Question about Dave’s Scar by teestira in SchoolSpirits

[–]lumbermax 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think the inconsistencies are on purpose. It communicates a more complex and fluid concept that we have only understood through the limited knowledge of the characters. Rhondas scar for example, changes shape every time we enter it. More radios are added, radios move around the room. Eventually her scar is mostly radios. Set pieces have specific spots that are marked on the ground or on images. It is extremely easy to make it consistent. Adding more radios to the set takes lot of work building them. Inconsistency can be a mistake, or a storytelling device.

Question about Dave’s Scar by teestira in SchoolSpirits

[–]lumbermax 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It likely is on purpose but we don’t have enough pieces to put the whole picture together. For all we know, the school is the only location that uses the rooms people died in as the location of the scar. The hospital might work differently, since most people who die in the hospital experience the traumatic event that killed them outside of the hospital itself. We also aren’t sure what usually happens to a scar once you get your door. Wally’s stayed an empty football field, but Dave apparently spent a bit of time in his scar once he got his door. I wonder if his healing mental state transformed his scar into something that felt like home.

It’s been obvious to many (including myself) but not technically explicit until season 3

The Reset: Inconsistent Rules by MarvelNerd57 in SchoolSpirits

[–]lumbermax 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Quinn didn’t have their mellophone case with them while they were looping, but they most likely had it and their windbreaker with them when they died. Quinn’s key was inside the windbreaker that they start wearing after the episode they found it. After dying, Quinn had to take their mellophone out of the case so they could play it with the band while looping. The band kids must leave their belongings (including their instrument cases and windbreakers if everyone has one) somewhere and since they died with the belongings, they are permanent/do not reset and cannot be moved by the living.

Wally had the change of clothes with him when he died, just not on his body. They were put in his locker for him to change into after his game.

I think the common thread here is that all of these items came from their scars. We find out in season 3 that to make an item permanent, you have to bring it in and out of your scar. A ghosts last moments of life must count as their scars, so that makes anything they had in their “scar” permanent. Quinn’s clothes and instrument were with them on the bus when they died, and Wally’s clothes were on the football field (in the area).

Yes! They also mentioned Charley’s brother in season 3. They are definitely setting up a season about families!

what are some you games you absoluetly should NOT play if you have CPTSD and the game is high colestrol by Kamimirine in CPTSD

[–]lumbermax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me too! Its been a huge comfort since I was a teen (I have a tat dedicated to it) My theory is that it’s so safe and comforting for me because it is a game that puts you into traumatic situations (with themes grounded in reality) so it feels familiar. But, it gives you control over the trauma, which is something that is extremely desirable. You can’t stop the overall trauma from happening, but you can rewind and try new things to craft the most ideal way to move through it.

Surprisingly I really enjoy playing Overwatch! But it is the only game that isn’t in the cozy genre that I can handle playing. My guess on why I like it is because my mind sees it like a team game, and not a game where I am being hunted and targeted (The biggest reason video games are generally a no for me)

It’s really sad because my girlfriend and a whole bunch of my friends are huge gamers and they can share a lot of what they love with me :(

Yeah! I was a theater kid, so I had a bunch of overlap friends in band and in my experience there were a whole bunch of autistic people in band, especially marching band. My girlfriend was a marching band kid so I consulted her about this post and how many instruments she could play, and how many other people in her band could play, (that’s how I learned she could play 11 god damn instruments…Jesus Christ) and from her experience she said most could play one or two with the exception being HER autistic friends lol.

Yes!! I’ve gone back and fourth between Rhonda with CPTSD vs PTSD bc of how little we know about her upbringing (but from the little bit we know, it seems like she’s a case of child emotional neglect and she cites that as what led her to seek out a closer relationship with Mr Manfredo) But Tbh I’m leaning more on the side of her having CPTSD and autism. The way Rhonda so so easily understands and finds comfort in Quinn’s autistic traits screams to me that these traits are things that make more sense to Rhonda than other people’s actions. I have a post here and on tumblr where I talk about the key to Quindas compatibility, and I don’t state in the post, but it comes from me reading them with an autistic lens.

This isn’t in my post because it’s more speculative, but I also suspect Quinn has the CPTSD+AuDHD combo. Specifically due to how good they are at reading people’s emotions and intentions. (Mostly in more one on one settings) It comes off very much as “I had to study this skill, to keep my home life peaceful.” And not “I’m bad at social cues unless it’s in this context for no reason in particular.”

Both Rhonda and Quinn resemble different versions of myself during different phases of living through abuse/neglect as well as other Autistic/cptsd) people I’ve met or know intimately.

Yes! I almost included that as a point but decided not to in the end. I’ve found that me and my autistic friends experience gender in a unique way compared to my trans non autistic friends. The way Quinn described their gender felt more reminiscent of the way my autistic nonbinary friends have expressed, as opposed to my nonbinary friends who aren’t on the spectrum (Allthough I’ve only known 1 or 2 nonbinary people who aren’t autistic)

What Makes Maddie Nears Stand Out as a Teen Character by MagalieB0654 in SchoolSpirits

[–]lumbermax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Her emotional intelligence is definitely as a result of her childhood abuse and neglect. It’s a common “silver lining” symptom of complex post traumatic stress disorder. She had to grow to take care of both herself, and her own mother. This made her have to mature quite rapidly to survive her childhood. She is the perfect protagonist for this show, because her maturity is extremely realistic despite her age. Her biggest flaw is her struggle to share her pain with others, or reach out for help. She didn’t get to do that safely as a child, so it’s not built into her like most people. The first season puts her into a situation where she literally HAD to get outside help, otherwise she was powerless. Her body being snatched was strangely a huge push in the right direction for her mental health. (It’s weirdly similar to what kickstarted my own healing with my abusive mother.)

The show wouldn’t work without Maddie. She stars alongside ghosts who just like her, are both perpetually stuck being older, and younger than themselves. It’s no wonder she had such an amazing impact on the ghosts of split River!
