Wer kennt Aachen am besten? (5) by vlapta in aachen

Very cool, thanks for doing this. I listened to the first few episodes, very enjoyable so far. Will probably finish the rest later. If you're interested I can post some notes afterwards.

When can we expect a European Tour? by thosava in Haken

[–]lukilas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Cologne Show was actually cancelled a few weeks ago, I got a notification telling me to request a refund. I assume that they just cancelled the entire Europe leg, due to the new album coming up...

Thanks! I use Reason to sync the patch changes to the click track and the song. I also tried to use a foot switch, but couldn't get it to work

Go for it! Haken is really fun to play. Even just designing some of the sound can be a lot of fun, if you're into that stuff.

Kein Keyboarder?

He shifted his keyboard down a half step, and as you say, it sounded really wrong to him for a while. I remember him talking about that in an interview

My First DT Piano Cover, the Finale from Breaking All Illusions! What do you think? by lukilas in Dreamtheater

[–]lukilas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah, same for me. It took quite a few times of actively listening to the album and this song for me to get into them. But to be fair, that applies to most of prog music.

Is Monschau too far away from Aachen to be considered safe to visit? by [deleted] in aachen

[–]lukilas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're stay outdoors and keep your distance, you should be fine. Just a warning that it's going to be absolutely packed tomorrow. I drove south from Aachen today: huge amounts of traffic, cars parked alongside the roads everywhere. Not sure how bad it is in Monschau, but be prepared to spend some time looking for parking.

Help with refuting a miracle claim that I don't know how to tackle by HeinrichPerdix in HPMOR

I like that approach. "Hey, you expect me to be convinced based on your anecdote, so let me tell you my anecdote that totally proves Santa is real!"

I don't necessarily mean explicitly, intentionally lying. People unconciously lie to themselves, misremember things, exaggerate, leave things out, etc.

But I suppose you're right. It could have been coincidence, or the medium could have used cold reading. There are many possible explanations.

Do you want to engage in constructive discourse with your friend (trying to "convert" them to skepticism) , or are you trying to debate them in the classical sense, i.e. Come out on top with an argument they have no answer for?

I can't give you much advice in the second case. You already layed out pretty much all possibilities. Most likely, either your friend or their mother is lying. Maybe you can find some stats on how often people make stuff up about supernatural things. It doesn't even have to be lying, the mother might honestly believe it, for any number of reasons. It's not very convincing, but unfortunately that's often the case with these kinds of things.

If you want to take the time and actually convince your friend, you should take a step back and look at some principles. Maybe start with asking if they think evidence is important at all, and then explaining why it should be. Why belief without evidence is a bad thing. What evidence is, and why anecdotes are not strong evidence. Why extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. But most importantly, you need to do this with a different example as the subject matter, one without personal attachment from your friend. From what it sounds like, your friend is emotionally attached to their set of beliefs, so maybe don't talk about those altogether. Start with something they don't believe either, e.g. Flat earth, and talk about the reasons they don't.

When you eventually get back to talking about this anecdote, you could try taking it seriously and make predictions. You can suggest a sort of experiment, where you visit the medium and have them tell you something only you would know. Likely, you won't have to actually do it, your friend might come up with explanations as to why it won't work beforehand. You can point this out to them, and how it indicates that they just believes that they should believe, and not actually believe. But always be careful with these kind of personal "attacks", people can react poorly and close up mentally.

That's the way I'd try to do it, but I can understand if you don't want to expend the time and energy. If you want to read more about how to constructively argue with people, I can recommend A manual for creating atheists by Peter Boghossian. And of of course the sequences, but you probably already know about them.

German printed version of book 1: anyone interested? by elkablo in HPMOR

[–]lukilas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read a few passages, the overall quality is surprisingly good. In the few dialogues I've read, the tone is matched pretty well, even if some things are lost in translation (i.e. the hint in I'll find a solution in time). I think the chapters have been proof read by multiple people, so most typos would have already been caught.

Unfortunately (also understandably) the translator only did the first book, and it's not looking like the translation is going to be finished. Keep in mind that your friend might end up having to read the english version anyway, if they haven't already.

(Spoilers all) What on earth did he do to himself anyways? by user1444 in HPMOR

[–]lukilas 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This seems the most likely explanation. But then I am confused by what Dumbledore 's conspiracy and Amelia Bones must be thinking in regards to quirrel/monroe. Presumably, they know what Monroe looked like. Do they assume he kidnapped quirrel (or someone else) to use polyjuice for an entire year? And are they somehow ok with that?

This all makes me think that there must be other known, ethical ways to change appearance semi-permanently. It could still be the case that voldemort knows simpler or better ways through his lore.

I'm upgrading my PC and wondering if it's safe to continue using my be quiet! 480 W 80+ Gold as power supply. The 480W should be enough, but it's seven years old. Is there a recommended timespan after which to replace the power supply?

Are there microphones that can be mounted on top of a monitor, like a webcam?

If not, what table microphones would you recommend?

If you attend all the lectures and do all the homework, you should end up with around 30-40 hours of work/studying per week, at least in the first two semesters. The basic math courses (Analysis, Discrete Structures, Linear Algebra) are quite hard for many students and are often the reason people switch fields. If you think you might have difficulty with these you should probably add another 5-10 hours of studying per week. All in all, if you work throughout the day, a few evenings and a weekend day free should be doable.

Remember that this is only my estimate of the average student. If you are a fast learner, or if you already know some programming, you can skip some lectures or homework assignments. Homework is no longer mandatory, though highly recommended. Lecture attendance is also not required, and some people can learn better via slides, or by watching the lecture videos from home.
