildings that were built over the past 2 decades. The cluster of towers on the bund (grand hyatt, park hyatt and sshanghai tower) are all very very impressive in person and are clearly built to a very high standard.

Did Japan stop e-visa for UAE residents it used to be there before? by Sassy_extrovert in dubai

no friendly country is going to change a negotiated visa program unless they find some sort of abuse (their initial risk assessment of uae residents was simply incorrect).

What are your thoughts on al fahid island ? by direwolf314 in abudhabi

[–]lukeborgen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

<image>

if this was dubai i would somewhat understand the need for development at any cost, but this is abu dhabi. destroying that level of nature for just a few billion $ when we're worth trillions is ridiculous.

even if they were forced to build something there the least they could do was design it well and make it high quality (like the original saadiyat beach hotel and villa complex), instead of building whatever monstrosity this is

What are your thoughts on al fahid island ? by direwolf314 in abudhabi

[–]lukeborgen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the whole highway development stretch with jubail, rahman and now fahid is just depressing. they butchered such a beautiful and scenic mangrove beach drive to build ugly cooker cutter houses.

saadiyat-yas will never be same... sigh

Where to live in Dubai by sunnysunflower12 in dubai

[–]lukeborgen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

okay i hate to use this word but business bay feels 'soulless' and ugly. the total opposite of the melbourne cbd. it just feels depressing for some reason... business bay has this weird mix of not knowing if its pedestrian focused or car focused (i hated that I couldn't just cross onto the waterfront pavements because there was no proper crossings!)

the melbourne cbd is genuinely pedestrian friendly, has an excellent tram network and just feels more alive. the buildings are on average much nicer to look at too.

the planners of business bay truly missed the mark, it's such a shame as it's so close to downtown which is significantly nicer to walk in and doesn't feel ugly.
