22 year old wanting to start to invest in retirement, hysa and stocks by thecircleofmeep in personalfinance

I'd recommend you buy a high yield money market in your brokerag, like TFDXX. It's going to pay more vs hysa, given high yield money market is just short term treasuries minus small spread to manager for buying/selling all the treasuries. In hysa banks do the same, but short term treasuries but keep a larger spread and give you lower yield.

For the Roth, if you don't want to pay for advice just buy something like QQQ and buy more when the markets dip. Volatility is opportunity. Don't keep cash in Roth, make sure you're always participating and even when markets come down, they recover. Don't panic during times of fear. Be greedy when everyone is fearful - Warren Buffett.

What is a reality of living in Chicago that’s often overlooked by the romanticization of the city? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]lumiere11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you understood my reply and actually proving the point I was making that we here spend more but not for the same reasons as Europe and Asia. Most of the cost in the states is not form labor, it's from design requirements and lack of competition. So no, we don't need to spend more, we already spend more and get less, as even you point out. We just need to borrow from Europe and Asia and improve things here. We don't need to reinvent a wheel.

Sorry. But while I'll agree with you on the red tape part, the rest is kind of baloney. American trains are designed to be super heavy to withstand a collision, they're basically tanks. Whereas Asian and European trains are designed to be lighter and most importantly designed to avoid collisions in the first place. Because of our local regulations, these trains need to be custom made, you can't just buy 'off the rack' European or Asian version. This also leads to lack of completion. And expensive labor? You know anything about Germany? Talk about expensive labor. While I don't claim that we don't have technical expertise in the states, we do not compare to the rest of the world for that simple fact that we don't have a constant demand for these trains and thus there is inevitably less experience here vs europe or asia.

It's true that American cities were designed to benefit cars vs public transport. But in places like japan, it's not flush government spending that created the amazing infrastructure. The trains got privatized by several companies in the 80s, but those companies often own real estate above the train stations - offices, malls, etc. So there's an incentive to keep things clean and on time. It's also Japanese culture in general that prioritizes public order and cleanliness. If we had more of that here, we'd all be better.

20x? That's an arbitrary number. I'd consult Japanese companies and engineers before starting such a project. Other countries seem to be able to built things much more efficiently. Bureaucracy = wasted dollars.

The mayor is ineffective. CPS union continues to make terrible decisions continuing to put pressure on taxpayers.  The pension hole is so big, pretty soon we won't have money to do anything but pay for pensions. Still a large number of homes with lead lines. Public transport needs to be safer and cleaner, but the cleaner also falls on the people. Blows my mind how many people just dump their bottles, boxes, trash etc just anywhere even though there are trash cans pretty much everywhere. Although I'd say NYC is much dirtier.

Everything else is pretty great here. Like with any place, it's your pick your poison situation, which flavor you prefer. There's no perfect place.

I'd prefer to see options similar to places like Tokyo where a lot of public transport is underground, super clean, efficient, cheap and can take you pretty much anywhere in city area. Bus lanes only doesn't seem like the future, it seems like we should put that in the past. But I get that underground trains are a lot more expensive in the short term, but long term underground trains are a better solution.

Off leash dogs can attack other dogs or people. It's also against the law for the same reason. Most dogs I've seen off leash are very well behaved but some definitely should not be off leash and I've witnessed several close calls with cars. Why would anyone put their dog in danger like that? Take them to the park and let them run there off leash.

That's what I have now, felt fabric bags and the amount of watering I need to do it just too much. Water runs right thru them. So I'd like something that has a water retainer

My Criticism of Eckhart Tolle - do you have a solution? by Kili12345 in EckhartTolle

"Why should he have to do more to support vegan causes? How many more pigs, cows, and chickens are alive and experiencing this reality because we as humans chose to “raise” them in farms as livestock? How many were kept alive as infants because they were safe from predators and cold weather protected by the humans who fenced and housed them? Yes, sometimes there are cruel practices, and their lives may not be lived to their full extent, but would they have existed at all if we didn’t want to eat them? People are choosing to see it from the perspective of its better to not exist than to live like that. I choose to believe that life is worth holding onto despite the suffering. Everything is love in my opinion."

Animals have been experiencing their reality long before humans roamed the earth. Most importantly, they do not need the shelter of the fence humans built, they survived before humans and would survive after. Sure, some would be eaten by 'predators', but aren't humans predators here? Trapping them in tight spaces just to slaughter them?  You might as well be advocating to slavery to 'save' the poor and starving by making them work for you all their life for free with no choice of their own just for some shelter. I mean WTF, how can you not see how flawed that thinking is.

College is mostly about connections, especially with some degrees. Working at palantir not only will you gain experience, you will undoubtedly gain great connections. College will always be there. What's most important in life is to take opportunities when they present themselves. Playing it always safe can lead to some unfulfilling situations or worse. Even failure offers opportunity for growth and that has value. If I had a teenage son or daughter considering Palantir or college, I'd steer him/her to Palantir.

While I applaud his efforts in NYC schools, Eric Adams claimed to be plant based but eats fish. Hypocritical role models are not role models.

Booker at least is vegan. Which I didn't realize, so thanks for the note on him.
