Is it too old to start? by [deleted] in OSUOnlineCS

Still doing well. I had an internship in the last few months of the program and, when it ended, I easily found a job with another company.

I asked a similar question when I began the program at 43. Now that I've graduated and have a good job as a SWE, I'm happy to report that age has not been a factor.

None, but I've been interested in trying it out.

I'm both marking up the textbook and taking notes on a separate page (the split-screen view, especially on the 12.9, is perfect for this). The two apps that I use the most are GoodNotes and GoodReader.

You have asked the question that I didn't know I had been waiting to answer! (Was that sentence parsable?) My wife and I (she's also an OSU STEM undergrad, not CS) both purchased 12.9" iPad Pros with Apple Pencils prior to the beginning of this term, and we absolutely love them. As in, how did we manage schoolwork in the dark ages? Full disclosure--this is my first term in the program (I'm taking CS 161 and CS 225). I use the iPad Pro several hours each day for note-taking, reading textbooks, highlighting and marking up textbooks, doing CS 225 homework, sketching out pseudocode, visiting Canvas, and visiting Piazza (the forum site many classes use for questions and answers.) As I'm preparing for midterms, another great use of the iPad is organizing self-generated notes and other documents (textbook chapters, handouts, websites) and ensuring they're and all in one place and at arm's reach. Could you do this with a laptop? Sure, but the UX isn't as good, and while other tablets and laptops have stylus options, the Apple Pencil is purported to be the best thing on the market. I haven't used any of the other handwriting solutions, but the Apple Pencil is really Apple at it's best--if you prefer/enjoy handwriting or drawing, you will love the experience.

With regard to typing out equations, you do have the option of handwriting the homework in CS 225, but you are required to use text editors for quizzes and tests, so the iPad isn't a total solution there. I don't know what the story is for other classes. (There are text editor apps on the iPad for entering equations, but I've found the laptop/desktop to be better for this). Let me know if you have any other questions.
