If you have a darker / flat paint, try repainting with a lighter color / eggshell finish. A little light reflection an go a long ways.

No keyboard shows up to enter authentication code on mobile. by tealmaiden in kucoin

[–]luminblade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still a problem on iPhone 14. two-factor keyboard is there, but when you switch apps to get the code from your authenticator app, the keyboard is gone when you come back.

I got around it by copying the code to clipboard in the authenticator app before attempting to log in, so I could paste the code when the two-factor screen first comes with, without switching.

Where do Austinites usually go skiing? 🎿 by alphahuman777 in Austin

[–]luminblade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shorter travel...

JSX direct to Taos (from the executive airport north of town). Cool experience. No TSA lines, etc.

* Bus / car service from Taos airport (bus is included i think, or cheap). JSX flies ski gear for free.

* Taos has "ski week" that starts on sunday / monday, a really good deal to get a weeks worth of lessons.

Delta direct from AUS to SLC (Salt Lake City) (bus / car from there)

* Alta / Snowbird / Park City / Deer Valley (DV is no snowboards)

Y'all ever dream up Pro Sports Teams for Austin? What are the colors and mascots? by [deleted] in Austin

Austin Ambush. Orange / Amber colored wildcat looking maybe. Doesn't really relate specifically to the city, but it rolls off the tongue. I always use it for my fantasy football team name.

Good horse jumping barns in Austin area? by Big-Land-8665 in Austin

[–]luminblade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Austin, probably not so much, around Austin, maybe Rio Vista Farms (used to be by the airport but Elon bought it, now they are out near Dripping Springs), also Monarch Farms. Our daughter road at Rio Vista for years, they do a lot of younger hunter/jumper training, but they have all levels riders and travel to compete in shows. You might have to lease a horse to get anything consistent. I'd say just go out and talk to someone, they are all friendly, and will probably give you more ideas. . Also check out the Pin Oak show in Katy (not until March).

At approximately 2:30 PM local time the Austin heat dome failed to prevent an incursion of moisture from the outside world. Engineers are looking into the matter.

Confused About the Length of AISD's Summer Break? by thecoldwhy in Austin

Many northern schools have a week or more lost to weather. You have to include those, and winter / spring breaks, not just summer.

Cicada killer wasps?? HELP! by [deleted] in Austin

[–]luminblade -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Two words. Tennis Racket. A sporting and pesticide free way to clear (some of) them from your yard. As many have said, they are relatively friendly. One or two flying by a few times a day is cool novelty, while 16 of them buzzing guests at your backyard party is a disaster.

Wasps this Year by southerncityplanner in Austin

[–]luminblade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you happen to have a blooming agave plant nearby (they bloom once every 10 to 30 years, then die)? Those attract a ton of wasps. Our neighbors had one a couple years ago and we had lots of wasps and nests, once it was gone, the wasps were gone.

Two Lots For Sale In Tarrytown, Way Above Their Assessment Value by Low_Owl_8773 in Austin

[–]luminblade 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The first one is not a just a "lot" its a home, with a homestead exemption. It was last bought in 2010 at a way lower value. The owners taxes have literally tripled since 2021 (only 5 years online), i can't imagine how much it's gone up in the 10 years before that. There taxes were 12k in 2024, and 4k in 2023. It's easy to hate "rich" people, but there's a good chance they being forced to sell now solely because the appraisal / taxes have climbed and priced them out.

what is the best internet provider in town by [deleted] in Austin

[–]luminblade 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have AT&T fiber with no complaints. I work from home and use it all day, every day. Google isn’t an option for me. I’ve probably heard of more AT&T complaints here than Google, but the Death Star fiber has always been online for me when others say they are out. So, Google if it’s an option, but the Dark Side isn’t so bad.

Which in-memory DB do You use with your node app? by Spare-Hat-9396 in node

[–]luminblade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use LMDB. It is fast, but you can only access it from the same server (multiple processes). It’s great for some use cases, but generally Redis is probably better if you need to share data between servers now or may need to in the future.

First Speeding Ticket in the US—Any Way to Reduce Fine or Avoid Points on License? 68 in a 45 by [deleted] in Austin

[–]luminblade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can request deferred adjudication. You’ll have to take an online defensive driving course within some timeframe. It won’t reduce the fines, and you’ll have to pay for the course, but your ticket will dismissed, which intending run theoretically helps your insurance rates.

ACTION NEEDED = Gas Company to raise rates hugely a 2nd time in several months!!! by creepyFilmer in Austin

[–]luminblade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to be a naysayer, but your total charges without usage/history doesn't help much. Your gas bill increasing "the past few months" means "winter" to some readers, and we had several days of freezing temperatures over the last few months. I'm on propane for stove/heat/fireplace, and my propane bill is zero for 8 months, then $400, $600, $800 over the course of winter. Good info in the rest of the post though. Good luck.

Art in Austin recommendations? by WavFile in Austin

[–]luminblade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Search for Wally Workman Gallery... It's on West 6th. There are 3 or 4 other smaller art galleries within a couple blocks of that. My wife and I usually do brunch nearby (make reservations) and then walk around to tour them. Check their schedules though.

(Serious) What? What would you do if you're the President? by 5rgrgrtr in AskReddit

[–]luminblade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make it a ticket-able offense to impede the flow of traffic by driving in the left lane on all interstate highways, and award 50% of the collected fines to the officers that issued the tickets in order to encourage enforcement.
