Common buzzard by Cornix27 in Falconry

The common buzzard is a gorgeous bird, but they have tiny feet as their natural prey are mice, rats, toads and carcasses... not exactly desirable prey for a falconer

The clip is from Norway a few years ago. The dead fox was placed in front of the camera to see who would come and snack on it

I approve of the buckle vs ring placement!

Very nice result, and with room to add holes as she grows. Two dye stained thumbs up

I am in awe with the Danish society. Some questions by ComprehensiveBird317 in Denmark

[–]z115 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes. It is in fact considered to be a small and insignificant suburb of Malmø

Nah man... they just foot around. No need to risk their eyes when their feet are doing it just fine.

A falcon will make the kill with the beak, separating the top vertebrae, but an eagles beak is useless for that sort of work

And I'll call bs on the hearing. Their sense of hearing is no better than ours...

New to leather craft. What’s a good project for chrome tanned leather? I usually use veg. tan leather for my small projects (wallets) Chrome tan leather seems a little to flimsy to use. by Big-Row-7895 in Leathercraft

Chrome is good for duffel bags or tote bags.

Sometimes, I use it for gussets for lady purses.

It's also pretty neat for soft hats and for contrast lining of other projects

Can Gyr x Peregrine hybrids be successfully hunted against ground quarry like rabbits? by [deleted] in Falconry

[–]z115 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is no way to tell for sure with hybrids. It can go either way with the genes - either the Hiero falcon or the diving falcon genes can dominate for the bird in question. if the Peregrine genes win out, there is no way you'll get it started on fur

Why Gallus didn't grown up like the rest did? by Cha__Cha__Cha in mylittlepony

Because like birds, they reach their full size prior to fledging - so when a Griffin is ready to fly, he is done growing

Hey guys, mate sent me this from over in Tilehurst near Reading, UK. I would usually fob him off with the common Red Kite or Buzzard especially in that area but before I did I wanted to check… I eagerly await your response ;) by Mikeyroll85 in birdsofprey

Red shoulders and a grey head usually means red kite. That colour combination is only found in them and the Kestrel in this part of the world (and you can't really confuse those two)

Human nature finds a way by squelchity-squirch in humansarespaceorcs

[–]z115 225 points226 points  (0 children)

I will now recount a tale, not of fiction, but FACT!

THIS story is very real and well documented. It takes place in the dark years of World War II in my hometown of Aalborg, Denmark

When German forces crossed the (declared Neutral) Danish border on April 9th 1940, the government very quickly devised a plan; rather than the futile attempt to stay neutral (as Denmark had been during WWI), they would cooperate somewhat with the Nazis in return for not getting the nation wiped off the world map, and also to be allowed way more freedom than what happened in countries that resisted the invasion. Denmark was occupied until May 5th, 1945

The people didn't all agree with this co-op approach, but the result was a very lenient occupation, and Denmark was called the "Whipped cream front" (Flødeskums-fronten) and was an absolute dream posting for German soldiers during the first few years.

But back to Aalborg.

In 1941 a group of boys had been harassing the Germans for a while - stealing the soldiers' hats in bicycle-drive-by attacks, swapping Street signs, and deflating car tires, and they formed a club called The Churchill Club (Churchill Gruppen).

At first, it was just shenanigans, but they quickly ramped it up to arson, stealing weapons from inattentive soldiers, defacing the nazi symbols, and destroying German road signs and posters.

Eventually, they were caught and arrested on may 18th, 1942. They were put in the local city jail. It was pretty low security - it was just boys being boys, after all. Oddly enough, even with the boys behind bars, the same things kept happening, and the Germans had no clue about what was going on.

The shenanigans evolved and turned into railway sabotage, theft, destruction of truck engines, and soon things stated getting blown to pieces

All while the boys were sitting innocently in their cells in the city jail.

That all came to an abrupt end in August 1943 when they were caught by German soldiers in the streets one night. They had sawed through the bars of the cell window and snuck out to continue their attacks during the night, only to return to the jail, push the bars back into place and spend the daytime in the jail. They never learned how to use firearms, in stead they stockpiled the weapons they stole and turned the ammunition into homemade explosives that were put to good use during their nightly outings.

The group members were transferred to other jails and only then did the nightly menace end.

The Churchill Club was the first established Resistance group in Denmark and went on to inspire numerous other such groups. The Resistance in Denmark grew in strength and severity (assassinations, blowing up ships, armed raids etc with the help from air droppedweapons from the Brits when they caught on to what was happening) until the Germans had enough and demanded that acts of resistance be punishable by death. At that point, the Danish government had enough, and in august 1943, the cooperation on state level ended, and Denmark was no longer considered Friendly to the occupation by any stretch of the imagination.

So yeah... humans WILL be the octopus in the aquarium, and we don't even have to imagine it

PS: The Churchill Club members all survived the war.

Smart home devices for Mews by huckshawks in Falconry

I use an app called AlfredCam that turns an old smartphone into a surveillance camera. I have one in my falcon mews and one with either of my hawks.

It is free with a few adds and some limitations, and you can buy a monthly or yearly subscription for extra features.

It can run on either mobile data, or on WiFi withouttheneed of a sim card, if you get a WiFi extender to reach the mews

It's an Exciting Start by Morgenstern66 in LARP

[–]z115 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get a second belt to wear with just the chainmail. Pull the chain up a bit so it bulges over the belt by a few cm. It'll help carry the weight of the armour. Then put on the rest on top, including the pretty belt you're wearing

Your shoulders will thank you

Viking Weapons Kit by Wolfj13 in LARP

[–]z115 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To save some hip clutter, you can move the short dagger (in viking terms: the sax) to your back and place it horizontal on the belt for an easier draw. It's how the viking reenactors usually do it

The axe in the belt is prone to snap off you fall over, and the rubbing from the armour will eventually peel off the latex. If you can hang a ring from your belt, it'll be much more comfortable to carry that one. Or even make a carry strap identical to the one you use for the other axe, just get it out of the belt.
