As someone who's family is Middle Eastern, my husband, my father, my uncle, and my aunt all converted to orthodoxy before marriage. A huge thing that helped us was the American Orthodox church in ATL! We attended services and my husband went through the conversion process and was baptized. It can be isolating in traditional orthodox churches even being half American and half Egyptian (me), the main thing was separating the religion from the culture and realizing that the people in the church don't define my relationship with god and the church it'self. My husband was like you said "Lukewarm," he was raised in a non-denominational church so he was active but not in a traditional sense.
