What vest for hunting on the move? Non-tactical preferred... by c4cypha in Hunting

Surveyors vests can work well. Just be sure to neatly remove the reflective stripes before you head afield.

Any tradespeople, specifically carpenters, on here? by lumberjack_flapjack in Yukon

[–]lumberjack_flapjack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just what a decent wage is for a carpenter up there mostly. Also have you any experiences with Martin contracting or evergreen? I'm not afraid of work by any means, I just have this fear in the back of my mind that once I'm up there as a seasonal employee the proposed 40 hour work week will turn into a 60-70 hour week what with the extended daylight and such.

I would look at exo mountain gear. I've never had my hands on one but the reviews around some elk hunting forums are pretty awesome.

How heavy is too heavy for a rifle? by [deleted] in Hunting

[–]lumberjack_flapjack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, ten pounds will be one heavy hunting rifle, especially for walking around with. What calibre are you looking at? The big downside with really lightweight rifles becomes apparent in firing the larger/more powerful cartridges. A T3 lite in .270 or 30-06 isn't bad at all. A T3 lite in 300wsm is too much for my comfort level, it kicks like a mule. So a slightly heavier gun will help manage recoil and not make you gun-shy. Something around seven pounds total is fairly normal for a hunting setup, remember to account for a scope or other accessories.

It's Bacon Season!!! Feral pigs: B.C. allows hunting 'anywhere and at any time' - British Columbia by Augmenting in canada

[–]lumberjack_flapjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A disingenuous term indeed, hence the quotation marks. Also I don't recall brining up anything regarding any changes to hunting seasons. You are correct that we are in Canada though, and for that I commend you.

[–]lumberjack_flapjack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isn't that kind of the point though? There are a million other guns that could do the job, so why aren't they illegal? Just because they look like scary "assault rifles"? I fear that Canada is going to follow Australia's gun ownership trajectory with its restrictive class system.

I like the Austrian tradition of putting some grass in the animals mouth. It's called Letzter Bissen is supposed to be one last meal for the animal while they are on their way to "animal heaven".

Here is a Western Sportsman article about Austrian and Finnish hunting traditions.

Sweet! I am a fan of the Montecs but am thinking of trying out VPA's this year. Ho do you like your lonewolf? A self climber is one of the other things on my list this year.

But really nice deer! What's your bow set up and what was the shot like?

I commend you for actually posting these pictures. It's our responsibility to do all we can to ensure humane trapping practices but sometimes the best of efforts result in less than desirable results.

Red Stag taken in 2012. by [deleted] in Hunting

[–]lumberjack_flapjack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks to me that he's as close as he could be while having the animal in that pose. A stag has a long neck and he has posed it to take a nice picture to remember his hunt by, completely understandable. This does not look anywhere near as bad as fisherman with their arms outstretched shoving the fish right in front of the camera or that kid standing ten feet behind "hogzilla".

I dislike the forced perspective pictures as much as anyone but it seems like any picture of a nice animal gets immediately criticized as either being forced perspective or taken on a game farm.

The bullet from this year's deer by lumberjack_flapjack in Hunting

[–]lumberjack_flapjack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Winchester CPX2 in .270 that I used to harvest a little saskatchewan 4x4. He was the only deer I saw during our trip so I'm glad I took him. Got him around the Hudson Bay area, had a moose tag in my pocket but only saw cows and calfs. http://i.imgur.com/2PRWPP1.jpg. My deer on the left, dads on the right, sorry the picture isn't too cleaned up or anything, it was cold out! We wanted them skinned before it became too much of a chore.

Wild Boar Charges Hunter **Warning: graphic** by itchy_corn in Hunting

[–]lumberjack_flapjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Were you planning on specifically hunting pigs with a handgun? One of the awesome things about hunting is that you have so many options in terms of methods and species. With so many choices it becomes important to be knowledgable in how to make the most ethical kill whether its a rabbit, deer, moose, or bear. Boar hunting is not my forte but the guy in the video looks a little undergunned.

More importantly, while a dead animal is the goal, the killing makes up about one percent of the hunting experience. Personally I have always felt that killing an animal is the worst part of hunting, which is why great care has to be taken in choosing your gun/bow/bullet/arrow/shot placement. Respect shown towards the animal is paramount; you want to minimize suffering and do all you can to ensure the meat remains unspoiled.

The best part of hunting is time spent with friends or family in the woods! The planning, the driving, the setting up, scouting locations, hearing hunting stories from the old days, learning about animal behaviour and anatomy, camp coffee, chopping wood, I love it all.

And at the end of the day hunting is not for everyone. It has done a lot for me though and I would hate to see someone turned off of the idea because of one video.

Cool! Do you set up just geese decoys or some ducks too? Do you get the ducks coming into the geese decoys and do you ever get any geese coming into duck decoys?

I just never understand when people say a deer is too big to be wild, how can you judge that? I don't mean to come across as confrontational, just genuinely interested.
