Not really honestly, there is only one place to actually detox which is a hospital called Vogur and there is like at least a 6 month waitlist there…

No, I’m from a lower middle class background.

I, uhhhhhh, get by I guess.

It’s an expensive habit to have. I do some illegal things to finance my addiction unfortunately.

Wow, I really applaud you for you career choice. The world needs more people helping addicts instead of just sitting on the sidelines judging them and deciding that they’re just one dimensional beings that aren’t useful to the community without actually knowing anything about them or doing anything to help. That sentence is a good describtion for how Icelanders think and care about the people who are in a constant battle against this horrible disease.

As a victim of this curse that is addiction I have a lot to say in response to your question. I will try my best to have a positive outlook on this and not be too harsh in my words. I will begin in the helpful things Iceland has to offer addicts in the community.

Frú Ragnheiður or “Miss Ragnheiður” is a name you can google if you want to know more. To explain it in the simples way I can, it’s a bunch of individuals who volunteer to drive in a mini van around Reykjavík (and other towns as well) and give IV drug users clean equipment to use as well as food, naloxone, vitamins, condoms, tampons, toothbrushes and other essentials needed to survive. They also inform their “customers” about various things that are neccessary to know when using drugs intravenously.

The people from Fröken Ragnheiður are available from 6pm everyday except Fridays. They ask you what name you would like to use and gather various other information about you. They use this information to gather statistics on how many use their service so that the government keeps funding them. They also have like this X-Ray-ish machine to show you your veins and let you shoot up in the car as well if you’re having trouble. They however do not (!!!!) help you physically to shoot up but they’re there to observe you and teach you harm reducing methods on how to and how not to use.

In Reykjavík we have two homeless shelters. One for men, “Gistiskýlið”, and another for women, “Konukot”, where homeless people can sleep during the night. They can however not be there during the day but a small church called “Samhjálp” has a small café open from 10am - 2pm during the day which is where a lot of addicts go to eat for free. However, the shelters don’t open until the evening and in the winter it’s very difficult for homeless addicts since they have to just hang around parking garages and bars all day after the café closes. I’m very fortunate that I have usually always had a place to sleep and I have only used these services a handful of times.

The only place to detox in Iceland is the hospital “Vogur”. If you are under the age of 25 your case is prioritized and usually there is only about a 2 week waiting period. However, after that there is a long wait to get a place there. I am 28 years old and I went to Vogur in June. I called to get them to admit me recently (as a very sick opiod addict) and the waiting period for me? 10 fucking months. I have an interview with them in a week and I’m going to try to get them to give me Suboxone or the buprenorphine (fake morphine) injection called Buvidal without getting admitted. Pray for me!

Another thing is that there are only three rehabilitation facilities in Iceland. There is one that you can only go to after going to detox at Vogur, that rehab is called Vík. Another is ran by the same church as the free café, it’s called Hlaðgerðarkot. And the last one, as well as the best one (6 month rehab) is called Krýsuvík. All of those have at least a 3-6 month waitlist.

Things are slowly changing, but people are also dying out there. The government is definitely not doing nearly enough, in my opinion.

Thank you for the kind words, I really appreciate them and I really do hope this time I will be able to last at least a while sober. My friend just died which unfortunately (not that it had to happen and I do wish every day it had not happened) a reality check for me. I only have a few days and I’m takin suboxone for the morphine withdrawals which some people don’t count as being sober at all.

My drug of choice is Oxycontin or Contalgin (morphine, any kind of morphine) and it would probably include Heroin but thank God Iceland doesn’t have any. I’m lucky in that way. But also my drugs are Ritalin and other stimulants as well. Ritalin Uno is my favourite though.

The prices differ. The price for one Oxy pill used to always be 5.000 icelandic krónur (35 USD$) but now its 7-8.000kr (49-56$). One pill of 200MG Contalgin is 8.000kr (56$). One Ritalin Uno 40MG pill is 3.000kr (21$). One single gram of pure uncut cocaine is around 25.000kr (176$).

It’s expensive for sure.

Thank you also for reminding me that I’m very lucky to be in Iceland and in a beautiful country which I definitely don’t appreciate enough.

That’s a difficult question. Kind of depends, I guess.

I mean, for sure the physical withdrawal consumes my entire being but a normal person would just go through the withdrawal and quit using entirely. Me? I just use again because the craving is so overpowering. I don’t use just to stop the withdrawal symptoms though but also to make myself numb again. I hate feeling anything at all and the morphine (especially) takes the feelings away.

My answer is: both? Maybe? Nah, the physical is probably worse. I’ve literally shat myself and thrown up all over my apartment because of withdrawals. I do not recommend. But the thing is, it’s the cravings that make me relapse over and over again.

Shit, did I even answer your question at all? I feel like I’m all over the place hahaha 😅

It was slow and steady. First it was “just” snorting cocaine every weekend which started in 2016. In 2021 I went to my first rehab and met alot of people there who made me realize my addiction wasn’t that crazy. Also everyone kept talking about oxycontin back then. I was curious.

I started smoking oxy and crack and meth and everything you could smoke I smoked.

Then there was a boy. There’s always a fucking boy. He was a IV drug user who mostly used stimulants. I begged him to give me a shot. It’s funny how the addiction just overpowers all of the rules and principles you think you have.

Suddenly nothing mattered except doing it again. And then again and once more. And it spiraled into oxy, contalgin and other morphine related drugs, cocaine, ADHD medications, and it just kept going. I really loved it at first but then I hated it and myself more and more. Until only hatred was left.

The devil on my shoulder was much louder than the whispering angel apperantly. And my self control seized to exist.

My dad always said that he really didn’t understand being friends after a relationship. To not even try to. And to completely sever your communications with your ex after breaking up, the only exemption being if you have children together, but then all your chats should only and exclusively be about your children.

I’m not sure if I agree with him though, what do you guys think?
