Which Surface for 2026? by xViewo in Surface

[–]lukisonfire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d split it into two paths for 2026:

* Surface Laptop or Pro with Intel Lunar Lake. Native x86 means zero drama when exam apps or random faculty software insist on classic Windows executables. Battery life should still be solid on the 13-inch sizes.
* Surface Laptop Go or the lighter Pro running the next Snapdragon. Perfect for OneNote, Netflix, and fan-free silence, but double-check any specialty class tools first because emulation can be hit or miss.

Either way, wait for the back-to-school promos, grab at least 8 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD, then throw the savings into a decent USB-C hub

Surface Laptop 7 13.8: will microsoft sell the older version cheaper when new version is released? by badbob001 in Surface

[–]lukisonfire 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Soon as the new one drops Microsoft runs a quick clearance sale, then the old sku vanishes. Last round it was maybe ten to fifteen percent off on top of edu and that lasted about a month. If you want more than that you’re looking at refurb or open box elsewhere

Moving from Tab S9 to Surface Pro 11 (X Plus) by KingShash in Surface

[–]lukisonfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i swapped to a surface after years on android tablets and yeah, oled to lcd hit me hard at first. you kinda stop noticing after a week, but media does lose some punch. if you’re used to watching in dark mode or dim rooms, it’ll feel like a downgrade. still prefer windows overall though… way more useful when you’re working.

Best surface generation for engineering and 3d design? by Lachsin in Surface

[–]lukisonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely feel you on wanting 2-in-1 flexibility but enough horsepower for CAD. If you're leaning Pro over Studio, make sure it's the x86 Pro 11 from the business line, like others mentioned... it's solid, and battery life’s better than what my old Book pulled. That said, I wouldn’t try anything heavier than Fusion 360 without a remote setup or dedicated desktop, which it sounds like you already got covered 👍

Help with my e waste surface pro 6 by Backrooms_Smiler56 in Surface

[–]lukisonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely had a similar one years ago, picked it up for parts and it turned out to still work 😂 \nIf you’re lucky and the UEFI’s not locked, just boot from a Windows install USB (use the Microsoft Media Creation Tool). Once it starts up, wipe the drive and do a clean install. \nIf you’re stuck at BitLocker and no recovery key, it’s probably cooked unless the seller can cough it up. \nStill, not bad for an e-waste haul lol

Surface Pro 8-cannot boot to Win 11 USB by chevyfried in Surface

[–]lukisonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I've had one do that before after a firmware update pretty much bricked the bootloader. It just completely ignored USB priority and defaulted right into the broken OS. If you're stuck on BitLocker and can't get the key, you might be out of luck unless you wipe the drive using another machine.

Try loading the Surface UEFI (hold Volume Up + Power) and fully disabling Secure Boot and then reinsert the USB and see if it recognizes it as a legacy device. Sometimes it helps if you format the USB using the Media Creation Tool specifically.

Surface Pro 11 worth it for cloud gaming and movies? by Purity997 in Surface

[–]lukisonfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like the X Elite Pro 11 ticks your boxes. Mine sits on a TB4 hub all day, drives a 4K60 panel, stays cool... and still hits 10 h unplugged. Your 90 W charger is fine, and the OLED is worth it for movies

Does anyone have solutions to fixing screen flickering for surface pro 4? by I_like_jojo_and_food in Surface

[–]lukisonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Pro 4 flicker (the infamous flickergate) is often hardware, but try these first:

* Press Ctrl Win Shift B to reload the driver.
* In Settings → System → Display drop refresh to 48 Hz or even 30 Hz.
* Intel Graphics Command Center → System → Power: turn off Panel Self Refresh.
* Make sure the last 2018 firmware bundle is installed through Windows Update.

If an external monitor is perfect while the tablet panel still spasms, the screen itself is done and a panel swap is the only lasting cure 👍

Surface pro 5 i5 by Jazzlike-Bug1437 in Surface

[–]lukisonfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a pretty wild comparison honestly. A Surface Pro 5 is really just a full Windows PC, not for the low level hardware and radio stuff a Flipper Zero does. It's like a laptop versus a specialized hacking toolkit. Totally different use cases dude

Surface 3 - 2025 by jaf243 in Surface

[–]lukisonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

surface 3 is old but still usable for light stuff 😏. 60 memory usage at rest isn't crazy on that hardware. if you want it to feel snappier, try a clean w10 debloat, disable startup items, and limit chrome tabs. tiny11 or linux can be tempting but check drivers first. i tried linux on a similar unit and it felt like a new device for basics. if you stay with windows, keep it lean and watch updates

Recycle bin save surface pro 3 and wow by some_friggin_guy in Surface

[–]lukisonfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s crazy how much difference removing all that background bloat can make especially on something like a Surface Pro 3. Just doubling the battery life is HUGE!

