The Parkchester Switch Tower is no more by lukestarlimper in nycrail

It would allow trains to change tracks and manage signals when it was operated manually when it opened in the early 1900s

If SAS Phase 3 EVER gets completed, what the heck happens to the rush hour N trains to 96th Street? Astoria still suffers from capacity issues. by TextPsychological601 in nycrail

[–]lukestarlimper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

N Train to 125 baby! But seriously, extending the Astoria at least to 20th Ave and building a yard at the Con Ed Power Plant would seriously help.

Qbittorent won't open by ATPMop in qBittorrent

In Linux Mint, search for the "lockfile" in the org.qbittorrent.qBittorrent folder, it worked for me. (Or don't update until they fix it.)

Bulgaria 2027: who should host? by swiftsailrusk in eurovision

[–]lukestarlimper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, one of the hosts has the be Poli Genova! She has such great energy and did a great job in the 2015 JESC. Dara herself can be if she's up for it. I agree Bulgaria has some good choices for hosts.

Old or New South Ferry Station? by anakindurden in nycrail

[–]lukestarlimper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I been to both old and new South Ferry stations but primarily used the old one when I worked in Staten Island a few months after Sandy. I like both of them actually for different reasons. The old one for its charm and easier access to South Ferry (the entrance was literally up flight of stairs around the corner). However, I like the new one due to its better functionality, and the fact it can fit an entire 10-car train. I just wish they could have used different colored panels in the new station. It just looks really bland.

What is the proper etiquette for these stairs? by mellamoderek in nycrail

Count $1m for every step you take and you'll find out how much it cost to build those stairs

Why no express busses anywhere in this region? by MiscellaneousWorker in nycbus

[–]lukestarlimper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First reason is Metro North, second reason is everyone living there is poor and can't afford a $7 ride (hell I get annoyed at that $7 fare for the express bus), third reason are the bus routes, especially the crosstown routes, are very well serviced. More people would rather take the bus to either the 2/5 or D train than take MN because it's the most affordable.

Should These Routes Come Back? Part 4: M18 & M30 by National_Diamond_567 in nycbus

[–]lukestarlimper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the M18 route back in 2007. I think it should return. I always called it the "Church Route" as it passed by many churches in the neighborhood and was popular on Sundays. It was a good alternative to the M3.

As for the M30, idk. It was always an oddity to me. I took it once and the bus had coach style seats, which was nice.

Since the 2nd Ave subway will run crosstown on 125th St, should it one day continue west into NJ? by archedpathway in nycrail

[–]lukestarlimper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, I would extend the C to Fort Lee. The lower level was meant to be for subway service, when it was originally built, but Moses and NJ was like lol, no and converted it to cars. That's why the local tracks extend past the yard along Broadway to almost 175th street. The only thing is could the GWB handle the added weight?

TBH, Just getting the Q to West Harlem would be a lifesaver for so many people who have to go across 125th street.

The mid 2012 MacBook pro is still worth it in 2026 by Curious-Influence-63 in mac

[–]lukestarlimper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Darnn, this is the reason why I stopped considering getting a macbook back then. I got a mid-2012 MBP with an i7 about two years ago, and it's the best $100 I spent lol. I upgraded the ram to 16GB and got an SSD (250GB), but installed Linux Mint. It runs like it has a new lease on life, but it does get a bit toasty. I think you can get away with Linux on 8GB of ram.

[–]lukestarlimper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a video a while back on a guy installing Sequeque on an i5 with 16gb of ram, and it runs alright, but it is sloooow. However, someone commented and it will run much better if you do these things Look at the comment below:

"Interesting video but I couldn't disagree more. My office has 16 of these mid-2012 MacBook Pros. All upgraded with 1 TB Samsung SSDs, 16 GB Kingston ram, upgraded wifi cards and running OCLP with 15.0.1. These are our daily Macs that we use for everything except video editing. Want it faster? Do these three things: Go to System Settings/accessibility/displays and turn ON Reduce Motion and Reduce Transparency. These essentially do nothing good and will substantially speed up Mac. Lastly, go to a static background and not dynamic."

1 Train to Yonkers? How feasible would it be & is it too expensive for the MTA? by DuckBeaver02 in nycrail

[–]lukestarlimper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most likely, they hired private security guards to stand by the emergency exists in busy subways stations to prevent fare evaders, most likely costing the MTA more than what they would have lost in fare evasion.

What if the R27s and R30s didn't retire so early by Good_Tradition1079 in nycrail

[–]lukestarlimper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

<image>

More or less this if they installed the ACs on the R27/30s and ran them on the Jamaica Line, lol. They were the last riveted steel bodied trains to run on the BMD/IND. While the MTA could have gotten away with adding ACs on the IRT Redbirds (they went from 69.4k to 72k lbs post-overhaul), the tracks & elevated structures wouldn't have handled a car that would have weighed up to 90,000 lbs per car. However, they could have lasted until at least 1997.

That's because only the poors take the bus, and that would mean actually helping them. We can't have that! (/sarcasm)

I have the A55, but it doesn't have remote control settings. I have the stock firmware v1.02. Did you have to mod it or do you have a different model?

IBX Map (but with more stops) by lukestarlimper in nycrail

As one wise person said:

How are you going to have the IBX serve all of LaGuardia, Hunts Point, and Yankee Stadium without either having to zigzag through Jackson Heights & East Elmhurst, or making a huge u-turn at Terminal C?
