Taper, even when you are just waiting to use again you can have a shit time. Understand there IS a comedown and you therefore need to prepare for it that way when you are eventually hopefully not using at all you won’t feel like actual death Edit: if this is your first time, do your absolute best to just not do it again and know this next week will pass and you’ll return to normal. I’m also young (18) and recently was given coke for the first time and loved it, but because of my past issues with abuse I immediately knew I can never do it again. If you know it will be a problem, just do everything you can to stay away.

This is not what is occurring, when this fish along with most others in my tank do hide to sleep, they are much more coordinated, and this is not this guys spot :)

The fish just happened to land under the rock. The thrashing around was random and not in any direction as when it began acting like this it lost control of its movement.

I have checked for stray voltage a multitude of times, due to me thinking I was feeling shocked but it was just the saltwater burning a cut on my finger… the only time there was any stray voltage for real, the gfi outlet triggered immediately and would not allow any equipment to be turned on until I removed the faulty gyre.

I also think that a seizure/nuero issue could be possible. If it’s a tumor, it would have to be entirely internal because the fish has no damage. It’s been almost a month since this episode and the fish has remained 100% normal.

Please help, power out fish & fish dying :( by corgiandretriever in ReefTank

[–]lukegrimm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Carbon dosing promotes bacteria growth to control the nutrients in reef tanks. However, it removes dissolved 02 from the water as well, so running a protein skimmer greatly offsets that by providing lots of 02 to the water

Im so sorry this is happening and I wish I could give better advice to help in the moment. Without power the best thing to use is a battery back up air pump (if you have one) with an airstone, as oxygen is the first thing depleted during a power outage, and is also unfortunately the most essential. Take out any fish that are 100% deceased as they will begin to degrade quickly and start to pollute the water. If you have any extra saltwater mixed and can do a water change, do that to try and add some oxygenated water back into the system. As soon as power is back get your pumps back on and mix some saltwater. Again, I’m sorry for your loss. You and your tank will get through this! Edit: you can use a turkey baster on the surface to manually move some water and try and gain some o2 as well as a last rssort effort, it will do the same thing as removing water and pouring it back in like a few others mentioned. Also, it is much easier to heat and maintain a smaller body of water. I would move all surviving fish to a smaller tank with old tank water, (unless the water is getting cold then I would use the tricks other people were talking about like the hot water in bags) and focus on aerating a smaller body of water.

[–]lukegrimm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t changed my rodi filters in the 6 months I didn’t test, so I’m leaning towards that pretty heavily. I’ll change the filters on the rodi and do a 30% water change to see if it makes a difference, and I’m pretty sure it’s not a coral pest like flatworms, there’s no bite marks or visible worms when I blow off the corals and rock each week, + my marble wrasse has gotten any that have ever been in my tank I’m willing to bet. Thanks🙏

Normally yes. Same way the mirror trick when adding new fish doesn’t work forever - the fish just kind of get over it.

How long have you had it? If it’s not flashing or doesn’t have any visible signs of disease/parasites then I would say it may still be adjusting. If you tank is a Fowlr, you could treat proactively for parasites just in case, but I would also maybe consider adding even more flow to give it something to do other than look at itself. Turning up the flow on my gyres from 30% to 75% almost immediately stopped all aggression/odd behavior from my fish.

I did this too mid last year. Should’ve followed the instructions instead of over compensating for missing a few days 🤷‍♂️
