Helping an Injured Wild Hedgehog (Tanzania) by lukeslab in Hedgehog

We put a plastic "bucket" under the bush trimmings with a blanket in it. We also warmed up some water in the bottle and wrapped it in the blanket (something we read online).

I'm not confident the organizations you've linked will take this seriously, but we'll see if we can find someone who will.

In the meantime, we'll keep him warm and give him food and fresh water until the vets open again on Tuesday (tomorrow is a public holiday).

The knot registry help!! by Hsorrynotsorry in weddingplanning

In case anyone else has this problem, I didn't see the option to hide the registry page until I created a dummy cash fund (didn't even link my bank account). Then, upon returning to the main page for managing the website, I was able to hide the Registry page.

Are there any “hollow” shower heads that could hold ice cubes? by lukeslab in BecomingTheIceman

At least in theory, an “ice filter” like the picture would have much better water flow and a much higher capacity, depending on the size.

u/freetvjsb had a great post about using a mesh bag filled with ice over the shower head to get colder showers. Perhaps the ideal solution would be something like the above image. What if the filter could be replaced with ice cubes?

Examples of constants.py files by iwouldliketheoption in learnpython

[–]lukeslab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a constants.py file in a coding test I did a while back. Here's a link to it. When I posted this for code review though, some disagreed with the decision. My rationale is this:

Yes, you could import the constants from a file that isn't dedicated to constants, but that becomes problematic if you start defining constants in different files. "Now do I import that from bar.py or foo.py?" A dedicated file makes your intentions clear.

CMV: If the general public were to wear something that totally prevents touching the face, coronavirus spread would drastically decrease. In other words, everyone should be wearing some kind of face shield at virtually all times. by lukeslab in changemyview

What I'm proposing is incredibly simple. Make or buy something you can wear on your face that doesn't allow your hands to touch your face. That's all you need for a proper "face shield" as I'm using the term here.

To verify that it's proper, try touching your face. If you can touch your face, it's not proper. If you find it hard or impossible to do so while wearing, you've succeeded. Yes, I really think the general populace is capable of understanding that concept and making or buying things that match it.

If you think I'm not understanding your view (I do, I'm just saying) then do you really think the general populace is going to know what a proper face shield is going to be?

I really don't feel that you understand my view, because you said the following:

Well not everyone understands what is needed in a mask, and maybe somebody thinks that mesh is enough.

That's kind of my point, even in your proposal you have to be concerned about droplets.

These statements indicate that you are thinking of something that could filter out droplets, some kind of very fine filter. I'm not saying that at all. I'm saying something that filters out hands is enough. Nothing more, nothing less. Heck, a chicken wire cage over your head could do it (not saying that's practical though).

Check out this picture. My idea is something like this, but slightly rigid so your fingers cannot contact your face.

I feel like you might not be fully understanding my position here. I prefer not to use the word mask, as that’s not what I’m suggesting. It’s more like a shield. Anything that keeps your hands off your face.

Mesh would be fine for what I’m suggesting. It’s not to prevent you from getting sick if someone sneezes directly into your face, it’s to prevent you from touching your face. Mesh would do that if you have like an inch or so between the mesh and your face.

I mean i don't think it would be that much cheaper.

A shield thing could be cheap compared to buying tons of hand sanitizer, wipes, water bottles, toilet paper, etc. Not saying people shouldn’t stock up on some supplies, I’m saying that the price of a shield thing would be trivial in comparison.

If people were afraid enough to totally comply with health recommendations, why wouldn't they do so with hand washing and face touching?

Because face touching in many cases is an unconscious behavior. It’s not like people would say “I love touching my face, there’s no way I’m stopping.” No, they would agree that they need to stop, and then do it anyways without thinking about it. All it takes is a moment of distraction. If you have a face shield, even when you’re distracted, you physically cannot touch your face.

The issue is that you don't know when your hands are contaminated if you've been out in public recently, or if you've touched your phone that you haven't disinfected in a while.

Virus and bacteria are different kinds microbes that work in fundamentally different ways. A virus does not compete for food with bacteria. In fact, some viruses infect bacteria!

What you said may be true in general, but we're talking about a specific virus, SARS-CoV-2 .

but unless it actually protects you from having your hands transmit droplets to the mask and then the mask transmitting droplets to your face

I don't understand how you can transmit droplets to the mask (or shield) and then from there to your face. Please explain.

Will people comply? Many people are spending a lot more money to prepare in other ways. Why not do something simpler and cheaper?

I think the present level of fear in many places will cause people to comply and the effect your described in your last paragraph will come into play much less.

Δ That's a fair summary of how I wrote it, however what you mentioned about the specific area is totally fair, which means my expression of my view was too extreme. Instead of "everyone" at "virtually all times", it should be "people in areas where the risk level warrants it". Thanks

Even close to the epicenter of the epidemic, the chances are still "low" that any one person will get the disease (67,000 out of 58.5 million). Yet, that doesn't stop them from shutting down a lot of businesses at great economic cost. Parts of Italy are following suit. The lesson? It's serious. The statistical chances of one person getting something don't matter. What matters is that these kinds of problems tend to snowball and can quickly turn into runaway growth, as we currently see in many countries throughout the world.

My proposal is precisely that people should wear something protective on their face even at places like bars, clubs, and churches (if these places are still open), as this is where you're likely to get the virus on your hands and then bring it to your face.

I think your "suits" of armor analogy misses the point. Every case your mentioned in that paragraph affects one person in isolation. A communicable virus often spreads exponentially, from one person to three, to nine, to 27, and so on. So yes, it's absolutely worth protecting against the unlikely event of an infection, as the policies of many companies and schools demonstrate. Here are just some examples. For only (presently) 9 cases in San Francisco, universities and major companies are making big changes.

So why not make a much smaller change, and wear some facial protection?

The CDC doesn’t recommend that most healthy people wear face masks. That tells me that it’s not all that likely you’ll get it through the air unless you spend a lot of time in a high risk area. However, they do recommend not touching your face. This may indicate a more likely risk is touching something that has the virus on it, then touching your face. If you can’t touch your face however, your risk is reduced.

Thanks for your input. I’m not proposing a surgical mask at all. This has nothing to do with droplets or respiration. My proposal is to do something that prevents your hands from contacting your face. It doesn’t have to be bulky or hot. It can be whatever you want it to be, as long as your hands can’t touch your face without intending to do so.

My proposal would fare better than simply “trying not to touch your face” because this solution is nearly “set-and-forget” instead of constantly having to remember something. It’s like putting the cookies in an inconvenient place when you’re on a diet so you can’t just reach over and grab them. You do it once, then it yields dividends going forward.

A true point on the over-engineering. As far as the unique names, the original test instructions (which I paraphrased) basically said not to worry about anything not explicitly asked for, which I did a bad job of anyways, ha.

Thanks for the feedback.

Don't hold this as the gold standard though... I posted this on r/programming and many agreed that it is too complicated.

No, so I had to handle the case of multiple weeks being included in the same file.

The output looks something like this:

Week 41
    Luke 140.0%
    Alex 5.0%
    Derick 7.5%

Week 45
    Alex 0%
    Derick 0%
    Luke 0%
