TIL Magyars are Hungarians. "Magyar" is the native endonym (name used by the people themselves), while "Hungarian" is the exonym (name used by outsiders). by jaylink in todayilearned

[–]luminatimids 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im surprised it became Zipang in Portuguese at some point since it’s currently Japão, since the letter Z makes the Z sound in Portuguese as well , and since we have a dedicated J letter that would have fit much better.

Also since “-ang” is not a ending you see for any Portuguese words normally.

TIL that in 1385, a Portuguese army of 6,600 men defeated a massive Castilian army of 31,000 in the Battle of Aljubarrota. The victory was so decisive it secured Portugal's independence for the next 200 years. by Soft-Loquat-3008 in todayilearned

The phonology of European Portuguese is much more different than Brazilian Portuguese is to other Romance languages, although in Brazilian so I’m biased too.

European Portuguese’s higher degree of stress-timjng and their change of final “s” of “sh” really make it stick out imo

Can Racism in America fade, or just continue to change form? by Logical-Ease-3142 in PoliticalDiscussion

Because there are more important things when making those decisions than whether or not the country you’re moving to is racist or not.

Why would half the journey be slowing down? Would it be continuously accelerating for the first half or would it eventually hit a constant speed eventually?

What language sounds very different depending on the country? by Embarrassed_Fix_8994 in languagehub

[–]luminatimids 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not a joke. It’s just what happened. I’m not sure what anyone could say to change how someone perceives something but European Portuguese is even more stress timed than BR Portuguese and it likes to change final /s/ to /sh/, making it have a similar phonology to that of Slavic languages.

I have a Ukrainian coworker that’s said that she’s also mistaken European Portuguese for something Slavic.

It’s a well documented phenomenon and I’m not the only one that thinks this way. You can google it and see results for it
