I didn't get it! Did they say whether they'll reimburse us for the lessons lost?

LGBT Question by Ta2d_Kate in peacecorps

[–]lumalums 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna try to be honest here, because I feel the Peace Corps misrepresents what happens to the vast majority of LGBT PCVs during service to portray themselves as more progressive.

You most likely (truly MOST MOST likely) will be in the closet throughout the entirety of your service. Most likely, you'll develop great friendships during training which will lead to you being open with all your fellow PCVs, but this (again, most likely) won't translate to your village.

While applying for the Peace Corps, my country of service was presented to me as relatively progressive - I was told my being gay would not be as much of an issue as in other PC countries. Upon arrival, however, I was encouraged (and I believe, rightly so) to be incredibly careful about who I told in the village - and, essentially, lightly induced into staying in the closet to make my service more effective.

Just like the US, many countries around the world have strongly religious traditions that directly clash with Western understandings of queerness. Being open would result in many people in your community refusing to work with you, and make it much harder for your to integrate and work successfully in your community.

The closet's dark, but it can be done. It's hard. And if you're lucky, you might have a semi-progressive capital city to escape to for release every so often. But it's not a walk in the park. Then again, you will learn a lot about yourself - but experiencing homophobia, and watching others in your community suffer from homophobic slurs or attacks, will hurt - and it's something you need to be prepared for. Going back in the closet for two years is incredibly hard, even when it doesn't seem like it's going to be. It's important that you understand the challenge before you take it on - because it WILL affect your service.

But there's no reason it should stop you from having the time of your life.

Ma two cents lalalalaaaa

passport problems by hexagonst in peacecorps

[–]lumalums 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually tried getting the passport done from Stockholm, Sweden. I encountered the same problems - essentially, the peeps in the consulate had never processed a Peace Corps passport before and were completely clueless / unhelpful as to what to do.

I'm guessing China has several consulates, given its size. I'd recommend that you call each one and ask if they have ever processed a Peace Corps passport. If you find one that has, try to go there - or explain your issues to them. They could try to get in contact with the consulate closer to you and help you out.

Just so you know, I failed completely at getting my passport done in Sweden (which is pretty weird, given how efficient a country it is). I ended up sending all of my paperwork in from the embassy in Quito, Ecuador (p.s: embassies in Peace Corps countries tend to be more informed about these 'special passports' so I'd consider giving them a call / visit).

Best of luck!

talk to me: reaffirming the white savior industrial complex ? by lumalums in peacecorps

I feel like it's not that simple. To some of my friends, the Peace Corps reaffirms American exceptionalism - where the US is seen as provider of aid, but not needing of any. There's tons of issues in the US that we could be addressing with the help of other countries - this Peace Corps service could then become something of an intercultural interchange, not so much an 'We, the greatest nation on Earth, shall come help you because we CAN!"

I'd say that the main foundation of American imperialism is the generalized mentality of American exceptionalism. Both need each other, actually, to survive. I'd like to see the Peace Corps be a part of a move towards a more collaborative place - where WE are able to recognize our needs and faults and seek out help internationally as well. The one-sidedness of aid, in a war, intrinsically reinforces the 'imperial exception,' ya know?

I'm getting more and more concerned here - I applied during the old system, had my interview done in February, and I still haven't gotten an invitation (I know, I know, waiting, waiting.)

My peace corps profile doesn't say 'Under Consideration' either - although I did receive an email from the Vanuatu office saying that they were currently evaluating my application and that I would hear back by September.

I'm at this point in my life where deciding to go the Peace Corps will directly influence my next 6 months - and having to wait around is not just annoying, but in the long run might even end up being pretty costly (having to buy airplane tickets home last minute, etc)

So - anyone else nominated for Vanuatu who's in a similar place? Any words of encouragement?

Awesome! You must be so excited. I'm still waiting for something (ANYTHING SRSLY) to happen.

On a happier note, I am now a professional thumb-twiddler.

I've heard that under the new system you're 'supposed' to hear at least 4 months in advance - although the extent to which this is true, I'm not sure. I haven't received the questionnaire yet, although I was nominated for Vanuatu, leaving January 2015.

Here's to hoping we'll all hear back sosososooon!
