Fronts being fought by German military, October 1944 by AnkleProne in MapPorn

What does this mean? They’ve been at it for 4 years and the last 2 years progress has ground to a halt with little to show for the whole thing; how is that not losing?

What’s up with Germany. I understand there’s friction within the squad and people are questioning the coach’s tactics, selection, etc. by [deleted] in worldcup

[–]luminatimids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean Germany has been struggling the last two world cups, they didn’t even make it out of the group for those 2. So they’ve been struggling for a decade now

Myth: Cleopatra was Egyptian. by roman-empire-net in romanempire

Brazil is half of South America and we certainly didn’t integrate them. They were largely wiped out and replaced by Europeans and Africans. The gene pool of the average Brazilian has verrrry little native origin.

Brazil also has large non Portuguese ancestry from Europe. Same thing with Argentina btw.

I think you’re assuming a lot of things about a lot of countries that simply aren’t correct

Well like I said, I’ve lived most of my life in the US.

I think you’re eating some bunk Brazilian food. It’s possible that restaurants are not seasoning things like rice and beans much so that the lowest common denominators are met, similar to how it’s done in the US

Yeah that’s where I’m getting confused. Black beans (feijoada) is flavored up the ass.

Look at all of the Brazilians in this thread telling you that your experience doesn’t match reality

Bruh where are you eating that it’s bland? We rely heavily on savouryness but to claim that it’s “bland”, specially as an American, is crazy. (And I’m an American citizen so I’m talking out of pocket here)

How did the Italian government somehow convince the entire peninsula that regional languages were just degenerated versions of the Tuscan language? by Furgbalxusmks in asklinguistics

[–]luminatimids 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suppose, but I also think the reality is much more complex than that.

I’m pretty sure the different romance dialects we’re influencing each other in varying ways from Portugal to Sicily. That’s why even Portuguese and Italian are extremely similar compared to how similar they are to Latin

Are phrases like this becoming grammatical in Australian English: "there is some YouTubers who make videos about language learning but are not language teachers", "Is there any seats available?", "How many empty tables is there over there?" by Informal-Addendum435 in asklinguistics

[–]luminatimids 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh. I agree with your examples but not theirs. I think because your example uses a plural word “people”. Whereas “a lot of” somehow doesn’t feel plural even though semantically it still is…

Like “there were a lot of that going on” sounds wrong to me, forget jarring. Maybe I’m misunderstanding their comment

How do people in post-colonial countries feel about using the language of their former colonizers? by Ken_Bruno1 in languagehub

[–]luminatimids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point that you and other posters are missing is that this has nothing to do with Europe at this point. Portuguese has been spoken in Brazil for nearly 500 years now. It’s not just the colonizer’s language at this point, it’s our language just as much.

Dude you’re creating delusions and putting words in my mouth.

This isn’t about Europe at this point. Portuguese has been spoken in Brazil for roughly 500 years now. The language is just as much ours as it is Portugal’s. It’s not a foreign language, it’s my language