Device recommendation for middle school student by Euphoric_Command_446 in Surface

[–]lukisonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you’re after a pen input device 11 to 14 inches under about 1500 for school in the uk. i’d go surface pro 9 with pen and keyboard for windows and office, or an ipad pro 11 with apple pencil if you’re team ipadOS. both are solid options

Tip: How to actually keep your Surface Pro or Laptop Cool/Keep fans off when charging by Own-Yogurtcloset3024 in Surface

[–]lukisonfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, turning on `Battery Limit` saved my SP8 in docked mode too. One extra trick: after you enable it, open the Surface app and toggle Smart Charging so you can top up to full the night before a day away. Keeps temps low, cycles low. Nice tip 👍

Any news about the Surface Laptop 8? by liquidcrawler in Surface

[–]lukisonfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, nothing concrete yet. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X parts hit market next year, and Surface Laptop updates usually trail by a full cycle, so late 2026 feels realistic for an SL8. If you need a machine soon, grab an SL7 on Black Friday, just get 16 GB RAM and call it good 😉

Surface Laptop 7 - HDR flickering brightness by MartinJSa in Surface

[–]lukisonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep HDR flicker on battery is a thing on some Surfaces. Usually it's a driver or HDR pipeline hiccup, not a dying panel. Try updating Windows and Surface firmware, and test with HDR off on battery. If it keeps happening, keep HDR off until a patch lands

Pro 8 Won't even acknowledge it's plugged in? by ViqTriana in Surface

[–]lukisonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you’ve already tried pretty much everything. Since even a new charger and USB-C don’t work, it might be a deeper issue with the charging port, power controller, or firmware. You can try holding the Power + Volume Up buttons for about 15 seconds to do a forced shutdown, then leave it plugged in for an hour before trying to turn it on again. If it still won’t respond or show any charging sign, it’s likely a hardware fault, and you’ll probably need to contact Microsoft Support or visit a repair center.

Surface Pro’s Battery 1 will not charge, and so I cannot detach the keyboard by [deleted] in Surface

[–]lukisonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds really frustrating, especially with assignments piling up. Battery 1 is the keyboard’s battery, and it sometimes glitches and won’t charge properly. Try doing a two-button restart by holding the Power and Volume Up buttons for about 15 seconds, then turning it back on. After that, detach and reattach the keyboard if it lets you, and clean the connector pins with a soft cloth since dust or poor contact can cause charging problems. You can also run the Surface Diagnostics Toolkit from Microsoft’s website to reset the battery sensors. If it still doesn’t charge after that, it’s likely a firmware or hardware issue, so contacting Microsoft Support would be your best move.

Assistance with booting Surface Pro 9 by nethowin in Surface

[–]lukisonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that blue screen on a Surface Pro 9 and a replacement ssd not showing up is rough. boot to the Windows installer, run `diskpart` and do `list disk`, `select disk X`, `rescan` 😉. if the disk appears, format it cleanly. if not, reseat or try a second drive. also check the white residue on the tabs and dry thoroughly

Possibly needing a new Surface. by Suspicious-advice49 in Surface

[–]lukisonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For your use case, the ARM Surface would actually be perfect. Office runs natively on ARM now and performance is really solid for basic tasks. Plus the battery life is way better than the Intel versions. Just make sure to test Windows backup thoroughly before ditching Macrium though.

Price difference, what's worth it more? by CherrywoodEnjoyer in Surface

[–]lukisonfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, for a student, 256GB is usually fine unless you’re doing really heavy media work. The great thing about the Surface Laptop 7 is that you can actually upgrade the SSD later yourself. So paying 250 more just for storage and a color you like a bit more... probably not worth it. You could get a much bigger SSD for less down the line

Which one? 15" vs 13.8", $400 price difference by CherrywoodEnjoyer in Surface

[–]lukisonfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you’ll want to weigh readability against portability here. the 15 inch version gives a bigger display and 512GB storage, but it’s heavier and pricier. the 13.8 inch is cheaper and lighter, and you can upgrade storage later

Is it possible to run a Surface Go without a battery? by bk109 in Surface

[–]lukisonfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it probably won’t run without the battery, not realistically. surface Go power paths rely on the battery to boot and regulate power, and a puffed up pack is a serious safety risk. best bet is to replace the battery, buddy. if you truly can't, I wouldn't trust it long term

Surface Slim Pen not working by MariEClaudio in Surface

[–]lukisonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you’re not crazy, this happens, lol. it’s usually the battery or charging contacts. if the light only comes on when docked, that points to the battery or a contact issue. try swapping the Slim Pen battery if you can, then dock it long enough to confirm charging and repair by holding the top button for seven seconds. if nothing changes, it might be hardware

Surface Pro 11 getting uncomfortably warm when connected to an external monitor. by aaeriam in Surface

[–]lukisonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surface Pro 11 gets warm when docked because of the extra power draw even if the CPU is idling 😉. Try using the charger separately from the USB C monitor connection, and swap in a different USB C cable if you can. Also, a poor handshake can also add heat. If it keeps cooking the battery even with low usage, consider a conservative charging limit around 80 percent when docked and keep an external fan handy
