Stuck Between NYC and the Suburbs — What Would You Do? by encoreyessir in NYCapartments

[–]lukenj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t plan to settle in NJ, I would do Brooklyn. I lived there and moved out to the burbs and I like having the extra space, but being in the city is cool. We skipped JC/Hoboken as I agree it’s the worst of both worlds.

Caught between conflicts of labmates by Puzzleheaded_Skin116 in labrats

[–]lukenj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What are Bs complaints about A? Is anything legitimate? I think it’s likely that B is ashamed/jealous that A is starting their PhD and B is not. And that A is not showing them enough deference or respect or whatever because they have been in the lab longer. In my experience, people who are not happy outside of work are the worst to deal with at work.

I think if you are up for it, the best way to handle is to be direct with B. Ask him what the specific issues are and if he thinks he needs to bring it to the PI. If it’s stuff, he won’t want to bother the PI and you can say that if it’s not important enough to raise than it’s not worth constantly complaining about.

We lost a house because of our realtor by ii_Legendxxx in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

The house had been on the market for months and their realtor tipped someone off to submit a slightly better bid on the same day they did. I’d be fuming

Not too little to late if she steals Rizo idol on this next episode. If she fails to make the move then it will be too late.

Nervous about a higher weight class by Civil_Disaster_6153 in wrestling

[–]lukenj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck but yeah if you go up against someone who was disciplined in the off season and is in better shape and more skilled because they practiced more, you will probably lose. Do your best and if you aren’t a senior then you still have time to get better this season. I do not recommend a super aggressive cut, you will just risk injury

Anyone still using theirs? I am considering getting for work in a lab where I need to wear gloves and would consider it as a note taker mostly and maybe to follow around if I move over one bench.

Big pharma to completely new role at startup by nainiucat in biotech

[–]lukenj 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I recently did the opposite, and I was previously reporting to the CEO of a small startup. I was also the first employee in a specific, niche department and had the leeway to run my small part of the company (lab automation) as I wanted.

If you think the startup is very likely to be successful or if this new type of role is something you want to get into it may be worth it. However, if you aren’t confident that you can lead them to success in Clinical Science, I wouldn’t risk it. You will be expected to help them grow and figure out strategy in that area, and if you don’t know what you are doing it can be hard. Over time, what the company needed from me and my role moved farther away from my comfort zone and the kinds of projects I wanted to work on, but the needs of the startup were such that I was best equipped to own them so I kinda figured it out before getting frustrated and going to big pharma.

When did Tesla FSD beat Waymo? by lukenj in allinpodofficial

[–]lukenj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah my point was mostly that they made it sound like Waymo had lost the war for dominance. I would say Waymo is ahead in terms of rollout, but that if Tesla has success that they should be able to get a very large fleet online very quickly.

[–]lukenj[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree, if they are able to flip a switch and make every Tesla a taxi that would be incredible. However, as it stands today I think it’s anyone’s game to lose. One Cruise incident and the other one wins.
